hugs for Padmé! I'm working on an essay about her right now for SagaJournal.com and I swear I'm going to continue my "Seeds of the Future" story wink .

Even though Padmé's fate had been sealed for more than 20 years and I knew it was coming in ROTS, her death still saddens me. The final shot of her on her funeral bier, holding the japor snippet on her tummy... cry cry cry . It is the single most heartbreaking moment in SW for me. What a cruel, unfair galaxy!

Anapad and Dawn summed it up for me. She's a great character!

*cry* You're right, you're just *so* right.... I mean, to the very end, she held onto that love and faith....she wouldn't be swayed from it, she knew what her heart was telling her, what her soul truly, deeply believed in - and that was Anakin....it always had been Anakin! The man that she loved, and who loved her in return....the man who completed her, really allowed her to *live*, and to just be herself....her beloved life-mate and husband, and the father of her child(ren)....she loved him, and would *never* stop....even into death, and beyond....and *that* takes real strength and courage, too. Come what may, to love someone so deeply, to have such trust and faith in them....when you really do know them, best of anyone....that really is one of the strongest things that a person can ever do, and *be*. And that japor snippet pressed into her hand says everything about their enduring love....*her* love for the man she knew he must still be....and, also, about her sheer strength of will.

The courage of love....and of trusting in her heart, just letting go - being herself - and doing what it bids her....being true to herself, in other words....that really is one of hte most purely strong, brave, and entirely heroic things that I think someone can ever do. happy

Dawn.

I just love her character. But I think they should have had more scenes of her in AOTC and ROTS because it's kind of boring without her. I like the scene (it's a deleted scene from AOTC) where Anakin meets Padme's family and padme's sister asks padme if Anakin is her boyfriend and she says he's just a friend. lol rose

I know what you mean. It was like watching Titanic; you already know how it's going to end, and that it's going to end badly, and yet you can't stop watching. While watching ROTS, in the back of my mind I kept hoping that maybe GL would change his mind and have her live at the end, but noooo. Just had to keep the plot consistent. Gosh! tongue

Padme's funeral was the saddest SW moment for me. Seeing the japor snippet, which a young Tatooine slave boy had given her years ago, resting between her hands was almost too much. cry I had to conciously think to myself - this is just a movie.

Are you sure? happy *paddling down River DeNial*

I most definitely have to second what you're saying, though, about how seeing her with that japor snippet, held by her, treasured to the very end and even beyond - given to her as a token of love and admiration, by a slave boy who knew even so many years ago that his destiny was bound with hers....it really proves everything about the enduring power of love in general, and of *their* love in particular, of course....the sheer strength of it, and the absolute, granite-hard strength of her faith as well. That japor snippet truly is a token of love beyond the boundaries of all life and death....a love which stretches across the stars, and beyond them....a love which gave Padme, too, such tremendous strength and courage - gave her even more to fight for, that's for certain....namely, that happy future, "one day"....oh.... *sniffles* 'Course, I'm already beyond being a total wreck by that point, for sure....but like you, I'm only losin' it even more come this point.

Pure, pure sadness and heartbreak, for sure, but oh....it's also such a beautifully bittersweet, poignant and heartfelt, and completely *true* symbol of something very powerful and enduring....of a love so beautiful, so precious, so passionate and pure....a love which, in the end, could *never* be truly broken - because, of course, love *never* can be. Among innumerable other things, that's absolutely what Padme, too, showed us.... happy

Dawn.

Padme trusted Anakin till the very last moment ("there's good in him")... cry cry cry

She's such a nice and virtuous character, maybe too nice for her own good.

I didn't like that the ROTS portrayed her as weak, something she is not.

I completely agree with all of this.....especially the last line, about it being just a movie. I love Padme, and seen her die was very hard.

Um, where would people somehow be getting the impression that Padme is "weak" in ROTS? Are they even watching the same film we are? happy Look, the fact of the matter is, we've already seen her as the strong warrior queen, fighting her battles in the diplomatic realm - and, as need be, also physically....with a blaster in hand....but *only* if there is no other way. But however she does it, she's a fighter to the core, regardless. happy And we've also most assuredly already seen her in the aspect of the warrior-senator....fighting much those same diplomatic battles, but this time with the knowledge that war could be looming close, to endanger the Republic she so loves....and naturally that just spurs her even further to try and find a diplomatic solution - to avoid the war that she knows could destroy everything. That kind of conviction, too, takes real strength and devotion....showing her to be even more dedicated to her cause.

And, again, she also demonstrated perfectly well that if pushed to it - if she had no other choice - then she *would* physically fight, with blaster in hand....right there in the dangerous thick of battle - just doing what must be done, in the spirit of being a warrior for her people....determined to retain the peace that she has treasured for so long. She's a warrior who doesn't necessarily go out actively seeking war, but when it did come to her - when she had to face it head-on - then she *absolutely* proved herself more than worthy.

And in "Sith"....she proves that she is *still* fiercely committed to her preferred diplomatic approach; even when the clone wars have been raging for years now, and countless billions of beings have died, and so much chaos and carnage has erupted all over the galaxy....*still*, despite the great threat that the Separatists pose to her, and to everyone, she's still unshakably willing to try diplomacy yet again....if it has even the slightest chance of working, and avoiding more carnage, then she's all for it - because that's what she knows best. And it takes real strength, and the sheer courage of conviction - the faith in what she truly, deeply feels is right - to keep sticking with it like that for so long....to still be open to diplomacy with the enemy, even then, just to end the fighting at last....for everyone's sake! And, moreover....what Padme also is, in "Sith", is a devoted, compassionate, strong wife and life-mate to a formidable Jedi husband....

Look at how she consistently reassures him that she's not going to die in childbirth - she sees his very real terror, she knows that his dreams are really never "just dreams", and that they can be visions much worse and far more substantial....yet still, she's unwavering in her support and compassion, and she shows real strength when time and again she comforts him that she'll be alright. She has no fear of dying in childbirth - much like what she told Anakin just before they entered the arena in Geonosis, when she softly said, "I'm not afraid to die" - she was being his bulwark of support, a real mainstay of compassion and courage....precisely what Anakin needed. And that, too, takes real strength on her part....but it is only the strength of character, and of her caring heart, which we always know Padme has possessed. happy Furthermore, in "Sith", Padme is also a fiercely strong and protective mother-to-be who knows what her child(ren) needs, and thus she'll stop at nothing to ensure it *can* be so.

Finally....she has real, true, enduring strength of faith in Anakin - the complete courage of her convictions, and the pure trust in the husband she truly, deeply loves....and no matter what else is going on, or what others might try to tell her, *she* knows better....she knows *Anakin* better than that, and thus she's quite simply strong enough to not knuckle under to exterior pressures. When everything's riding on it, she has that granite-hard core of inner strength which gives her courage, and bolsters her unwavering faith....and allows her to do what she must....what maybe only she can do. happy

Yes....in the end, she did lose the will to live, and that was why she passed on in the course of childbirth - but she did *not* give up. That's a very fundamental distinction that simply must be made! happy Not *once* did Padme ever give up on anything, or *anyone*.... Losing the will to live, as happens to some people, is *not* a weakness....it is just - something that happens to them, due to personal tragedies they just can't bear, stresses that their soul can't survive. In this case....Padme has seen the Republic she's loved and fought so hard for, come crumbling down around her....she's been forced to confront the dreadful truth that Palpatine, her trusted once-advisor and supposed *friend*, was in fact a Sith Lord bent on destroying everything that *she* had worked so hard to maintain all these years. And, yes....she had seen the man she most loved - tormented, suffering, confused, twisted around, seemingly lost....but still, *she* never lost hope in him.

To the very end, irregardless of everything else that happened, what was done to her - in the swirl of torment and confusion, anguish and seeming betrayal - she was strong enough to *know* that she was right about her Ani....strong enough to love him more than anyone else ever could, to always love him *enough* and then some....strong enough to have unswerving, complete, total, beyond-death-itself faith in him. And perhaps it's hard to imagine anything more compelling than that.... happy

Dawn.
