I agree, that's certainly a concern as well. In those cases they would probably need to utilize a stunt double which would make production more difficult.

I don't know, I think I'd rather see a new actor frankly.
They should save the CGI tricks for Smaug if you ask me

Even though I think that Holm is great, a younger actor(like McAvoy) would be better suited to play Bilbo, imo.

Same here. They'd be better off with a younger actor.

Won't a lot of the walking shots be done in the same way that they were in LotR , where little were used in order to convey the smaller height of the hobbits compared to regular people?

^ ^ Probably. If they use the same techniques, some of it will be little people next to standard-sized people, some of it will be standard-sized people in forced perspective and/or next to people in "big" suits, and some of it will be digital.
As to the line in FOTR about Bilbo not having aged a day, Gandalf means since they last saw each other, not since the end of The Hobbit all those years ago. They've seen each other in the interim.

If they do recast Bilbo...who bets they re-edit the opening sequence of Fellowship to include the new bilbo finding the ring, rather then the red-wigged holm?
and the LOTR special editions are born!

And Aragorn meets with a CGI Sauron outside the Prancing Pony before taking the Hobbits with him on the journey.

TORN posted: Del Toro Posts Heads Up to Ringers in our Forum
June 3rd, 2008
Director Guillermo del Toro recently posted a ‘heads up’ to Tolkien fans in TheOneRing.net’s forum. In the post, Del Toro outlines why his upcoming film ‘Hellboy II’ and last year’s ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ should not necessarily serve as examples of the tone and theme of the upcoming ‘Hobbit’ films.
GDT posted: “It is my dearest hope that this message will prevent speculation of what in “Pan’s Labyrinth” or “Hellboy II” will indicate what the HOBBIT will be. In time there will be definite aesthetic choices that will guide the film towards a yuxtaposition of PJ’s and my visual proclivities but I think it will only be visible in retrospect and it would be almost impossible -and rather perverse- to try and divine it at this stage.“
The post is a lot more extensive than that simple quote, so jump on over to our forum to read the complete entry! And isn’t it great to have Guillermo participating so early in our community? [Forum]
ComingSoon posted: Christopher Lee Would Return as Saruman
Source: Empire Online on June 4, 2008
86-year-old Christopher Lee has expressed his interest in returning as Saruman in Guillermo del Toro's The Hobbit and/or the untitled sequel.
While the evil wizard is not featured in the "Lord of the Rings" prequel, the two films give plenty of room for Saruman to return in some aspect. Lee tells Empire Online:
Lee posted: I'd be interested in seeing how that transition from good to evil occurred and, yes, of course I would return to the role if I was asked.
For much more on the wizards' backstory, read the full interview here.
TORN posted: A Casting Christmas Gift from Guillermo?
June 4th, 2008
IGN caught up with director Guillermo Del Toro this morning and tried to get a scoop on when we can expect a casting announcement for ‘The Hobbit:’
When asked if fan favourite James McAvoy had bagged the the Bilbo Baggins role, he replied: “Not yet. Not yet James McAvoy, not yet Jack Black, or Daniel Radcliffe. There’s nothing to fear or celebrate yet.
GDT posted: “In six months time we should know,” he continued. “We will try to give that casting news at Christmas as a gift.”

TORN posted: GDT Talks Spoilers and Hobbit
June 5th
EW.com has posted an article addressing the prevalence of spoilers on the internet, and Guillermo del Toro chimes with a comment about the upcoming ‘Hobbit:’
Pan’s Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro plans on being pretty transparent as he embarks on The Hobbit.
GDT posted: “It’s easier to protect the 20 percent of a project that’s really sensitive if you’re open about the other 80 percent,” he says. “I think that’s the way to go, especially with a project like The Hobbit, which is a holy book for so many people. People should know the path you’re walking.”
A quick note about TheOneRing.net and spoilers (if you are new hear) - we do post them but give you ample warning to choose not to read them. Please read the full article at EW.com. Thanks to Silverlode for the heads up on this story. [Read More]

Well it's nice of Del Toro to say something like that.
I don't buy it for a second...
but it's nice to know he's "savvy" enough to attempt to diffuse the issue.
Though really, if he thinks the speculation on "style" hasn't already led to ulcers, he's deluded.
_______________
I'm still praying they dump this "sequel"...but if they don't...that's where Lee goes...if he lives that long.
seriously, with this tentative schedule...he may not make it to shooting dates.
_______________
I really truly hope that he named those "names" for Bilbo as a way to dismiss them...the name should be Martin Freeman...McAvoy is WELL on his way to being a huge hollywood star...doing Hobbit would probably be a hinderance to him, and his celebrity would overshadow the role.
________________
So in essence, we'll get the same treatment that PJ gave us of LOTR...plenty of "updates" from the set...a well coordinated trickle of information.

That Del Toro is going to be "checked" by the visual or production style of the LOTR in his process.
Now I do believe he will be "inspired" by them...and thus we will get some nods to how PJ carried on his films...but I do not believe him when he says juxtaposing his and PJ visions will be so smooth, that it'll take "retropect" to notice them.
He wasn't brought in on this project to be a PJ clone...they could've gotten that from elsewhere, and for far less.
Moreover, I would be shocked if he caved in his principles to suit "Peter's vision", and moreover, I'd be even more shocked if PJ asked him to.
I think if anyone wants to see "the same movie" on screen more then the fans, it's New Line...and we all know the love affair PJ has with them.
Finally, how can he possibly know what elements he can change and which ones should stay true to the LOTR depiction? These are not simple movies...the complexity and the divergent parts have fans all over the spectrum...
change the costumes...change the camera work...change the timing of scenes...change the amount of hair on a hobbit's feet...who knows...you change one, and it's a drastic alteration for somebody on this planet.
Now, I've said it before...I'm not dooming this film because it's not "peter Jackson directs the Hobbit"...Del Toro could do a fabulous job...I like his work...but for him to essentially say "I'll be compromising my dreams and vision for this project to keep people from jumping off buildings" is just talk...it's the right thing to say at this stage.
He comes back in 2011 and says before it hits theaters that he's worked painstakingly to keep in step with PJ, then I'll be more affected by this statement...shocked beyond belief more likely.
The mantra should be "give him a chance" not "nothing will change"...but then, people have no tolerance...especially rabid fanboys.
Oh how I wish GL had handed over the chair on AOTC and ROTS...but then, those poor suckers would probably be living in agony today.
