In a way, these updates make me happy in that I've made sure not to invest too much time, and money, following a trainwreck of a story. (Usually my Spidey fix comes in issues of "Spider Man Family", which thankfully is FUN to read.)

Outside of said title, and these three items in particular:
-Anything to do with "Marvel Zombies"
-"Thunderbolts"
-Interesting "Essentials" collections

... I'm still staying tried and true to the DC universe.

PAPER DOLL
APPEARS IN: May’s Amazing Spider-Man #559
“Usually you’ll have supervillains who use their powers to make crimes or try to take over the world or take revenge,” says Slott. “Paper Doll is a supervillain who uses her power for a whole new obsession. Her particular brand of obsession will be very much fed by Peter Parker and a horrible choice he makes.

What, like making a DEAL WITH THE DEVIL?!

Over 3,000 people have said that they're not happy on Newsarama's poll. Many on other boards have made their feelings known. And on Comic Book Resources, Quesada said that this was the perfect way to end the marriage. To put a stake through the heart. He also pretty much says that he's doing this for the new generation of fans. Let me tell you, he's shot himself in the foot.

First, what new fans? The industry is limited enough as it is in locales. Second, once these new fans come in, they're going to find out through trades and Wikipedia, as well as message boards about the whole deal. Third, I could very well see a repeat of the Clone Saga again. I like the talent they've got, but they'll be overshadowed by a decision that is not universally popular.

Wasn't Ultimate Spider-Man for the "new generation" of fans?

The thing is, the "new fans" and basically everyone born in the last 20 years has grown up with and is used to Spider-Man being married to Mary Jane. Really, it's been like a Spider-Man fact for my whole life, it was even in the animated TV show!

The issue where Peter and Mary-Jane got married was released in 1987. Quesada has literally re-written 20 years of Spider-Man history.

Yeah, but we don't count because we're selfish.

Rumor has it that the Ultimate line might be ending.

It might be even further back. 25 or 27 years.

In today's CBR interview, Quesada reveals that one of the things he originally wanted to do was resurrect Gwen Stacy. Yeah, you heard right. But he got turned down. So it's not 1981, that he wants to relive. It's 1973.

What was most depressing is hearing two things, from when last I posted:

1. That the "Ultimate" Spidey line might be shut down. Like many others, I regarded that series as a PERFECTLY acceptable "restart" point for new readers. Plus, it had such an honestly entertaining run.

2. Joe being a "Gwen-aholic". I'm sorry, but in retrospect, Gwen and Peter had a terrible relationship, and I much preferred reading about Mary Jane and Peter's married lives. Go ahead, and read some of the old collections; Gwen was a bland damsel in distress, "Flighty Blond"-type. About the only things she did that were worthy of notice were to get killed, and to screw Peter up for a while. Hmm... Wait, maybe the latter reason is why Joe loves Gwen so much! laugh

I had just talked to a friend about that last night, regarding the Ultimate line. Looking at the November numbers, and comparing them to the Ultimate line's heyday, the line overall has fallen off drastically. While it still does well in the bookstore market supposedly (and frankly the direct market sales are still very respectable), it's clear that the Ultimate line has lost a lot of its luster. Whether that is less talented crews on the titles or a general loss of interest is up for debate, but one could see this move to make the 616 Spidey more accessible as a sign the Ultimate line is indeed ending. It doesn't really matter anymore anyway. Uncanny, adjectiveless and Astonishing all outsell Ultimate X-Men, Amazing outsells Ultimate Spider-Man, and once Millar and Hitch take over FF, that'll outsell Ultimate FF as well. There really is no need from Marvel's potential POV for the Ultimate line anymore.

As someone who, having only started reading Spidey within the last 3 or 4 years, can probably be counted among the newer generation of fans, I can pretty assuredly say "uh..thanks, you really shouldn't have...". I liked seeing peter get his marriage and life in order, make honorable nods to the past, and move forward as a character. I'll hate this end-marriage scenario if it goes on too long. The only way the story can in anyway be validated is if we get a "Forgotten Day" story arc within the next year with Peter and Mary Jane remembering what they've forgotten. If they don't do that, this will be as notorious as the clone saga, and if they take too long to get to the "remembering", it'll just feel like wasted filler.

See, that's the problem. Spider-Man was just as accessable married as he was single. Being single won't change things. He was very accessable when I was 10 and he was only married a year, in real time. And he was just as relatable, despite what Quesada and others think.

I don't think they're going to remember. Not until there is a change in editorial and a realization that being married isn't the death sentence for the character. See, Quesada is under the mistaken impression that fans wanted Peter and MJ to have kids, grow old together and shuffle off. That's not what we want. We're content with them being married and getting their lives in order. Not every couple in real life wants to have kids right away. Anyway, what little has been said about their relationship is that they were together, but didn't get married. Eventually they broke up. That's the gist in this new reality.

Just read OMD. I'm a diehard Spidey fan, but it looks like I'm taking a break from the books. The only interesting thing to come from OMD is the resurrection of Harry Osborn.

But with him resurrected how does that change all the past Green Goblin encounters and specifically how does that change things in regards to Norman Osborn?

They bascially rewound everything that had happened in Spider-Man for years. Makes me wonder why I even read the book if they are basically going to take a dump on everything that I liked. Screw Marvel, I'm done with reading their stuff for a while now. I really hope they realize how much they screwed up and fix things.

Gave BND a read today- book seems to have lost a degree of maturity or weight to it now than JMS's voice is gone. And is it me, or does Peter's facial expressions look like they're copied from an episode of Tom Goes to the Mayor?
