Question: Would a score by JW in the ST franchise be a good score? I think any score he does would be good, but really I guess would it be great? I think it would. I think it has the room for the beauty we expect in a sci-fi flick, as well as the fun music we've been missing as of late. After all, with it being about Kirk and Spock it should have some of the old Trek humor and adventure about it, and less "serious" drama as seen in the Next Gen. Movies. I think it would be perfect because he can write some amazing stuff and that franchise seriously needs to have a Perfect 10 in all regards to really bring it back.

Thoughts?

I think the most likely cantidate would be Michael Giacchino. I would really like to see if Williams would use older themes, other than Courage's theme. Either way, I want Horner back in. happy

Well, it's definitely an intruiging idea. Personally, I wouldn't mind it.

"Enterprise Clears Moorings" just played a few minutes ago in my random iTunes playlist, reminding me of what a great score that was by Horner. So I'd vote for Horner, or else Cliff Eidelman.

As much as I'd like to hear John Wililams' take on the Star Trek themes, you know that won't happen. Since it's JJ Abrams making the movie it's pretty much guaranteed that Michael Giacchino will be composing the score (I'm looking forward to that!)... but a part of me also says that to honor Jerry Goldsmith JJ should ask Joel Goldsmith if he's interested first.

Other than the Starship Chase, I wasn't impressed with Joel's music. That's like saying if John Williams died before Indiana Jones 4, we should get Joseph Williams to score it.

I've heard JW do the Star Trek theme for both the TV show and the original movie. There not bad when he does them. If I were him, I probably do it.

NOTHING is ever guaranteed.
David Arnold was supposed to do the soundtrack for "The Patriot"(you know directed and produced by those "ID4" chaps?) but somehow,Williams wound up doing the score.
You woulda thunk that Williams would do the music for "Lost In Space" feature film,"just because" but Bruce Broughton did a brilliant job nonetheless.

I'd like to see Williams steer clear of franchises for a while, honestly (aside from Indy IV of course).

His non-franchise output has been more interesting to my ears lately.

I have no desire to ever see Williams do a Star Trek score. I say Horner.

Or Eidleman. Depending on the tone of the film. But yeah, when it comes to Trek, I'd take Horner over Williams any day. (Still get goosebumps from the Search For Spock Prologue...)

Well and I think.... I dunno. Since Horner did such early ST film scores, his music now sounds a bit more... primative. Not in a bad sense, in terms of the universe. That musical style makes me think of older Trek. So in a way, Horner scoring this prequel style ST film would make ME feel at least that the film was earlier than the previous films.

It would be cool to get Horner back, I love the work he did on Star Treks 2+3. If he could put together something similar to that, I would be a happy man. I often find myself humming the theme to The Wrath of Khan.
