Ponyo Release Date

Jan 27th 2008

Recently we passed on the news that Japanese master Hayao Miyazaki had completed the storyboards for his upcoming animated film Ponyo on a Cliff, and now it appears that a release date has been set.

Nausicaa.Net says we can expect the film to be released in the middle of July, very likely on Saturday, July 19. Their source is Variety Japan. According to a publicist for Studio Ghibli, Miyazaki's animation studio, more information on the film will be made available after the Tokyo International Anime Fair, which will be held March 27-30.

When can we expect to see the film in the US? I haven't seen a hint so far, but Miyazaki's previous production, Howl's Moving Castle, was released in Japan in November 2004 and in the US in June 2005, while the one before that, Spirited Away, took more than a year to reach US theaters. I'd love to see this one by the end of the year.

In that case I must take issue with Koohii's dislike of it! I laughed myself silly watching Tanuki Wars, but the more realistically-animated moments also brought a tear to my eye. The film strikes me as an homage to a rapidly disappearing species of animal that once roamed all over Japan, an honored symbol of fertility and abundance (hence the giant testicles, which are also featured on the ubiquitous tanuki statues one sees everywhere on the island), but which is now vanishing as a result of urban expansion. So the filmmakers decided to have fun with the characters and give them cartoony spirits, and Disney-like anthropomorphism, but the realistic moments remind us that the real creatures are still out there, suffering a perhaps unrecoverable loss. I think this is brilliant.

There are some concepts and customs that cross cultures well, and there are some that don't. While I applaud the message and ideas behind the movie, my prudishness interferred with my ability to enjoy all of it. Perhaps the fault is mine.

in truth..ive only watched spirited away.

its quite good actually, very imaginitive - the characters are strong, and i like the whole idea of the boiler-man etc.
i started with that one, too. i think it's the one that least tries to get a mparticular message home and also has the most adult content. in short, it's a very good animated film and completely deserving of all the accolade.

kl...have you seen any of his otehr works? If so please tell me the titles of them peace

25th of May, New Unseen Ponyo Art By Hayao Miyazaki

Only less than two months of waiting are left for those interested in the works of Studio Ghibli. On July 19 master animation director Miyazaki Hayao will be back with his latest full length feature animation called Gake no ue no Ponyo (ŠR‚̏ã‚̃|ƒjƒ‡, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea). For all of those having a hard time coping with impatience, GhibliWorld.com has a temporary fix.

Shining on the June edition of Yomy, an extra release for those subscribed to Japanfs largest newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun, is a never before seen water color art piece made by Miyazaki Hayao himself. This time it is yet another Ponyo underwater scene and logically GhibliWorld.com has an image of it.
