I'm extremely sorry for having backed out. I wasn't home over the weekend to finish my crappy story, didn't really like it anyway.
Good luck for those who sent in their stories!

And I've finally got the scores. Thanks to The_Face. Akexis_Wingstar, the_wandering_shadow, and Souderwan for judging.

The thing I liked best about this story was the emotion of it, the reality of it. It was very heartfelt. However when the end came I was disappointed somewhat. It seemed like the story had hardly begun and it was over. This could be the introduction of an interesting novel, I think.
The characterizations were excellent, even the minor characters had personality.

What a well thought out story! The world of mediaeval rivalry and intrigue sprang to life wonderfully. Admittedly I tripped over some of the names, but I’m like that sometimes too. I can only pronounce some of my names because I made them up… The scene after the wedding, wow! I should have seen it coming. I definitely don’t believe I could have won had I entered against this contest as I’d so wanted to. The ending was not a true ending. However I could see this ripening further, and I hope it does. Excellent job!
Very intriguing plot, and excellent characterization.

This was an interesting little story and it had the best clear cut ending of the lot. There were at least a handful of mistakes, some just typos, and others could have been typos too or mistaken grammar, and that took away from the piece a bit. But I guess that is understandable if you conjured this up really fast. I didn’t really see much of a fantasy or sci-fi overtone, or even an undertone for that matter, either.
Good characterization, fun dialogue. I suggest getting a spell checker. Also, at least for these boards, putting a space between paragraphs is a good idea because it's hard to read otherwise.
First Place: Jedi_Nemesis
Second Place: Ultima_1
Third Place: SoA

Man, both my beta and I combed that thing for typos, and I do indeed have a spellchecker that seems to be operational. I guess some slipped through. It was good fun to write anyhow! Alas for under-appreaciated realistic fantasy.
Congrats to you two as well. I'll definitely try one of these again when it comes around.
