Last night was the first I had heard of this, then today my friend who lives in Houston told me about it too. When It arrived in Houston, it was escorted by troopers and other various costumed people. How cool and fitting for Luke's lightsaber to make its new home the International Space Station (which I do indirect work for, by the way.)

Correction: Not home, just making the round trip. I misread one of the articles.

Anything that brings (positive) attention to the Space Program is good news to me.
BTW, all the TV news reports I've seen on this story incorrectly state that the "original" lightsaber (Anakin's handmedown Luke used in Episode IV) is the one going up... dispite the publicity shots of people holding or transporting the ROTJ saber.

RE: Luke's ROTJ lightsaber prop to be launched by Discovery
Heh I just came across an article about this tonight (which prompted me to visit these boards again--I really should swing by more often!)
Apparently the stories have been changing pretty consistently to correct for errors. People are so excited about this they can't type straight! One of the first stories the other forum I spend time on linked to actually stated originally that the lightsaber was to be jettisoned into space!
By the way, why do all these programs (I'm looking at the spelling checker for Firefox now) say that lightsaber is an incorrect spelling and should be separated to "light saber"? You'd think it would be an accepted part of the language by now.

The word "lightsaber" is trademarked, and that might be why it is not automatically included in some spellcheck programs. I've never seen it in a regular dictionary. (my copy of Word is no help for a baseline- I've added a ton of proper nouns and scifi phrases to its wordset).
But maybe the reason a browser might not OK "lightsaber" is because it's a compound word. I guess Firefox wants you to make smaller more easily translated words incase some foreign user wants to read what you wrote here. I just did a test and Babelfish did not recognise "lightsaber" or "droid". It did translate "light saber" and "android" though.
I dont use Firefox. Did it make you change what you wrote?

Nope, it just underlines words it doesn't recognize with the little red squiggly, then you can right click on the word to get the browser's suggested spellings--a pretty useful tool, actually.
