I Am Legend is good and definitely benefits from its album presentation (I hardly noticed it in the film), but as far as JNH scores go, I don't consider it among his best.

Basically my issue with his recent output is that he just uses the same ideas over and over but doesn't do anything fresh with them. Like "Deer Hunting" in I Am Legend which starts with an evocative piano idea, but just kind of fizzles with these worn out synth percussion effects that he's so fond of. Or his use of solo trumpet over the same basic string chords. Or that simple percussion rhythm from The Postman that he uses for so many of his action cues now.

These things are what I came to love about his music originally, but I'd like to see him experiment more. Especially since he's capable of getting higher profile projects at this point in his career.

James Newton Howard
The Happening

This reminds me more of The Village than anything else he's written. I really dig the three note "monster movie" motif.

Koyaanisqatsi by Philip Glass

Quite a hypnotic score and if you have seen the movie, the score is even more appreciated.

Excellent film and score. Unfortunately, I've never heard the music outside the film, but it is certainly its own character in the film and is, as you say, hypnotic.

I'm surprised people aren't mentioning I Am Legend, which seemed to catch many by surprise (in a good way) with its album presentation. I for one find that to be his best score between LITW and The Happening -- The Water Horse I don't much care for. There was quite a good cue in Charlie Wilson's War. "Turning the Tide," maybe it was called.

I've Just added "I Am Legend"

It was the M. Night movies that got me wanting JNH! I usually like the movie first and then consider the score

Signs is the only one I don't have.
And I'm trying to get Waterworld! Beautiful!

You should definitely consider getting the score, Philip Glass shows his talent at composing music that fits so well with the montage and themes of the film.

+ WALL•E - Thomas Newman

Thomas Newman has always been one of my favorite composers since I first got The Shawshank Redemption years ago. After seeing WALL•E today, I had to get the album. It has that unique Newman sound and the undeniable charm of WALL•E himself. Definitely a recommended purchase.

+Danny Elfman, Wanted (fine action score)
Andrew Lockington, Journey to the Center of the Earth (fine adventure score)
John Powell, Hancock (so-so, but the finale is excellent)

And a lot of others. I'm working on the list.

+ The Clone Wars (last week, actually)
+ The Iron Giant

+ the entire Cloverfield score tongue Okay, so it's only the Roar! Overture, but it's awesome, if purely because they had Giacchino write just an End Credits Suite that's like Godzilla (the old ones)

and apparently I never added the Return of the King Complete Recordings when I got them in December
