variety confirming sequel 100%

Paramount and DreamWorks are holding the date of June 26, 2009, for "Transformers 2," with Michael Bay expected to return to direct the sequel.
Despite the tensions between them, DreamWorks and Par have plenty of incentive to move forward with the next installment in the budding franchise. "Transformers," starring Shia LaBeouf and based on the toy robot line, has grossed nearly $700 million worldwide, giving DreamWorks its first live-action franchise.

Still, the high-profile project isn't guaranteed total immunity from the ongoing battle of wills between DreamWorks' David Geffen and Steven Spielberg and leadership at Paramount conglom Viacom.

The studios stressed that they are targeting the June 26 date, but that it isn't ironclad.

I absolutely loved the first Transformers. I had my reservations going in. But I tried to be open-minded. I loved the little comedic scenes like the Transformers hidiing out in the backyard. The only thing was I thought it was tough to differentiate them in battle. The other thing was I felt that Megatron and Starscream's designs were uninspiring.

Writing team built fast for 'Transformers 2'
By Borys Kit

Oct 4, 2007

"Transformers"
Scribe Ehren Kruger and the writing team of Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are in negotiations to team to write the screenplay for DreamWorks/Paramount's "Transformers 2."

Director Michael Bay, star Shia LaBeouf and producers Tom DeSanto, Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Don Murphy are back in their respective chairs, as is exec producer Steven Spielberg.

The teaming of A-listers to write such a huge project might be an industry first and could have been necessary because Kurtzman and Orci -- who wrote the $315 million-grossing first "Transformers" movie -- also are busy writing J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" movie for Paramount and producing "Eagle Eye" for DreamWorks.

But the teaming will not be a case of complete strangers being thrust together, as the three writers are working together on "Nightlife," a DreamWorks serial-killer project that sees Kruger adapting a Thomas Perry novel, with Kurtzman and Orci producing along with Neal Moritz. Kruger also adapted the Stephen King tome "The Talisman," which Spielberg is exec producing for TNT.

Sources are pegging the writing deal, which is not yet closed, in the $5 million-$7 million range, which also might be an industry high for a nonoriginal screenplay. Reflected in the price is the pressure to perform: With the studio hoping to make the movie before a potential talent strike, the writers are going to have to type fast.

Kruger met with Bay and Hasbro president Brian Goldner and impressed the duo with his knowledge of the "Transformers" mythology.

Kruger also has "Torso," a graphic novel adaptation that has David Fincher directing, set up at Paramount. He is repped by Paradigm and Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern.

Orci and Kurtzman are repped at CAA.

"Hardly- TF is obviously only an introduction film. The best stories and elements to adapt from the TF mythos can't be told until the setup is out of the way."

Yes, yes, I'm well aware of how the machine works, I'm merely stating that it's broken. Sequels are often just the same movie done over again with much bigger budgets, which translates to more SFX, bigger explosions, and a story that takes the back seat. Now certain films have defied this: ESB, Last Crusade (although I'd argue that Temple of Doom was just that), Spidey 2, blah blah blah. But the typical Hollywood model usually more closely resembles The Mummy and it's sequels, or the "Pirates" trilogy, where each subsequent flick gets worse and worse, all the while growing in budget. And I'm sorry to say, Bay fits right into the "Hollywood model" of film making, he's a product of Bruckheimer, 'nuf said.

That being said, I hope they don't screw up the next Transformers flick. I was pretty impressed with how decent the first one was and it would be a shame to ruin it with a series of BIG dumb sequels where nothing really happens, the budget just got bigger.

I realize it's a glum outlook to have, but it happens all too often, and with the current state of the business, there doesn't seem to be an end in sight.

I'm optimistic regarding the story for TF2 (after seeing how well they pulled it of in TF 1), hopefully they won't fall into the trap that so many sequels do.

I never thought I'd hear myself say this or write it for that matter but I actually hope Michael Bay returns for TF2. I want the entire epic to maintain visual and storytelling continuity. Too often sequels feel so divorced from their predecessors because a new "vision" is incorporated into the film (see Ratner and XMen as a prime example). Give me the classic "Bay" shots in all the TF films.

I agree. Changing directors for a sequel almost always gives the movie a much different feel and style. Both of which affect the final product.

Indeed. It mucks up story and superficial continuity. Keep the "team" together and you get more consistent and tighter stories. That's why I really hope that Singer's group from Superman Returns stays together for the next few films.

You made a good point in regards to X-Men and Singer. When he chose not to return for 3 (since he was off making Superman), I would have preferred that they postponed the film and waited for him. The Last Stand wasn't bad, in fact I really enjoyed it. But it didn't feel like the other films and that was disappointing.

Right. The Last Stand entertained but it lacked some of the "emotional" (for lack of a better word) resonance that the previous two films had. Occasionally a change in director is just what the doctor ordered (see Lucas/Kershner). Most of the time though it can cause a serious disconnect in story telling methodology (Burton/Schumacher) to the overall story's detriment.

Star Trek can also be a prime example. Sometimes it can be good (From Meyer to Nimoy for II and III back to Meyer for The Voyage Home) and bad (Shatner for V).

Whole 'nother subject: I was cruising through IMDB.com and I saw this tidbit. Shia only had two days rest between Disturbia and Transformers? Good grief, he's a better actor than I thought switching gears on only two days between films.

EDIT: I really dislike OPPM.
