Because all storytelling (whether the storyteller realizes it or not) relies on a three act structure (setup, complication, climax). Its easier to tell a deeper more involved story over three films...or in some instances its just two more opportunities to make more money (Like Pirates and Spider-man).
Though I still to this day argue that a trilogy is a story that is planned from the onset as three parts (SW, LOTR, Matrix), not a franchise that was successful enough to have two sequels (Spider-man, Terminator, BTTF, POTC) or that a prequel is a story set before the first one but written after (meaning The Hobbit is not a prequel, but the Silmarilion would be IMO).

I agree completely its a good way to tell a deeper story, and sometimes its about money. BUT, I don't care what anyone says, there is no way the Matrix was planned as a trilogy. The Flipchinski brothers can say whatever they want. When writing a story in one sitting, the ability to be relevant doesn't stop after act 1. Just like Pirates, it was wrapped up in a nice bow after one flick, there was no more story that needed to be told.
Edit: sorry to be off topic....long live Firefly/Serenity =)

QFT. The Matrix was a stand alone movie. The story was complete at the end of #1 in a way that LOTR or even Star Wars wasn't. The sequels were just a crappy attempt to get money out of a successful movie.
As for a sequel to Serenity, I would love to see it, but I am not sure what exactly it would be about. Serenity finished off a lot of the hanging threads from Firefly in one way or another. The only things I can think of remaining are Inara and Blue Sun...

Despite the death of Book, there are a slew of questions waiting to be answered about him. Perhaps something from his past falls on the doorstep of Mal and Co. and they have to start exploring their dead friend's past to try to find answers.

Fair enough. Although it would be more difficult to do than if he was alive. I also felt Serenity implied that he used to be something similar to the Oppertive. I guess they could build off of that...

We may both be off, because I was as convinced as I could be without actual proof, that Book was an operative. And it made Book that much cooler to me, because not only wouldn't he talk about it, but Chiwetel Ejiofor(way off I am sure)was exceptionally bad azz. I could just imagine Book doing some wild stuff like that.

Not only that Jubal Early (sp?) also stated when someone refered to book as a "shephard" stated: "He's no Shephard."

My personal theory is that Book was an Alliance higher-up of some sort, and was responsible for or involved in some wartime atrocity, which caused him to rethink his life and set out on a new spiritual path in an effort to atone for what he did.
Particular pet theory is that he was somehow involved in the strike on Serenity Valley, and that's something Mal will have to come to terms with.

Joss made a couple of appearances in the Star Wars special that was on the History Channel tonight. It was nice to see him.
Speaking of Joss, he's got a link to a Serenity lunch box on his blog. Pretty cool looking. I'll pass on it, though, since I'd have no real use for it and my Star Wars collection already takes up a significant portion of the house.

Gah, halfway into June and no posts here yet??
Thought my fellow Browncoats might be interested to know that Gentle Giant Ltd. (maker of the Star Wars mini-busts, maquettes and statues) are going to make Serenity mini-busts as well. Malcolm Reynolds will be the first character in the line, with an edition size of 1000. More details at the newly launched SerenityCollectors.com.

Well, I'm off to the Des Moines screening of Serenity! Should be a good time. I'm going to dress up in my Kaylee-from-the-pilot costume that I made last year for Halloween. I heard there's going to be a costume contest, so maybe I'll win!

Just thought I'd up this and mention that on August 21st (IIRC) the Serenity Collector's edition is going to be released. Normally I'm not a fan of purchasing a regular edition and then a collectors edition later down the line, but this is supposed to contain a lot of extra content, along with some very sexy artwork. Also Joss said at Comic-Con that any chance of a Serenity II pratically lies with the success of the CE-DVD. So if you're a Serenity/FireFly fan, this could be one of our last chances at getting Firefly revived yet again.

Then I'll have to get that DVD.
BTW, a friend told me that Firefly is on Sci Fi today. Right now, possibly...

Aye, they showed about half of Firefly this morning from 8-4 EST. I don't know what episodes they aired though prior to 12 as I woke up at around 12 and was pleasently surprised to turn Sci-Fi on and watching the beginning of Trash. But what they showed from 12-4 was Trash, The Message, Heart of Gold and Objects in Space. I can only presume following that order that the 8-12 content contained: Jaynestown, Out of Gas, Arial and War Stories.
