And the nominees are...

Best Original Score

Atonement (Dario Marianelli)
The Kite Runner (Alberto Iglesias)
Michael Clayton (James Newton Howard)
Ratatouille (Michael Giacchino)
3:10 to Yuma (Marco Beltrami)

Best Original Song

“Falling Slowly” from “Once”
Music and Lyric by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova

“Happy Working Song” from “Enchanted”
Music by Alan Menken
Lyric by Stephen Schwartz

“Raise It Up” from “August Rush”
Nominees to be determined

“So Close” from “Enchanted”
Music by Alan Menken
Lyric by Stephen Schwartz

“That’s How You Know” from “Enchanted”
Music by Alan Menken
Lyric by Stephen Schwartz

I'm actually pretty pleased with the list other than Michael Clayton. I'd like to see the awards go to Marianelli for Atonment and Menken and Schwatz for "Happy Working Song". However, we all know that the Oscars don't mean much based on past reputation, but it's still fun to root for your favorite.

I haven't heard Michael Clayton but I imagine it's a fairly standard low-key, dramatic Howard score. It's always nice when he's nominated, though.

As for the others I also haven't heard or seen Atonement or The Kite Runner so I can't really comment. That goes for most of Marianelli's work as well aside from The Brothers Grimm which, while entertaining, wasn't anything special.

I'm really glad to see Ratatouille up there, considering it was my favorite score of the year. 3:10 to Yuma was definitely solid and ranks as the best Beltrami score I've heard so far. Not sure if it's Oscar-worthy, but it was an extremely slow year.

Michael Clayton isn't really like any of Howard's other dramatic scores. It consists almost entirely of electronic drones and thumps. I have nothing against electronic scores if done well (see Isham's Crash), but Michael Clayton is basically atmosphere more than anything. It worked in the film, but did nothing to elevate it in my opinion.

The only one of the nominees I haven't heard is The Kite Runner which I've heard some nice things about, so I'm looking forward to giving it a listen.

Michael Clayton was essentially temp tracked with Freedomland.

I liked Atonement and parts of 3:10 to Yuma, but I liked Ratatouille better than both.

It's too bad Menken got three nominations, though he did deserve them, but he'll probably end up splitting his vote like what happened to Williams with Memoirs and Munich. Though, given how much my girlfriend and all of her friends are singing "That’s How You Know," I can probably see that winning.

Who's with me in saying thank god Santoallalla isn't nominated for anything this year? Woohoo!

It's so stupid to nominate three songs from the same thing. I also think it's insulting that nothing from Into The Wild was nominated. Spread the love a little bit, Academy.

Not really. Three DISNEY songs will make fantastic production numbers for the telecast, and the words have already been written so the strike can't stop them. Goooooo ratings!
