RvD2: Ryan vs. Dorkman 2
A few years back, my good friend Ryan Wieber and I put together a lightsaber fight for the choreography contest hosted on the
Fan Films board
. Years later, YouTube came along, our film
Ryan vs. Dorkman
or
RvD
became a smash hit, and we decided to do a sequel.
On March 1 we released the sequel, viewable on
YouTube
, and a high-definition, high-quality AVI on
Stage6
.
The question you're surely asking yourself at this point is, why am I posting something rather off-topic, and which clearly belongs on the Fan Films board? Especially when I am not only a moderator, but a moderator of said Fan Films board?
Great question.
When we decided to do a sequel, we put out a call for donations from fans of the original and were flooded with support. Early on we made the decision to get an original score written for the piece, and brought a composer friend of mine on board the project. He, in turn, brought on a friend of his to help share the load of the project.
With their industry contacts and the donations of our fans, we wound up at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, recording our score with a full 60-piece orchestra, many of the members of which have played on such films as the SW prequels,
King Kong
, and P
irates of the Caribbean
.
Damon Tedesco
was our recording session mixer, and
John Rodd
did our final score mix.
Sometime fairly soon we will be putting up a version of the film with an isolated score, and additionally in approximately a week's time, Ryan and I will be conducting an audio interview with the composers, which will be included on the soundtrack CD. We would like viewers to send in questions for us to ask the composers during that interview, and I figured we might get some good and insightful questions here on the Film Music board.
Keep an eye out for the music-only version (I'll mention it here in the thread), and if you have any questions -- personal or professional -- post them here or PM me.

RE: RvD2: Ryan vs. Dorkman 2
Well, the first film used an edited version of the cue "You Have the Power" from Trevor Jones' soundtrack to
Dark City
. When the film got big, the lack of a license for the music was pretty much the only thing that prevented us from being able to show it on broadcast television and other venues. We decided not to give ourselves the same handicap with RvD2, and that's when we went for the original score.

DorkmanScott, congrats to you, Ryan, and everyone else involved in the production -- it turned out really well.
As for the music, I have to admit that I was quite surprised at how good it was. It's also really cool that you were able to record with a live orchestra. It's obviously influenced by John Williams' more modern action music, but there's certainly nothing wrong with that. If you're going to learn from someone, learn from one of the greats!
After listening to some of the clips on their sites, these two really sound like they have potential. And the fact that they use a live orchestra is just icing on the cake! Hopefully this film will help get their names out there (I noticed the YouTube video already has nearly half a million views).
I look forward to the upcoming CD and will certainly purchase it.
Good luck to you on your future endevors, whatever they may be. Are you looking to continue filmmaking, or is it just a hobby?

Hmmm, I thought it was against the rules and regulations to plug, or sell your products on tfn. hmm, amazing what moderaters get away with.

Well, considering he's part of the TFN community and the product is of general interest to the people around here I don't see why it's a problem.

I personally dont have a problem with it and think it's a good thing, in a way, just sayin it breaks the terms of agreement.
By the way, the music worked well in the film, but for a 60 piece orchestra, it fell incredibly short!!!
I know Kyle Newmaster's style, it falls short of "A" class work imho.
P.S. DorkmanScott, why would you let something like the costs of pin-drops stop you from pushing RVD? Really, aren't you only looking for $1,500? Surely the 60 piece cost more then that!

FYI, Dorkman asked me, and I approved this thread prior to posting.
