It's more The Sixth Sense than Signs.

Definitely. It has some fabulous moments of intensity and beauty, but is mostly tense, dark, and brooding.

Overall, I would say it's one of the weaker ones, but it's still a Shyamalan/JNH score, so that isn't saying much. There aren't any knock-your-socks off moments ala Hand of Fate, but there are definitely some great pieces. It's a score that won't grab you if you just put it on and listen to it while working or surfing the internet. It requires a dedicated listen or two.

Bernstein, Elmer
The Birdman of Alcatraz
Introspective Elmer Bernstein music...I greatly enjoy Bernstein in thunderous, action-mode, but it's the more subtle, heartfelt stuff like this score,Far From Heaven, To Kill a Mockingbird, and the quieter parts of The Great Escape, that I really love about his music.
+
Goldsmith, Jerry
The Wind and The Lion (complete score)
Thrilling stuff. I'd had the original album, and I'd rank it as my favorite Goldsmith score (along with ST:TMP) just based on that, but the remastered complete score gives it a bit more scope, and variation.
ttbk, Kingdom of The Crystal Skulls

It's excellent. One of JNH's best.

One of his best, really? I enjoy it very much, but there are several other scores I would consider much better -- Signs, The Village, Snow Falling On Cedars. It's certainly one of his most intelligently written scores, but that doesn't translate to one of the best for me, at least not yet anyway.

I'm not really a JNH fan, but most of his scores don't really work for me. (Same with Chris Young: I can appreciate their professionalism, but their music doesn't tend to move me or touch me particularly.) Perhaps I'll change it from "one of his best" to "one of his most appealing to me." It's no Lady in the Water, which is far and away my favorite JNH score, but it's immediately accessible to me in a way very few of his scores are.

That's interesting to hear. I've been a huge JNH fan since Waterworld and Signs is one of my all time favorites, but his latest output (aside from Lady in the Water) hasn't been stellar. He's kind of been doing the autopilot thing and I'm hoping that The Happening gets him out of this slump. His best work has always come from his Shyamalan scores.

Well, don't worry, The Happening is anything but autopilot. I'm curious have you heard The Water Horse? It's a really nice album presentation and features some of JNH's best action scoring during the finale.

I've been listening to The Water Horse over the last few days, actually. It's definitely a solid, well produced JNH score but I find it a little stale coming from him. It certainly has standout moments here and there but I feel like I've heard this score from him before. The Celtic inclusions do give it some identity, however.
I guess I just really want another Signs-caliber score from him.

I'm surprised people aren't mentioning I Am Legend, which seemed to catch many by surprise (in a good way) with its album presentation. I for one find that to be his best score between LITW and The Happening -- The Water Horse I don't much care for. There was quite a good cue in Charlie Wilson's War. "Turning the Tide," maybe it was called.

I Am Legend was certainly a welcome surprise (especially to anyone who saw the film as there was virtually no music in the final mix). I personally like The Water Horse more because it's the type of score that really got me started with JNH. He has a great fantasy/adventure sound (Dinosaur, Atlantis, Waterworld), and he returned to that in The Water Horse with cues like "Swimming" and the 4 closing score tracks. Plus, I've always been a real sucker for Celtic music.
"Turning the Tide" is an excellent cue, with the interesting choice of layering tribal drums over Handel's "Messiah", but the rest of the score is pretty standard fare.
