Now what?? I have no idea!! It is tough finding something to replace that hole....Sure, I love Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia, but for me they don't compare. I think the wonder of it, the waiting for the newest installment, the theories, everything....All of that added to the books for me, being a part of it as is happened I guess.
I am going to start reading the His Dark Materials series soon, a friend had been raving about them for years, and only recently did I realize that the movie that is coming out, the Golden Compass, is that series.
I also was looking forward to the Dark Tower series, but I can't get past book one.

Magnificent books! You're in for a real treat, there. Try to avoid as much of the controversy as you can, though. While it's nothing that will ruin the experience, all the discussion will give away things from the later books that it's probably nicer not to know.
I also was looking forward to the Dark Tower series, but I can't get past book one.
Book 1 is really different from the others. It's even skippable if you want; there's a little bit that's pretty important, but I think it's reasonably well explained in later books, it just may lose some of the emotional impact.
Personally, I loved the style of Book 1 and found the next two quite disappointing after it. (Book 4 is hot stuff, though. That's as far as I've gotten.) But if you didn't like the first one, future installments may be more to your taste.

Thanks for that, maybe I will skip book one, or simply peruse through it. I can always go back to it I guess. And as for the HDM....I think that I am getting it for Christmas from said friend, but if not I will be getting it myself right after the holidays and I am trying not to read reviews or spoilers so I go in with an open mind about it. Looking forward to it!
On that note, I have started rereading Deathly Hallows.....I have reread all of the books but the first three, HBP and OotP I have read four times each. I read through DH so fast because I was so ready for it and then I had to put it away and sort of calm myself. I think I am ready to go back to it now.
Know what else? I really wish that there was another great vampire series out there. I am a huge fan of the Vampire Chronicles of course, but have found nothing comparable. I really do like Michelle Bardsley, they are very funny books, but I guess I am looking for the darker stuff, like Anne Rice.

His Dark Materials were OK. The first and second were a lot stronger than the third book in my opinion.
Hmm. Maybe I'll suggest a new series every week or two or something.

Have you read it? The first book was hit the New York Times' bestsellers' list.

Well for me there will be Chronicles of Narnia. I loved the first film. Can't wait to see the second one when it comes out next year.

Actually I think the question has more to do with new big book series. The Chronicles of Narnia is a classic and not really in the running.

Hey, anything. Besides, LOTR had a big popularity spike when the movies came out; maybe the same will happen with Narnia.

For those kids who've spent the last ten years reading HP? I'd definitely go with the Wheel of Time series- has many of the same themes as HP, but executes them on a more epic scale in a more mature manner.

The Fullmetal Alchemist Manga by Hiromu Arakawa. It's about a boy alchemist prodigy and his brother....who is sort of a cyborg. Ok it's not a "book" in the traditional sense, but still good. Some of the "magic" elements persist, as do the big bad Voldemortesque figure. The author has a talent with dispersing it with humor, and the art style isn't very googly-eyed as a shoujo manga (the series has a large female fanbase).
The volumes are $10 each, though XP
That and the Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles series, about an archaelogist's son and a desert princess who go dimension hopping (licensed to Del Rey!). I can't think of any books that you haven't probably read already. His Dark Materials has already been mentioned before, and that I like.
Um....what about the Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix? It's not exactly Harry Potter but I found it to be a good read. It's about the Abhorsen, the one "good" necromancer who protects the boundary between the living and dead. The first book flips gender roles of the damsel-in-distress cliche.

I recently read the first book in the Abhorsen Trilogy, Sabriel, and really enjoyed it. Garth Nix created a very unique, engaging fantasy world, complete with magic and legions of the undead. Can't beat that!
Garth Nix's The Seventh Tower series, while geared toward younger readers, is also imaginative and addicting.

Possibly. I didn't like Sabriel (only got 80 pages and put it down) but my friends did.

I'll second others in saying "His Dark Materials".
Seriously, just ignore the movie and go for it!
