Can't beat wool though. The most awesome look for a robe ever!

There's some nice wool flannel at lincraft at the moment which is $15 a metre. That would work really well. Or you can wait until after the end of the winter and hope that its in the clearance area. That's how I got mine on sale... being in the right place at the right time.

Hi there D_R.
It depends on the material that you use as far as cost of finished product goes just as SP has mentioned.
For example:
If you use wool you are most likely looking at $20.00 for 1 meter length, xs. 7M = $140.00
or
If you use what MS has (cashmere wool - very, very nice)
you would be looking at about $40.00 for 1 meter length,
xs. 7M = $280.00
or
You could look at what I used (Winter weight Pola fleece
xs. 5M I also have left-overs) and that's about $8.00 for 1 meter length, xs. 7M(you) = $56.00
BUT Now is the time to look, either at Lincraft or Spotlight (they were the two I looked at) while the shops still have 'Winter' stock, if you wait to long it will be summer and you will have to wait untill next season, like what happened to me a couple of years ago.
Also cotton thread I would use 'Gutermann' this stuff is strong and is good to work with, I have tried others but I end up going back to the 'Gutermann' brand.

I would have to agree, wool can be expensive & it can be heavy too sometimes & can be quite warm, but it definately gives the best look IMHO

Consider a robe an investment too. I've had mine for nearly 3 years and it still pretty much looks the same and isn't damaged or anything... and I have worn it a lot!

I've had my robe-2yrs and cloak-4yrs now, I also wear them alot in winter.
As long as they are looked after, they will last for years.
May consider upgrading to wool next season though, for my costume.

Right. Went out today with a mate and found fabric. Actually, she found the fabric. Now to go through the trial and error process I call making a costume without a pattern...
Actually, getting the fabric today means I can get started a week earlier than I anticipated, which is a definite bonus. If I stick to my normal routine (which is keep working until stupid-o-clock in the morning) I should have it finished by next weekend. I hope.

It's blue. And the bottom half is almost finished. Which is scary in 4 odd hours. If I'm really lucky I'll be able to finish it before Uni goes back, and get to work on a Dark Jedi for Skip. Incidentally, can you recommend a pattern for the Dark Jedi robes?

Blue huh? Is it light blue?? I'm looking forward to seeing it when it's done Glad you've made some great progress so far.
A pattern I've used in the past is McCalls 2940. It comes with the pants pattern as well, so that's handy. The tunic pattern is good too, though you might need to make it slightly longer, and the sleeves a bit wider, but those are easy things to fix.

It's possibly light blue, yes. If you were guessing the tatooine gown, you'd be right.
The skirt is finished. Aside from the beadwork, and I'm seeing a friend who makes jewellery later today, so I'll be talking to her about that. Not sure if I'll get her to do it for me or I'll do it myself. *shrug*
I'm just hoping I have enough fabric for the top half. If I don't, its back to Lincraft.
I'm sort of using the instructions from Padawans, but those are based on using a stretch fabric, so I suspect that I'm going to have to improvise a little as what I'm using is only a one way stretch. It's the being able to get into the top that is the problem. I suspect that I'm going to have to use a zip, either at the back or along the side. It is rather snugly fitted. Although I suppose I could just go with a wrap-around tie at the back, which means I could tighten it up so that it fits properly. I'm not too sure about that idea though, as the tie could be a little bulky and ruin the shape of the cloak.

Excellent!
I don't know if you've seen it or not, but there have been some recent posts to the thread on this costume in 'Costuming and Props':
http://boards.theforce.net/costuming_and_props/b10019/6025263/p30
It might be a bit helpful to you.
Good luck with it. It looks a bit tricky, but if you have a bit of a play with it, I am sure you can get it to work

Thanks Starfire. I just ad a look at that thread and I feel like a complete novice! But it was very useful.
Query to anyone who does make costumes. Do most of you use patterns? I know it seems an odd thing to ask, but I tend not to.

Depends on the costume. Often most patterns need minor 'tweaking' and 'creative manipulation', but yeah, I tend to use a pattern. Or two, I might take something from one and something else from another, piecing patterns together to create what I need. It's part of the fun.
