Hey all....I hope this is an apropriate forum for this question.

For all of you composers out there....what software are you using ?

I've put together a little orchistra-in-a-box, but between the bugginess and the non-computer-idiot-friendly interface, I spend more time pulling out my hair than actually accomplishing anything.

I'm looking for advice. What works for you ? I'm old school...you know, write it out manuscript form and pass it out to the performers happy

Presently im using cubase SE for sequencing and for samples I use Gigastudio 3.0 solo and Mirislav Philharmonik.

I don't need anything fancy....just a simple interface, old school style with the basics (crechendo/portamento/time sigs/etc)

Any recommendations ?

Thanks in advance

For Mac, GarageBand is brilliant considering it's free.

Personally, I use Logic Pro.

I use Garritan Personal Orchestra and a few free sound fonts on the side. For sequencing/notation, I use Overture 4.0.

I am very envious, Cerrabore. Garritan is very, very good. You should post up some samples of your stuff, some day.

Uh, I think you'll find that GarageBand, Logic and Overture can be used for scoring . . .

Get Geniesoft's Overture 4 if you really want to learn how to compose. It is relatively inexpensive, but has the best features I've seen.

i use mainly Finale when it comes to notation-sibelius is great when it comes to using Kontakt audio to make an mp3---but to make music i use protools and reason to record stuff--i mostly write choral, piano, and small esnemble stuff --nothing major like a 150 piece orchestra--not there yet!!

With Geniesoft's Overture 4, you can do notation and sequencing in the same application. Not so with Finale and Sibelius.

to re-iterate.

If your producing score for performers in an orchestra you CANNOT do it in garageband , or logic, or cubase. The scoring IS NOT up to it. Trust me - i do this for a living with big orchestras all the time , in abbey road, and for movies.... hows that for ego. Only kidding folks....

Sibelius, if your used to writing manuscript, is the only way.. Logic and cubase are useful for soloists or rough notes but are not up to the task. If your after managing separate parts for players and maintaining a conducters and librarian score then Sib is th eONLY package to use. Richard Vendome, a musicologist in Oxford, also started creating a package for this some years ago (early nineties i think), but gave up when Sib finally became the de-facto used by everyone for full score rep in orchestral works. Sib also has proper articulation settings, page management that works and now reads and implements all the SMPTE codes + frame rates necessary for STP.

Yes, Sibelius is the best simply for writing manuscript-like scores. However, saying that you CANNOT produce a score for performers in GB or logic (I don't know cubase very well) is a downright lie. You can, and I have.

hey bubs,

I didnt say you couldnt print out score for performers.... I said you couldnt manage a score. which you cant. You cannot work separate versions for different sections/players and maintain a conductors score AND an editors cue score. SX DOES NOT CONTAIN these facilities.. You also cannot properly page arrange.. (there are rudimentary controls for it).

Calling someone a liar is inflamatory. Manners perhaps? Have you ever managed 3000 pages of score for a set of film cues? Maybe you could show me where I'm wrong? Hmmmm?
