Buysoundtrax: "This Monday (1/28/08) . . . we will be announcing a new limited edition release. This will be our first excursion into the world of ANIMATION with a score to a recent film from a composer not known for his work in this field and who has never had a limited edition of one his scores released before.

The first 100 CDs purchased will be autographed by the composer.

Two weeks after that, we'll be releasing a newly recorded album of an un-used film score that the composer wanted to revisit and reshape into a new presentation."

I'm particularly curious about this latter. I'm hoping for something high-profile, like Shore's KING KONG, or maybe Silvestri's ideas for PIRATES, but it will more likely be something smaller. Ottman's STARDUST? Doyle's MR MAGORIUM? ALL THE KING'S MEN by Edward Shearmur? Marco Beltrami's ALIEN VS PREDATOR? Marianelli's A GOOD YEAR? There's too many out there to bother speculating, I guess -- though it's fun!

Re-recordings that don't have set dates yet but are in the works:

From Tadlow, a new complete (140 mins) recording of EL CID by Miklós Rózsa.

From Tribute Film Classics, we're getting SHE by Max Steiner, THE KENTUCKIAN and WILLIAMSBURG: STORY OF A PATRIOT by Bernard Herrmann, a couble CD-set of Steiner's CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE and ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, Korngold's PRINCE AND THE PAUPER, Frank Skinner's ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN. Latest I've heard, SHE and the two Herrmanns, the first batch of the bunch, should be available in late spring.

Well, according to the Superman Homepage today, there are serious rumors swirling that the "complete Christopher Reeve Superman films" score collection is on the way this year, to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the most famous Kryptonian. Yep. The complete scores to Superman I, II, III, and IV. There never even has been a score album for Superman IV! And the scores for II and III have only been available on CD via ultra-rare (read: "very expensive") imports!

Once again, the Superman franchise beats the pants off of the Star Wars franchise for "complete set" releases!

I know a complete scores collection WILL eventually come out for "Star Wars," but I would have thought the 30th Anniversary of "A New Hope" would have been as good an occasion as any!

Sheesh...

Anyway, I'll really look forward to this "Superman" set!

Two new titles from Intrada on Monday:
our newest Special Collection spotlights one of the greats from a legendary Oscar-winning composer. Historical film score aficionados should have a treat. 3000 copies will be available.

Our newest Signature Edition is the evocative score that David Mansfield & Van Dyke Parks wrote for Sony's recent Emmy-award winning mini-series BROKEN TRAIL, directed by Walter Hill, starring Robert Duvall, Thomas Haden Church and Greta Scacchi. Mansfield & Parks also garnered Emmy nominations for their impressive score. Nearly 72-minutes of it are on display. Only 1000 copies will be available so if you have to choose between catching the new RAMBO movie or buying this CD...

Also, I believe it came out last year, but there's one track, 4.5 minutes, of John Powell's score to P.S., I Love You on the soundtrack CD.

This isn't just a rumor; it's been all but confirmed by Film Score Monthly. Mike Matessino notes, "Forget everything you thought you knew." The most interesting possibility I've heard mentioned is that Williams wrote and recorded a partial score to Superman II before Richard Donner was fired from the project. The recently released Donner cut of Superman II includes a little never-before-heard music, but it may just be alternative cues from the first score.

There's also no doubt that we'll hear a lot more of Alexander Courage's Superman IV, as the film he scored was much longer than the theatrical release. Remember that this is the one that features new themes by Williams.

What I'm most excited about, of course, is a definitive and high-quality Superman. The Rhino release was great given the second-rate masters available at the time, but much better sources have now been located (this is confirmed by the isolated score track on the Superman DVD).

And the new Intrada is John Barry's Mary, Queen of Scots. In stereo but, alas, less than half an hour in length.

And they were Jay Chattaway's INVASION USA and Bruce Broughton's THE BLUE AND THE GRAY.

This coming week is going to be big.

This evening Intrada's releasing a score that has been issued on LP but not CD. Tomorrow afternoon BSX releases "a newly recorded album of an un-used film score that the composer wanted to revisit and reshape into a new brand presentation for this release." Thursday afternoon sees the release of FSM's Superman: The Music 1978-1988. The following Monday, one week from today, Varese is releasing 7 (!) discs for their CD Club, though it's not known if it's seven releases or if there's a box set or 2-CD sets involved, but they're hinting at something big.

And the next batch of Varese's regular releases have been announced. I don't remember when I last updated, but here goes: George Fenton's FOOL'S GOLD, Randy Newman's LEATHERHEADS, STOP-LOSS and HORTON HEARS A WHO both by John Powell (whose JUMPER just came out as well), and Patrick Doyle's NIM'S ISLAND.
