Yeah I gotta agree there are a lot of times when the movie stinks and the score is good and vice versa.

A great example is Van Helsing that movie has a decent score but the movie stinks.

Martin Scorsesse's films scores have all been lackluster at best

I disagree. The Departed, while a bit repetitive, was a great score.

The Matrix scores aint horrible as a lot of people claim. If you think they are...well then your loss I suppose.

I disagree too that just because the film isn't good doesn't mean the score will suck.

I haven't read much criticism against the Matrix scores besides the fact that the first two didn't get great releases. I'm not a huge fan of those first two, but Revolutions is a stellar score as far as I'm concerned. The no holding back action and brass writing are amazing and the tender "Trinity Definitely" is my favorite cue of the entire trilogy. That wonderful love theme was always used sparingly, but to great effect.

I really liked the Matrix scores until I heard the John Adams concert works they were clearly inspired by. I still enjoy them, but wish they didn't have quite such a derivative sound.

Well (and Strilo I KNOW you'll disagree on this one wink ), here's another example.

John Williams is one of the greatest film composers ever. His music from the OT is considered some of the best (or at least most famous) film music ever. Aside from a few themes, his music from the PT is not.

Ignoring for a moment the well-known cutting and editing issues in AotC and RotS, I'd say that John Williams's scores to the PT suffer from a lack of inspiring action on the screen. It's hard to write an action cue on the same level as "The Asteroid Chase" when you don't have an action scene on the same level as the asteroid chase to set it to.

Let me put it another way: My favorite film scores are, for me, a special way of capturing and replaying parts of a particular film, without actually watching the film. They are more than just music; they're the distilled essences of the movies they come from. So I'd call great music written for a terrible movie great music, but not a great score.

Huh? So all Williams' scores ammount to is "action"? That's hardly a fair representation: take TPM, for instance -- "Talk of Podracing" has some great moments, and the opening of "The Racer Roars to Life" is beautiful. Then there's Qui-Gon's Theme, and of course "The Funeral of Qui-Gon"; plus on the action front there's the entirety of "Duel of the Fates". AotC is probably the weakest score, with the exception of "Across the Stars", though I'm very fond of "Yoda and the Younglings", too. I even like "The Meadow Picnic"'s bouncy, joyful love theme, despite accompanying the Worst Scene Ever. RotS gets better; essentially, every cue is at least a four star.

And I find they can be enjoyed out of context; soundtracks are usually released slightly prior to the film, so you not only get the experience of familiarising yourself with the cues, but the added bonus of finally matching them to their scenes. But the original listen is in no way diminished by not having anything to check it against.
