Hope that little fanfare Horner did makes it into the score. But I have high doubts, as all anyone can ever do is remember Goldsmith's TMP theme, which is good, but I prefer Horner's score.

Giacchino will respect what has been done, but soo many composers have scored the movies its tough to know what he will do. IMO each score has fit the movie very well. If he can successfully pull everything together while creating a original score, a difficult task indeed, it will be well worth it.

I think an almost total departure score, like Eidelmann's brilliantly good Star Trek 6 score, would be just fine.

I would love to see Horner do this one. There may be a chance for this, since the whole Rick Berman & Co. won't have anything to do with this one. Jerry Goldsmith has passed away, and I know his son composes, but I don't know about him. Horner just did such a fantastic job with II & III. It would really be nice to see him doing it again.

Interesting that this was just bumped. I just put together a mix of tracks from the first five Trek movies, and I was wondering about the possibility of a score combining the best themes from the franchise.

Given the setting of the new film, I think it would be ideal to use a few of the more recognizable themes from the original series, but with a full, movie orchestra sound.

Obviously the music that goes under the opening monologue should be used, and I even think the original main theme could be put to good use (listen to the finale of Search for Spock for an EXCELLENT example).

I wonder about mixing the best of Goldsmith and Horner, but I don't know how well the two sounds would blend.

I think the only existing theme that should be used is Alexander Courage's original Star Trek fanfare. No main theme from The Motion Picture and nothing from the Horner scores. Just the fanfare and everything else starting from scratch.

Agreed. Let's hear something new.

Even the VI score quoted Horner's Vulcan music.

The movie's major themes should be new, sure. Best to avoid a Superman Returns kind of "Let's use the old familiar themes to create a sense of continuity except they don't work because this new movie is SO different in style and tone" disaster.

Other than Courage's fanfare, nothing needs to be reused merely for the sake of reusing it. But at the same time, if there are parts of the film where bits of old scores would be perfect, I don't see why one would feel the need to reinvent the wheel.

I completely agree with you. Only a few themes should survive but the main title should be entirely new.

Themes to keep:
Courage's Fanfare (its not Star Trek without it)
Horner's Vulcan theme (worked well in three movies)
Goldsmith's Klingon theme (it really has come to represent the entire Klingon culture and it has been sorely missing since the first movie)

My two cents at least.
