So, what's been delivered, and what's left to come?

I haven't bought many new scores this year. Nothing much has really piqued my interest:

Bridge to Terabithia (Promo)
by Aaron Zigman (I didn't exactly buy this one, but "came across" it)
Breach by Mychael Danna
Have Mercy on Us All by Patrick Doyle
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by Nicholas Hooper
Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End by Hans Zimmer
Ratatouille by Michael Giacchino
Zodiac by David Shire

My two favorites are easily Breach and Bridge to Terabithia (this needs an official release).

Possible scores to look forward to:

The Golden Compass by Alexandre Desplat (probably my most anticipated score this year)
Michael Clayton, The Water Horse, and I Am Legend by James Newton Howard
The Last Legion by Patrick Doyle
Across the Universe by Elliot Goldenthal

I'm sure there are others, but that's all that really stand out in my mind.

Oh, Goldenthal's getting back into films? This should be exciting.

I know, he doesn't score nearly enough films, and I really hope that Grendel gets a CD/DVD release.

And how could I forget to mention John Powell's Bourne Ultimatum that comes out Tuesday?!

I think The Simpsons might be worth a listen. It might be interesting to hear what Zimmer does with Clausen's material.

I think I have different musical priorities than you guys. I've bought no scores from films (or scores) released in 2007. I picked up one score from 2004 and that's it this year. Instead I've bought Pearl Jam, Tori Amos, Traveling Wilburys and other rock-type albums.

Only Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End by Hans Zimmer and Ratatouille by Michael Giacchino were really the more notable to me. Spiderman 3 was a major letdown since they aren't releasing a soundtrack and Elfman wasn't involved. Transformers is another since they aren't releasing that either. There were a few notable pieces (Autobot arrival as one of them).

Certainly was a downer year for film scores. No John Williams works, nothing even close to what X3, Superman Returns, Da Vinci Code, Casino Royale, heck, even Mission: Impossible 3.

2008 looks to be a very interesting year though with Indy 4 (a must-have for me), Iron Man (by John Debney), and Star Trek XI (Giacchino).

I think Rise of the Silver Surfer deserves note.

It's one of my favorites.

Well I just got the Simpsons score. Its fairly interesting, though not groundbreaking or wholly original. As soundtrack.net said it is heavily Elfman influenced as well as a touch of Gershwin. I seemed to notice a few bits of Rhapsody in Blue here and there in the score. My favorite track is "Spider Pig." Not necessarily because it's anything musically special, but rather because of the purely zany aspect of a choral arrangement of "Spiderpig, Spiderpig, Does whatever a Spiderpig does. Does he swing from a web? No he can't, he's a pig. Look out! He is a Spider Pig."

Honestly, about the only thing I listen to are film scores. I have season tickets to the local symphony orchestra and I listen to the radio when driving (mostly because scores have such a volume fluctuation, I don't even bother trying to listen to them while driving), but other than that it's pretty much all soundtracks. My problem with other music is that I'll hear one song from a band that I enjoy, but can't find anything positive in their other material.

I certainly respect everyone's taste in music, and don't consider other forms inferior -- just different. I have a real problem with people ridiculing other people's musical taste (not that I'm saying that's what you're doing, I'm just ranting tongue ). One of the guys who lived in the room next to mine last semester insulted anyone for listening to music older than 6 or 7 years rolling_eyes . One day I played "The Altar" from The Omen at full volume just to piss him off. He didn't say anything, but it gave me satisfaction to know that he had to listen to it after he would typically grace the entire hall listen to his music each day.

I usually stay within the boundaries of hair metal, power metal, classic rock, and film scores.

I'm primarily film scores as well, although I've started delving more into classical and concert works.

As for 2007's output so far, I've been really underwhelmed. POTC was fun and I liked Shire's Zodiac (although I don't own it yet), but the best scores I've gotten this year haven't been from this year at all.

I am still looking forward to John Powell's The Bourne Ultimatum and James Newton Howard's The Water Horse, especially after reading that the London Symphony Orchestra is performing on that one.

But next year is shaping up to be pretty interesting, so I'm optimistic.

Well, you can forget about Doyle's The Last Legion. It's pretty awful. It's really just a "blah" of a score. It's a bit like Eragon but without a great main theme.

I'm sure (hoping) As You Like It is a better effort from him. The synopsis just sounds more like his cup of tea. It's also a film by Kenneth Branagh who he typically does his best work for.

The Bourne Ultimatum wasn't much either. More of the same from the second score (which I still consider the best of the three), but with a slightly more orchestral sound. Overall, a weaker Powell score of late.
