Very good. Parts are very beautiful and other parts are just scary and even sad.

What a shock. I'm the only Star Wars fan in this thread who's a hip hop fan.

And that "it's not music" crap went out in 1985. Get with the times wink I don't care if people say they don't like it, but you can bring up probably 10 of your artists and I can make the same claims that you'd make against hip hop and they'd stick just as well..yet I wouldn't begin to say that your preferred kind of music isn't music at all.

Ya'll are missin out, that's all I'm sayin. I'm not gonna try to convince you. Maybe I'll pray for you or somethin wink

Peace,
Fatboy

Don't despair, Fatboy!

In the last coupla years or so, I've found that What I Listen To is broadening its base . . . less restricted to genre or style or popular trends. This has been fresh air to me, in that I am "discovering" all kindsa new favorite songs -- never mind the stylistic trappings, or what section of the CD store you find them in!

A typical "playlist" for me may read: King Crimson, Scud Mountain Boys, The L.A. Guitar Quartet, Belle&Sebastian, Wyclef Jean, Simon & Garfunkel, then Dave Brubeck.

But this of course only came about after long periods of single-genre focus -- originally, and at heart, a la klingklang above, I'm a Prog Rock freak -- '70s Genesis, Marillion, Yes, Rush, Peter Hammill, etc.

If its good, it's good. I find I take to stuff that is solidly written, has a strong melody, and a lyric (if applicable) that isn't trite, crass, or saccharine.

As for Tori Amos - I like her first two (solo) albums more than her later stuff; the 'Under the Pink' B-Sides ("Sister Janet", "Daisy Dead Petals", etc.) are my favorite batch. I saw in concert often in '92-'93, when it was just her and her piano. Intense.

What is 'Emo'? (Phillips...?)

Emo is another style of music that is sort of a mix between Punk rock and Alternative.
Very mellow at times with an even tone that can break out and change speed at any time in the song.

Some good examples of emo are Braid or Get up Kids.

btw: I actually have nothing against hip hop, seeing as how just the other day my friend and I where listening to this CD we bummed off a friend by an artist known as "White Cleft".
As far as I know he used to be in the group "Fuji"

I don't have anything against Hip Hop or that whole Rap/Metal scene.

I like Outkast, Rage against the Machine, The Fugees and I have some other Mp3s by Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit. I don't like to limit myself to 1 genre. Music seems to represent the mood I am in that day. Is it that way with anyone else? If you hear Hole blasting from my Ram Charger, then don't mess with me that day or if I am playing musicals that means I am in a sing song mood. :-) Ok myabe I should get off my soapbox.

Music does show my emotional stance for that day, but often it can change it as well.

Rokangus, I saw Weird Al about this time last year in concert. He did an amazing show!I don't know if you ever have seen him in concert, but there was always something going on, on-stage, if he wasn't performing then he had a big screen down and he was showing little parody type promos, like "30% chance of rain"

I like the 1 song by 'They Might Be Giants', the 1 that goes "no you can't go back to constantanoble"

They Might Be Giants! They might be fake, they might be lies, they might be big big fake fake lies....

My fave album of theirs is "Lincoln". Who could argue with a lyric like, "If it wasn't for disappointment, I wouldn't have any appointments"? grin

******************************************

Some questions for those assembled herein:

This "Emo" music . . . does that term come from "Emotion" or "Emotional"? Is that a major aspect of this music?

And is anyone here familiar with that whole realm of Club/DJ/electronica music, and its sub-genres (e.g., Drum&Bass, Jungle, Trip-Hop, Acid, etc. etc.), that could really explain what it's about to me? I am curious to investigate it further; I'm only vaguely aware of it.

I think Emo is short for Emotional.

Back when I was like 7 or 8, my cousin Eric came up from Florida to visit. At the time, I (and my family, and friends) listened to a lot of country music. He gave me 3 mix tapes - Eric's Music Ed 101-303. These contain my favorite music ever - Techno, trance, alternative, and of course, They Might Be Giants. grin

I remember first hearing that song on Tiny Toons. It was a music video thing starring Plucky Duck in the desert.
