As for Chewie being in the HST, he does appear quite a lot. The second book opens up with Han having just being kicked out of the Empire due to Chewie and the Wook is following him around everywhere. Of course, Han doesn't want him around at this point and tries to get rid of him on numerous occasions, but in the end, they stick together. It's interesting to see their friendship develop over the course of the last two books.
