Yea, Shyriiwook is quite difficult for a human to learn and understand. If you go by the HST, Han grew up with a female Wookiee named Dewlanna aboard the Trader's Luck, who acted like Han's surrogate mother. She taught him Shyriiwook among other things during his time with Shrike.

Really stupid question but what is the HST? (I assume it's Han Solo something or other.)

Sorry. blush

It's the Han Solo Trilogy by AC Crispin. Great set of books if you haven't had the chance to check them out yet. They start with Han's early life on the streets and they bring you right up to the events of ANH.

I haven't read that trilogy yet, but I intend to very soon.

Good question, Ludo.

That Wookiee language is hard. I want no part of even attempting to learn it.

I wonder if the was ever time when Han had to speak it. I'm sure any human attempting to do so would sound ridiculous.

I think I read somewhere that it's impossible for humans to speak it. Much like it's impossible for Wookiees to speak Basic due to the structure of their vocal chords, the same can be said about humans and Shyriiwook. nerd

As for Chewie being in the HST, he does appear quite a lot. The second book opens up with Han having just being kicked out of the Empire due to Chewie and the Wook is following him around everywhere. Of course, Han doesn't want him around at this point and tries to get rid of him on numerous occasions, but in the end, they stick together. It's interesting to see their friendship develop over the course of the last two books.

Lies. At least in reality. I can speak Shyriiwook IRL. tongue

And I also make wookiee-like growls when I yawn occasionally.

Well, to speak it properly...in terms of the GFFA. tongue

It's more than likely you're actually insulting someone important. You know how that goes. wink

I've always wondered if Han ever had to actually talk in Shyriwook too. I think that as long as a Wook could tell that you knew it and they understood Basic than it was all good. However if they could not speak Basic than there was probably a problem.

Hmmm, that might be worth the read...seeing how their relationship evolved.

Oh, definitely.

The only thing I wish they would've included was the actual incident that got him kicked out of the Empire, but the author was told that was off-limits. Although, we do know that it was rumored that Han earned his Second-class Bloodstripes(the yellow ones) through the events surrounding Chewie's rescue. It had to be pretty big. Maybe Lucas has something special planned for that. thinking

I read somewhere that he got kicked out of the Imperial army because he was in charge of a slave world with Wookiees on it, including Chewbacca and he freed them instead of following orders(I can't remember if he was ordered to kill them or what) and he escaped with Chewie and others and went on the run and became a smuggler(I could be wrong about that)

That's what I read in The Hutt Gambit, I'm sure I read it. I don't know how that topic is still off limits because that's something I know I read.

The scene itself wasn't in the Hutt Gambit. Crispin mentioned that she couldn't write it out and it was pretty much left to the imagination. So, all we have to piece it together are the few words Han mentions at the beginning about Nyklas whipping Chewie.

After doing more research, it appears it was later fleshed out in the comics, which would explain why I didn't read about it. I'm not a big comic fan, I'd rather stick to novels.
