JMS Interview talks about Silver Surfer, World War Z, Lensmen, One More Day & Ninja Assassin.
About a month and a half ago I got a call from the Wachowski Brothers. I met with them and they had a draft for this movie called Ninja Assassin, which wasn't at all where they wanted it to be. And they said, "We need a whole new script, and we go to camera in six weeks." So I went home and put on a pot of coffee, and I wrote essentially a whole new script in 53 hours. When a friend calls you and says they're in trouble, you do what you have to.
The man is a machine.
On another note- the B5 Scripts Volume 15 offer expires in 11 days (I just scrambled to grab 13 & 14 to make it- had forgotten to check-in on that, what with JMS's absence online the past few months not reminding me of the new releases).
Also seems they started an "Other Voices" B5 Scripts volume collecting scripts from other writers too. Very cool. My wallet's not out of the years-long fire yet.

Yep- all the more impressive considering JMS had to rewrite that story to accomodate the Sinclair/Sheridan change, and managed to do so in a way that you could never tell otherwise. Beyond a slight flaw regarding Zathras's capture (a concession only made for run time), it integrates flawlessly with B-Squared.

Well, finally got finished reading Vol 15 of the B5 Script Books (well, not everything, there's so much material to cover, but the prefaces and notations of note as well as some of the more tantalizing core content).
It's been quite a journey through this publication program to finally have it completed. It also has revealed some interesting cosmic coincidences- my birthday is March 26th. As we learned back in Vol 1, the first completed draft of The Gathering was dated March 26th. The final note from JMS in Vol 15 is dated March 24th. The close-to-exact proximity strikes me as probably meaning something, but I'm not a Vorlon.
The highlight of the volume, of course, is the outline of the show if Sinclair had stayed.
(some by-comparison spoiler warnings for people like Sniper who are still going through the series!)
It's quite similar overall, except towards the end where a lot of events as we know them don't happen until much later. The Centauri don't overthrow the Narn until the 4th or 5th season (Londo still becomes puppet-Emperor, though slaved to the Shadows instead of the Drahk). G'Kar becomes a freedom fighter on Narn for a period of time. Garibaldi becomes a mercenary. Sinclair and Delenn fall in love.
There is no Earth civil war, B5 doesn't break away, the Vorlons, Shadows and First Ones are not defeated/exiled. The warrior caste overthrows the Grey Council and exiles them. They reignite hostilities with Earth. Londo provides info to the Shadows that unknowingly leads to them destroying a massive Vorlon ship carrying hundreds of thousands of Vorlons, which is blamed on Sinclair.
The series ends with the Minbari destroying B5, Sinclair, Delenn and their infant child escaping and on the run from the Vorlons for the attack accusation, from the Earth Alliance for being thought a traitor, from the warrior Minbari for his role in a potential prophecy and from the Centauri since Londo fears he can expose the true Vorlon killers.
...then we'd get the spin-off series called Babylon Prime.
Babylon Prime would deal with the exiled Grey Council uniting with Sinclair, Delenn and Narns to try and unite the galaxy again. They would be the ones to pull B4 through time to use as a mobile base of operations and a beacon of hope to rally with. So we get the core of War Without End here, essentially. The time distortions age both Sinclair and Delenn.
Always on the run from hunters & military assault teamsm eventually they come across Londo, who helps them escape at great cost to himself (so, again, essentially the flashforwards of WWE).
The time distortion has the sideeffect of rapidly aging Sinclair and Delenn's son into a full grown man in a matter of days- though they can give him the education of an adult, he lacks the emotional development and thus still posses the naivite of a child but eventually learns to be more. He becomes a religious icon by those thinking he has fulfilled prophecy.
It ends with new alliances formed, the Shadows defeated, Earth beating the Minbari and clearing Sinclair's name. Delenn leaves Sinclair to rejoin the Grey Council. Their son becomes the head of the alliance. Sinclair retires to a quiet, uninhabited world by himself, fishing.
It's interesting- you can see how the two shows were mostly condensed into one, though obviously you have much different elements at play here at times that were eliminated or permanently altered. It also explains why B5 as it is has that 16-year gap between Season 5 and WWE Londo that I think many people believed the show would one day get to somehow. But without the 2nd show to accomodate a jump in time, or even the child at the time of the time distortion trip to age-accelerate, the regular lifespan was required.

The last mention was that there were talks prior to the WGA strike last fall, and that JMS had suggested they move plans along if they wanted to beat the strike. The suits didn't want to be pressured, not believing there would be a strike.
JMS has also been very busy with the onslaught of big movie offers ever since he sold The Changeling to Ron Howard. Hopefully we'll hear something next year, maybe.

So I'm done with season three.
- The pseduo-trilogy showing B5 secession and "War Without End" are the seasons highlights.
Marcus is a great addition to the cast.
Vir is still a great foil to Londo. Also saw he went to the same health salon Leland Adama went to lose a massive amount of weight in such a short time.
Refa's death was hilarious.
Tron just has this thing about him when he's angry.
All in all B5 so far has been a show that keeps getting better each season. I hope season four keeps the pace up.

"(insert start of any sentence) straight to hell."
Season 4 delivers quite well. They definitely hit their stride by then, and it's pretty much all big arc stuff, so it's pretty packed, but in a good way (though Season 5 suffers due the necessity of doing so).

Speaking of Tron I just heard him bellow "Get the hell out of our galaxy!" Interesting twist on how the Shadows and Vorlons are showned to be different sides of the same coin instead of "We're angels, you're the spawn of Satan." Gotta give props for the guy who played Cartagia. Great work for only five episodes.

Yeah, Cartagia worked out very well- the whole Centauri plot in general, really.

This was posted by JMS to the moderated newsgroup today:
One final note re: recent discussions on TMoS and more Lost Tales.
B5:TLT was commissioned at a $2 million budget to, yet one more time,
"test the waters" for B5. We did what we could with that, and that
was that. As we did with Rangers, which also suffered from not having
a lot of money because of concerns about "is there really a B5
audience?" Which is, of course, a foolish question from a studio that
has never really understood what it has in B5.
Of late, there have been more discussions from WB about doing more
DVDs, again at a low cost, or a cable thing, again with minimal
investment.
So for the last few months, I've been giving this whole subject a lot
of quiet thought. And I've come to a conclusion.
B5 as a five year story stands beautifully on its own. If anything
else is to be continued from that story, it should be something that
adds to the legacy of B5, rather than subtracts from it.
As well intentioned as Rangers and TLT were, as enticing as it was to
return to those familiar waters, in the end I think they did more to
subtract from the legacy than add to it. I don't regret having made
them, because I needed to go through that to get to the point where I
am now psychologically, but from where I sit now, I wouldn't make them
again.
So I've let everyone up here know that I'm not interested in doing any
more low-budget DVDs. I'm not interested in doing any low-budget
cable things or small computer games. The only thing I would be
interested in doing regarding Babylon 5 from this point on is a full-
featured, big-budget feature film.
It's that or nothing.
And if it's nothing, I'm totally cool with that because the original
story stands on its own just fine. I'm not lobbying for it, I'm not
asking fans to write in about it (nor should you) because such
campaigns never really have much impact...that's simply the position
I've taken up here. Lord knows I don't lack for other things to do
these days. I'm busier on more prestige projects with terrific people
and great film-makers than at any other time in my career.
At the end of the day, for me, it's not just a matter of getting more
B5. It's a matter of getting more *good* B5 that respects what came
before it and doesn't have to compromise visually or in terms of
action. The original show deserves better than that, the surviving
cast members deserve better than that, and the fans who have supported
it over the years definitely deserve better than that. A lot better.
So I've drawn that line in the sand, and I'm happy living on whichever
side of that line the universe puts me. Just thought you should know,
'cause it's your show too.

With JMS's rising star power, i wouldn't be suprised if we do get a movie at some point.
I really liked lost tales, and i don't think it subtracted from b5's legacy. I do understand what JMS is saying about wanting to do B5 right or not at all. I'm ok with that.

I hope this blooms into a real film- though I REALLY wanted to see what that damn Garibaldi story was gonna be, and find out why the Vorlons and Vorlon homeworld were featured so heavily in TLT.

Yeah, the major issue I have with the last three B5 projects is that we are left with so much dangling and no real sign of resolution. I have said it before, and this just adds more to my feeling that JMS needs to commission either Peter David or Jeanne Cavelos to finish out the stories of Crusade and TLTs. Peter David did the best job getting the feel of Babylon 5, but Jeanne Cavelos comes in a close second.

^^Well, that would depend on finding a publisher who is prepared to pay the licence fee to WB and publish said novels. So far, DelRey has made an attempt reprinting three of the canon novels, without much success. I don't see any new novels coming under these conditions, unless he decides to self-publish them.
