Oh man... this is tough... Obviously Raiders is classic... but Temple of Doom has that distinctive asian feel to it which I love... but then Last Crusade has the awesome Nazi themes... GAH! TOO HARD TO CHOOSE!

Well, they're all fantastic of course - five star scores all of them.

But in the end I have to give it to Raiders - if only for 'The Map Room: Dawn' which is one of the greatest pieces of film music ever written. Just the way it starts so quiet and builds and builds to this awesome climax. Amazing.

I like Crusade best, but in band one year we played Temple and I really loved it. So I'd say Crusade, Temple, Raiders.

Because Temple and Crusade do not have expanded editions, the listening experience on those albums is tighter than Raiders. But that seems more like an album structure thing than my actual preference on the material.

Ultimately the Ark theme in Raiders is a trump card for me. It's the single most powerful theme in the series, and I gotta go with Raiders because of that.

"Scherzo for Motorcycle and Orchestra" makes Last Crusade a winner. It's one of my all time favourite movie pieces, and for me is about as close as the Indiana Jones spirit gets to being embodied in one tune.

I love "Escape from Venice", too.

I just watched Raiders...

Would anyone call me crazy if I said the opening piece, from the main titles all the way up to Indy getting into the plane, was one my absolute favorite Williams pieces?

Raiders for me.

One thing I love about it is that all through the start of the film, with the traps and idols, there isn't a single statment of the Raider's March, and that the first time we ever hear it is when Indy is running away from a situation he's got caught in.

Says something about Indy's character, I think.

According to IMDB:

"The music playing in the scene where Indy meets Adolf Hitler is adapted from the "Königgrätzer Marsch" by Johann Gottfried Piefke (1815-1884)."

Raiders Of the Lost Ark is a classic. It has the first and strongest rendition of the Raider's March and the beautifully haunting Ark Theme. The Map Room piece is probably one of the greatest pieces of music ever! But Raiders in my opinion has too many action cues that go nowhere and I found Marion's Theme to be too sappy. I don't know why it reminds me of Leia's Theme so much.
I didn't care too much for Temple of Doom except for the Mine Car Chase music. The rest was pretty snoresville to me.
IMO I think The Last Crusade is the best out of the three. The theme for the Holy Grail is the pinnacle of all movie music and the Nazi theme was way better than the stormtrooper sounding music from Raiders. I guess I prefer music with stronger themes rather than ambient or random action cues. But that's just my opinion. peace
