But it sounds brilliant. Do you care more about systematic consistency than the beauty of the music itself?

Didn't Lucas say that you could watch the movies with only the music playing and it would "work"?

If that's the case, then here we have the equivalent of a plothole.

I didn't say it didn't sound great. As a piece of music, it certainly is very good. BUT it doesn't match with what's happening on screen

To go to an extreme, I could rescore Night of the Living Dead purely with Mozart. The music would be great, but it wouldn't match the film.

There is nothing wrong with that cue, musically. Only if you're a stickler for leitmotif does it have a problem.

Yes. tongue

No. Actually, I didn't say "Let's erase all the copies of the beautiful and beloved Ben's Death and replace them with new themes." I was hinting that an alternate (and more thematic) cue might be cool.

And I was mainly joking. happy

And actually, one can argue that Leia's Theme works at a thematic level now. Of course, in 1977, Williams did not know that she was the "other" or any of the events of ROTS, but Obi-Wan has just sacrificed himself for the twins, and now Luke must help deliver her and the Death Star plans to the rebel base.

Can you give me an example of a cue that IS wrong, musically?

Look, all I said was that I thought it was odd that Leia's theme was used, and you've turned that into "I hate the music because it doesn't follow leitmotif 'rules' "

I have no idea where that comes from, as it's certainly not anything I said.

The track itself is great, and is one of my favourites from ANH. All I said was that I find it odd that the choice was to use Leia's theme at a pivotal moment of the story where Leia wasn't involved.

Oops, hello. We must have posted at the same time. I was replying to Halibut's post before yours. By the way, I can think of a reason for Leia's theme in "Ben's Death" without even going into the prequels: "Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope." That line is also scored with Leia's theme, and I think the connection is clear.

Halibut, the first thing you said is that the cue is "kinda meh" for you. That's why it seemed to me the cue bothered you on more than a technicality. We're cool, though?

no probs happy

Musically the bit that accompanies the "noooooooo" is good, then comes the "meh" part until Han comes back into it.

(And it's only "meh" in comparison with other better tracks in ANH)

Good point. Actually, here's why it was selected:

John Williams, in Star Wars OST Liner Notes posted:
For "Ben's Death", I used part of the Princess theme in the beginning. I felt it had the most sweeping melody of all the themes in the score. This wildly romantic music in this tragic setting represents Luke's and the Princess' reaction to leaving Ben behind.

Now I'm not one to call JW a fibber, but if he's reading this I've got a couple of barrels in my back garden that need scraping tongue

The princess didn't have any reaction to leaving Ben behind. It was all about Luke's reaction. This seems like retcon to me happy

Umm, if I could I would play it in my car and speed throughout town causing accidents and near death but I have a family to take care of.

And while the cops were chasing me if I took one out I'd yell to my buddy Jesse "I got em" and he'd yell back "Great Kid Don't Get Cocky"
