Hey guys, Im making a earth space scene with a spaceship flying by .
This is what I have so far

now my problem is the clouds , thats the closes i will get but they dont look very realistic , volumetric like. I have made a bump map with a mix of noises and dent and noises on sublevel to try to simulate the formations but it doesnt look very good.
How would anyone approach doing clouds that look better that that?
cheers

do u mean the atmosphere? If so I just used a gradient ramp with diffuse bluish gradients and same for opacity just monotone to take the other parts out and I used a fallof map to define shadow/light parametres

Is there land? It looks like it's a water planet. I can ee a sort of edge near the right of the image, but is that land?

One of the only few things you can try to add more depth to your clouds is adding multiple sphere meshes with the cloud layer by itself. You'd have some clouds of varying heights. Apart from that, that's about as good as one can get with just textures and clouds. Other methods are simply using a high-res matte painting with real photos of earth's clouds from space, and/or actually creating volumetric clouds.

Yea. There's only so many ways to do this. Either manually or with plugz. Manually you just take what you are using now for clouds and alter it to make more but diff. layers. You could use 2D planes to map this on and vary the levels for a 3D effect of depth... or use a bos to map to making it more 3D.

Try to find some NASA footage.

It couldn't get any more real than that.

There's a significant difference between a High Res 2D image and a 3D planet that can be moved around at any angle and any lighting condition.

I suggest to do the thing with a multi layer cloud image sphere's. That work best and fast. you could however generate particles from a cg Sphere mapped with a cloud texture.
