That was KJ's original intent, but the idea was scrapped by the rulers of NBC. Don't get me wrong, I like V: The Final Battle the same way I like Lester's theatrical version of Superman II. It was still a good story, but it will be neat to see KJ's original vision just as we recently got to see Donner's original intentions for Superman II. It will probably make a lot more sense and fit a lot tighter with the direction the original series.
Speaking of the Donner Cut, I bought it along with the Ultimate Collectors Set...I liked the Donner Cut but not as much as the released Superman 2. It (D2) was a lot tighter, which made for a less humour version & I just could'nt get that Supe's got back his powers by getting a seizure, touching Jorel's hologram. Clark talking with his mother about Lois made more story sense. By the way, will they release "V" again for dvd? (In time 4 the 2nd series)

I still am a HUGE V fan.
I just want to correct some things. I've been following the story for awhile now.
Shooting has not started yet.
KJ has stated that Singer, Englund, Badler, and Grant are all "on-board".
Donovan has "appeared" to have died in between the original and this one...but it has been treated very wink-wink nudge nudge basically saying he's not dead and will return somewhere in the story. I don't think that's very spoilerish considering KJ has said Singer is onboard.
As of now it looks like a 3 hour tele-movie is what they are shooting for. It will not be NBC.
There are about 24 principal characters.
The new aliens will indeed be heavily involved.
As for Ham Tyler...I doubt it, but it's not out of the realm of possibility. While they are ignoring the Final Battle and the Series, Kenneth Johnson was heavily involved with the original ideas behind FB...including creating Ham Tyler.
Of course in an old Starlog issue, KJ talked about it. He said that Ham was going to be in a wheelchair. And they had this great scene written where Ham and DOnovan argue and Donovan is about to haul off and whack Tyler, which Kenny thought was great because you never see the hero hit a guy in a wheelchair, but Tyler does a little wheelie and knocks Donovan on his butt, saying "See that's your problem Gooder, you're not a killer"
In addition he mentioned that the StarChild was never a part of his script and the ending had Martin flying the mothership into deep space before it blew up while Donovan and Julie escaped.
SO, Ham may be involved...and don't be surprised if he's in a wheelchair
Warner Home Video is securing funds for this project at a $19mil budget. One thing not mentioned but a definite possibility is the idea of releasing it straight to DVD.
But we'll see. I'm excited and can't wait to read the book.

It would be interesting if the story was turned around to Donovan being brainwashed/nearly brainwashed instead of Julie. The Heroine saving the anti - hero instead of the hero saving the Damsel. Nice twist.
Edit: And I don't want Ham in a wheelchair!

Given the character has been introduced as Michael Ironside, may tie his hands. It's possible they won't use him at all...but it's possible they use him as he is (no wheelchair). We'll find out soon enough

I liked the StrikeForce Morituri comic, which had a lot of common elements with V.
Worth a read if you can find a copy

Great and very interesting if it turns out to be true. I've been looking forward to this book a long time now and I really hope it delivers.

More intersting news.
Dark Horizons posted: A Second Generation of V Soon?
Monday, February 11th 2008
Talk of a sequel or remake of the 80's alien invasion mini-series classic "V" has long been in the works, now it seems something might be moving again.
In 2004, original series creator Kenneth Johnson proposed to the networks a sequel. He was later asked to write a script for a remake instead and if successful, the remake could lead to a sequel.
Two years later Johnson announced his completion of a four hour script entitled "V: The Second Generation" set 20 years after the original mini-series. Networks however showed little interest at the time.
Then, last week Johnson released the manuscript in novel form in booksellers and this week revealed on his official site that there will be a major announcement soon to be announced "after the writers strike".
This was followed by a short message to a DH reader saying "I really hope you enjoy the novel. Stay tuned for the film version. All the best".
Ignoring events of the mini-series and the second mini-series "The Final Battle", 'Second Generation' has Earth still under Visitor domination and the Resistance fighting a losing battle as the majority believe that the Visitors have only helped them.
It's then that the message Julie sent into space at the end of the original miniseries is finally heard and an army of aliens, the long-sought enemies of the Visitors, reinforces the Resistance in their time of need. However, all is not as it seems.

I've just finished reading the book.
The info on his website, by the way, has been around for awhile. Johnson has been attempting to get a second miniseries made forever, but has run into problems with funding.
The story is interesting, and almost identical in tone to the original V. Fans of the Final Battle will be disappointed, however, as it ignores the events of that story, as well as the characters (aka no Ham Tyler). Also, there are some who think that The Final Battle was a better story.
I liked the new book, and it would translate well into a miniseries (which is what Johnson is looking for), but it throws out some of it's own canon from the original, which may aggravate die-hard fans.
Oh by the way, no Red Dust, either .
Peace,
V-03

Honestly, I don't think The Second Generation would make a better TV miniseries than The Final Battle (and while I enjoy The Final Battle, I'm not an unabashed fan).
I don't have any problems with Kenneth Johnson ignoring everything that happened in The Final Battle and the Weekly Series. And he does make some pretty decent additions in terms of "factions." The problem is that The Second Generation doesn't do enough to separate itself from The Final Battle. It's still a heavily plot/twist - based story, as opposed to the character-driven story of The Original Miniseries.

I thought the Second Generation was decent enough. There was certainly a sense of Kenneth wanting to update, yet feeling the need for similar character archetypes. So many of the characters from the Original Miniseries that DON'T appear in TSG, are there in the form of a new character.
Johnson is actually going to be making a feature film out of the Original Miniseries first, and then look to make TSG into a sequel feature film. The details are sketchy but as of April, he was getting very close to an announcement...*Shrugs*
If anyone is interested I've created a fairly major V section on my sitewhich gives news on V as well as reviews on all the mini-series, weekly series, comics, books, and even some looks at some unfilmed scripts such as the JMS proposal The Rebirth which would have followed the weekly series in the late 80s.
