1 December, 2006- Nativity will be in theatres. What's Nativity, you may ask. Well, the description in USA Today is as follows: Kiesha Castle-Hughes (Whale Rider) plays the Virgin Mary trekking with Joseph to Bethlehem for the birth of Jesus.

from Queen to the mother of Jesus. i'd say it's a pretty good trade.

Nice! I shall definently check this out... I loved Whale Rider!

Oh, you know what I realized was really similar to handmaidens? This anime called Mai Otome... basically there's a school that trains girls to fight as bodyguards along queens, princesses, presidents, etc. They go further, and give the girls magic powers, only to be unleased by their "Masters", or the person they bodyguard. Usually, the girls wear this maid uniform and help the serving, cleaning, etc, and are supposed to act like shadows (although some don't, for comical relief) but come crises, they run and fight like no other. It's kinda cutsy, but they definently go further into the not-just-decoration-ness of handmaidens.

I have never seen "Whale Rider", but it is one my list of movies to watch. I will be interested in hearing more about the movie as it gets closer to that time.

As for the ladies-in-waiting, they were important, just lik the handmaidens are. I don't think most realize just HOW important they are.

I agree Lady Eirtae... tooo quiet... worried and look at all this dust! *sneezes*

Perhaps if we tempt with treats *sets out brownies* and a handmaiden question we'll get some people to come nosing in...

Erm... so. Question... hmmm... why do you guys think GL (or anyone for that matter) has left the handmaidens so untouched in "canon" fiction and marketing? I mean, they have a fan base (us) that's proven to be resiliant and mildly (highly) obsessed. I mean, I haven't read a whole lot of profic lately, but it seems that they're pretty much going for the Jedi and super-old Luke/Leia/Han and their spawn.

I like to think it's fate and that I'll take over marketing and run a whole brand/series of Handmaiden stuff through Lucasfilm :-p

Probably not though... what does everyone else think?

Just to make some small noise, Sofia (Saché) Coppola's Marie Antoinette, feature Rose (Dormé) Byrne will be screened at The Cannes Film Festival (not sure it will be in competition or not).

And there is a new POTC2 trailer out, featuring Keira (Sabé) Knightley.

Well to comment on the POTC2 trailer, it is good. And she gets to fight it looks like! Finally!

And I think they do not believe there is a fan base, or they just want them to be like shadows, which is foolish, in my opinion.

Hey now, don't make me get out the hose! tongue

Besides the teaser trailer that is available on the Narnia DVD, there is suppose to be a full-length trailer out there. Don't know if it is showing before Disney's The Wild or will be showing with Mission: Impossible 3 this weekend, but I caught a glimpes of it as Access Hollywood ended their show with the last half of it on Monday, I think. What I saw looked really cool. cool

Even though it's late, I'll take a shot at this.

Though I hate to type this, I don't see any sign that the EU will ever do anything with the handmaidens. Somehow, I suspect that, as Padmé was, until quite recently, off limits to EU writers, the handmaidens were as well. After all, most people do see them as shadows--merely reflections of Padmé, not independent people with their own lives and stories.

And now?

Well, Padmé is dead. And with her gone, the handmaidens are gone as well, as far as official literature is concerned. I also doubt the EU is going to go back in time to when Padmé was still alive and her handmaidens served her, only forward into the intertrilogy period. Not to mention the usual post ROTJ.

Also, while it's true that the handmaidens have a fan base (well, I don't need to tell anyone here that), it is very small compared to those shipping Jaina Solo with (fill in the blank). And in order to warrant the cost of publishing a book, a character needs a *massive* fan base. I've heard several times that LucasFilm doesn't feel, for example, the Naberrie family is popular enough to warrant even a small subplot, let alone their own book.

There is the recent Jude Watson book "Death on Naboo," but if there are any handmaidens in there, I haven't heard about it, and from what I have heard, the focus is on Jedi characters. No surprise there. This does indicate that Naboo has been opened, if only a little bit, to EU writers--but the handmaidens remain invisible. (Like, there is no mention at all of Queen Apailana's handmaidens during her assasination, only the admittedly brave royal guards who defended her.)

However!

If LucasFilm ever did start doing something with the handmaidens, I'm not sure how well they would do it. I've read very little of the EU, but I've heard not-so-nice things about the direction it's going in. So perhaps this is for the best.

I think also after the decoy trick in TPM and AOTC, they felt there was no need for the handmaidens. At least, that is how it seems. I do not personally agree, but they seemed to just be used as decoys in the movies, though they got to fight a little in TPM.
