Wow. I... I have no response that does not insult your hearing. ROTJ sounds horrid on both the Anthology and the SE set. All three of the OT scores sound bad enough that I don't really listen to them much.

Return of the Jedi SE Disc 2 is worlds apart from the corresponding material on the Anthology. SE Disc 1 sounds marginally better or very good in spots. The only major problem I have with the Anthology's material is that tape hiss is considerable, though not as bad as that of Attack of the Clones, a score recorded in 2002! The RotJ SE has no tape hiss whatsoever, but that's because it's horrible. The "mixes" sound like the Anthology material with heavy dehiss. Empire is the weak link for me. The Anthology sound is not sharp enough; the SE sound is sharp but horribly remixed (those cues not remixed by Risner sound almost the same as on the Anthology).

Thanks for not insulting me, though, which is in no way an implicit insult itself.

By the way, an even better Golden Age of Williams score remastering is Close Encounters. It would be awesome of the Original Trilogy score sounded like that.

Sorry... I just think the OT scores in all previous CD releases sound like ass. I really wish we could have a really great score release with great sound of these because they are incredible scores. Personally I think the E.T. 20th Anniversary CD sounds fantastic. It sounds better than many scores released today. I must plead ignorant on Close Encounters, as I have not heard it nor do I own it. Hell I haven't seen the film since I was a kid.

Actually the tracked music from TPM in ROTS for that cue is not called "Another Happy Landing".

Hence, my use of lower case letters. I suppose I could have said "the part in ROTS where Anakin takes the burning front half of the Invisible Hand down to the surface of Coruscant".

There's just no way you're remembering the Return of the Jedi Anthology correctly, then. It sounds almost modern and much better than the SE. The clarity, gentleness of sound and mix are great.

Don't remember being impressed at all by it (by present day recording quality standards) but then there's also the issue of missing half the music...

Cerrabore is right, the Anthology mixes for Return of The Jedi do sound better than the S.E. mixes. Just listen to "First Ewok Battle / Fight With Tie Fighters" on the Anthology set then compare it with the SE sets...you can definitely tell there's a major difference in clarity with the Anthology. Even the Battle Of Endor I is better on the Anthology set...

If you think the sound quality for the ROTJ SE set sounds better than the Anthology material then you need to check your hearing...

They may well sound better than the SE release, but that does not mean they sound as good as they should/could, nor does it mean that they sound as good as the E.T. 20th Anniversary CD. That was after all my original point. I won't be buying any OT soundtrack set until they go back, remix and remaster the scores using whatever 21st century tools we have at our disposal for improving sound quality. I want these things sounding as good as is technologically possible and it is my belief that they could sound as good as scores that come out today. Someone just needs to take the time and spend the money to do it right from the very best source tapes in existence.

Could the London Symphony Orchestra play with as much vigor as it did twenty-four to thirty years ago? Could Williams conduct with as much heart? I seriously doubt it. I've heard lots of recordings of Star Wars music, and nothing matches the original soundtracks.

Which leads us back to a good solid remixing and remastering of the best source tapes possible.

Save your money from other scores people, this looks like another garbage of a re-release....now excuse me while I go bash something in frustration of this.
