How are Droids named?
this has been an ache in my skull for about a week. Are they named via Manufacturer ?

All I know is the R units are astromech driods. And the first numbers R_ are the series, at least in the EU. I believe right now in post RotJ, they are up to R9s.

Droids are the same a machine parts, etc. They are named by the manufacturer in a way that allows for easy inventory. They aren't each given a specific sentimental name. Some beings might give their droid a nickname (i.e. Artoo and Threepio, etc.) that they specifically use as a sign of endearment. Names like R2-D2, C-3PO are just like serial numbers.
