Characters is what makes Star Wars saga one of the most succesful Movies franchises ever.

My question to you is which trilogy has the better character the PT or the OT.

Personally I don't have a preference. I love the more laid back characters of the OT and I also love the More sophisticated Jedi toned characters of the PT.

Discuss.

Overall, I'd say the OT characters are better.

Yoda, Obi-Wan, Palpatine, R2D2 and C3PO are in both, so that's a wash. Especially since those characters' personalities don't change much if at all. Both trilogies also have good secondary characters, with the exception of one really cool character (Qui-Gon) and one really lame character (Jar-Jar).

The main characters are where I see the big difference. The PT has Anakin, a fairly typical selfish teenager, and Padme, who seemed to lose all her courage and emotional strength sometime between TPM and AOTC. It didn't help that neither of these characters were portrayed very well (except for possibly Anakin after he becomes Vader) and that the dialogue was awful. The OT, on the other hand, has Luke, a classic hero; Han, an awesome dude with some great wisecracks; and Leia, a super tough yet still vulnerable heroine who was the first of her kind in the 70's and is still quite a unique character today.

Great thread.

The OT

Darth Vader
Palps
Luke
Han
Chewie
Leia
R2-D2
C-3PO
Yoda
Boba Fett

The PT

Darth Maul
Sidious
Anakin
Obi-Wan
Padme
Dooku
Jango Fett
Grievous
Mace

Okay so they both contain the same characters in both trilogies at times. For me I became a fan of the OT since I can remember. Darth Vader is my personal favorite and hence the fanatical obsession with the saga. Han,Luke,Chewie,Leia the driods. Thats where it started for me so they are better characters.

The PT has given us some great characters. Maul. Palpatine. Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan has especially been given a great status in my mind now after the PT. The back story of Palpatine and the increased development into the transition of him becoming the Emperor has boosted his likeability factor IMO and as a result of ROTS he has become my second favourite character as an overall.

Favourite characters

1) Darth Vader (OT)

2) Darth Sidious/Palpatine (ROTS, ROTJ)

3) Darth Maul

As an overall the OT has better all round characters but as a result of the PT it has given me 2 new characters that I think are brilliant.

Lucas did a great job most of the time.

Most unlikeable character OT

thinking I'm sure there's some but none that stand out.

Most unlikeable character PT

Jar Jar
Boss Nass
Nute Gunray

In PT they are spread out across the galaxy, doing different stuff and being seperated because of their differances.

The OT heroes are much more like a team of heroes working together to defeat a bigger evil.

Well said. I also think that the OT characters were a lot more interesting and developed in their personalities.

oye such a dilemma.

The OT characters are my personal favorite. Those characters have so much depth, you want to know them, to help them and befriend them, or to destroy them and rid them from the galaxy. depends on who the character is. Han Solo is this rugged rough smuggler with a lopsided grin that could melt the heart of any woman. You can't help but love this character. he's a rouge with a big heart and you know that behind all his tough extior and smug attitude that he really does care.He was the character who was experienced who knew the rough sides of life who was worn in the ways of the galaxy and made by best he could. I always loved Han Solo. He was always my favorite character. Princess leia, her regail heir and her flawless strength. she's so tough and so determined, she believes in something and she fights for it tooth and nail, never giving up always moving forward. her courage and bravery were something any girl could look up to. you couldn't help but love her. Luke Skywalker, simply brilliant. this character was also so real. this young kid longing for the stars, for adventure, gets his whole world turned inside out and pulled out from under his feet. he's thrown into a tumble that spills him into a destiny he never knew existed for him. and he doesn't shy away from it, he embraces his role in the universe and becomes so talented, so powerful. we get to watch him grow, make mistakes and learn from them, fall in love and accept it wont/can't happen, make friends only to have to say goodbye, find a family only to lose part of it again. he's so amazing, you want to be him, to live his life. Darth Vader, the vilian we all hate until we see ROTJ and we know, we start to understand, and we pity him. So well done, he's menacing and terrifying, but he's redeemed. In ROTJ i love the end, the last words exchanged between father and son.. amazing.
Palpatine.. he was outstanding in this movie, you loathe him and wish you were there to remove his stain from the galaxy. but you want to cower from the power her holds. when he sits in his throne, i dont see him as feeble i see him as powerful and frightnening. even in a sitting position he is overwhelming and overpowering, you want to bend your will to him and give him your loyalty in the hopes he will leave you alone but you want to stand up, rise against and fight him down, make him leave his seat of evil.
The Rebel Alliance.. i love the rebel alliance. their fight for freedom, for peace, i wanted nothing more than to be a rebel; i wanted to take on the emporer and vader and helpd destroy their evil reign. Jabba the Hutt.. stunning, awesome, he was this vile creature, gangaster, thug, and you despised him. Yoda. i can't forget master yoda. this wise little creature, when yoda spoke you listened, he was so full of knowledge and power, i wanted to stand near him and soak up his presence in the force, to feel the strenth his aura must have glowed with. he was a phenomenal (Sp?) character, so well delivered. every character in the OT was well delivered, i wouldn't erase a single one of them. everyone from Luke Skywalker all the way down to OOla. you felt for every one of these characters, you connected with them and felt like you belonged among them. i'm definitely and OT girl.

However, I do still love the PT characters. especially by ROTS. I couldn't believe the emotional levels those characters were taken too. I was in tears through out that movie and i was so torn. with anakin i wanted so much to reach out to him to rip the darkness from him and hold him till the light side flowed freely through him, but at the same time i was angry with him. i found myself asking "WHY ANI!?!" and screaming "NO.. don't do it Ani, come back!" I was so heartbroken and torn when it came to him. Padme's character was pretty well done, most people i come in contact with don't care too much for her and believe a better actress could have been chosen to play her role but i think natalie portman did a really fine job as Padme. She pulled off queen of naboo, was a grand senator for her people, and was an amazing love to anakin. In AOTC before they are to be sacraficed, it just rips me to pieces when she admits her love to him. in ROTS she was also completely boosted to new levels. especially near the end. she was destroyed and broken, i felt her pain. Obi-wan.. amazing. "YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO DESTROY THE SITH, NOT JOIN THEM!" it sent shivers down my spine. he was wise but playful, loving but strong. i loved Obi-wan in ROTS. I loved all of the Jedi in ROTS. The betrayal.. ugh, it ate me up to watch them fall at the hands of those who were allies only seconds prior.

Wow. Somehow in my earlier post I forgot about Darth Vader. I should be force choked for my mistake. Anyway, Vader is another reason why the OT character's are better. Vader's probably the most famous character in SW and for good reason. Despite the fact that you never see his face until after he turns back, his chilling ruthlessness at the beginning of the OT and his conflicted thoughts at the end are still clear and believable.

Personally, I feel that Palpatine from the OT was much stronger character wise than in the PT. He was much more developed in the OT than in the PT.

For me, there's no contest: OT

Other than Obi-Wan, I either actively disliked or felt complete apathy towards every PT character who was in more than one of the films. I guess that's why ROTS isn't my favorite PT film - I just didn't feel a personal connection to the characters and utimately, didn't really care what happened to them.
