Yup, it's happening.

They are actually remaking a film that is considered to be a major piece of film history from the silent era.
It's official, Hollywood is twenty different kinds of stupid.
The person who directs this will either do something that is a bloated mess of CGI, or try to recreate it exactly and it will be the Psycho remake all over again.
Do they just sit in an office and throw darts and whichever classic film poster it lands on they remake?

I don't necessarily see this as a bad thing. The original was far from perfect, even by the standards of the day. Just because it has been labeled a 'classic' shouldn't preclude it from being updated, remastered, or improved, particularly when the opportunity comes around to significantly improve on the original.
But, waitasecond...wasn't it remade a few years ago? I distinctly remember being handed a remake of Metropolis at the video shop about five years ago while I was looking for the original.
EDIT: Just wanted to be clear; I see nothing wrong with them IMPROVING on the original and making a better movie. If they can do this, then more power to them. I don't expect this to actually happen, as Hollywood has trouble making even relatively simple stories into palatable films.

I think the success or failure of this project will depend on who they get to direct it. If they're smart they'll try and go for someone along the lines of Peter Jackson or Ridley Scott. Jim Cameron would also be a good choice.

This is true, and although when I heard this news I was immediately negative.
But if the chosen director is someone like Peter Jackson, I will be fully supporting. As for Ridly Scott, I think I heard it said that he's stayed away from scifi because he hasn't seen a script he liked in a long time. If they get a good enough writer for this project he may well be a possibility.

Yeah, that's the other thing.Writers tend not to be as well known in Hollywood, but the person the studio picks to write the scrpit will also be a critical part of the success or failure of this film. The only person I can think of who would be good, off the top of my head, is Arthur C Clarke. Ray Bradbury might also be a good choice, but Clarke would be better, as he has experience writing for cinema.

Though not a direct remake, Dark City was heavily influenced by Metropolis, with many of it's themes being the reverse of Metropolis's. After all the empahasis on that in the DC extras features and commentaries, I'm actualyl surprised this hasn't happened sooner, other than DC being more of a critical cult success on DVD than theatrical.

I agree. But I recently discovered that It's not actually based on Fritz Lang's classic.
Tezuka Osama @World posted: Despite superficial similarities, this work was not at all influenced by the pre-World War II German movie entitled "Metropolis" (1926), in which a humanoid appears. In fact, Tezuka Osamu had not seen the movie at the time when he was working on this story.
However, he created Mitchy based on the only still picture of the movie that he had seen, which depicted the birth of a female robot.
I don't know what to think about the upcoming remake. I find the original great but not that great. A reamke of, for example Casablanca can't be done since no one can replace Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart IMO. But since the original Metropolis is a silent film there's room for some improvisation with the actors in the remake. But nervertheless, it really comes down to the visual syle, a good script, a good director and if they're going to do a meticulous remake of the original or a new interpretation. I'm impartial in the matter until I know more about this project.
