Hi, I'm currently working on a space battle in 3ds Max, and I am also using After Effects for effects editing (lasers, explosions, etc.)
Here are links to two shots I have made so far,
Clip 1
Clip 2
Any comments would be much appreciated.
Also, I was wondering if anyone has a technique or tutorial on how to make Proton Torpedoes with the Blue trail. So far I haven't come up with anything that looks half decent for the torpedoes.
Thanks

It all looks pretty nice.
On the first clip, the mian thing is that they're travelling way too slow. The second one looks pretty awesome, but again, too slow. The lasers look fantastic though.
Thanks for sharing.

Yeah in the first clip the rebel ships are moving to slow. The tie fighters are great though.
the 2nd clip i really like. Again alittle slow, but the look of it is sweet, and the green lazer is great. So main thing....speed.

Hi,
I have a few questions.
How did you get the stars in like that? Whenever i put my star as an environment map its attached to the camera, in other words how do i make it static??
Secondly how did you do those explosions in after effects? Did you have a clip of an explosion? I cant find any and the one i have has a black background so it looks really obvious.
Thanks in advanced, appreciate the help

First:
Map a starbackground (found on scifi3d) to a large sphere
Second:
You can use that video with black background...
key out the black and render the video to a targa sequence with alpha channel....
the map that file sequence to a plane in the 3d program... it should map itself to the transparancy/ opacity map too.... the alpha channel knows what's opaque or not.... then the black can't be seen... only the explosion....

thanks for the reply!, Got the explosion working but im a bit confused with the sphere, i made the material with the background as teh difuse and put it on a large sphere that was all around the objects and nothing shows up.

not to the diffuse.... you have top map the background to the color....
if then it still doesn't show up try to repeat the UV's (repeat the texture) 2 or 3 times...

Add a Normal Modifier to the sphere if you're going about it that way. Otherwise you'll only be able to see stars from outside of the sphere, rather than from the inside.

Looks great man.
Can I ask you how you made those great looking lasers in after effects? is it just the basic beam or whatever you call it? :P
Oh almost forgot, lots of people use the trail plugin to create a nice photon torpedo look in max. Thought it might help. The page is in Russian but the plugin itself is English

Thanks for the comments.
To make the lasers (in AE) I start off with the beam effect, then put the finished beam into a new comp with a black background, and make the beams completely white (or very slightly yellow). Then I make another comp, duplicate, blur and screen the beam, like a lightsaber. Then I screen it into the final comp and add colour balance. Oh, and you can use After Effect's built in motion blur. That helps. I usually tweak this though, depending on the size, speed and power of the laser beams I want to make
I've downloaded that plugin for the trails, and I'm working on some torpedo tests at the moment. Thanks again for the great comments!

Animation's nice and very clean. Just speed it up, get more drama with the speed and camera-work. Keep up the good work.

Hi, I'm having a bit of trouble in MAX.
I have my ships linked to dummies which are going along paths, and I was wondering if there's a way to rotate the ships on their own axis, to make them spin while going along the path, like when Anakin's ship spins in the beginning of Episode 3, just before he destroys the missiles that are following him. For some reason I can only rotate them according to the world axis, and not the individual ships' pivot.
Any help would be great.

You can reset their pivot point if you're having problems with that by getting to the Hierarchy tab (middle one i believe) and choosing reset pivots. Otherwise, Choose "Local" in the top middle bar for pivot (Should be set to View).

Ok thanks for that. I knew it was something really simple, I just couldn't figure out what it was.
All I had to do was set the reference coordinate system from "view" to "local".
Thanks again!
