Most fanfilms go with the PT style because its pretty much all you can do in digital rotoscoping--which might be why the PT itself ended up with lightsabers like this as well. You are just putting a digital glow overlay over the on-set stick. With the traditional way of hand rotoscoping its pretty much impossible to get straight lines the way the PT does, you inevitably end up with wobble or an eneven pulsing. So I'd say that theres a good chance that the aesthetic design of each trilogy is not necessarily intentional on the part of the VFX supervisor, its probably the unintentional result of the technology being used.

Revenge of the Sith. You can make some really awesome stuff with a good computer.

And I always thought it was hilarious when Obi-Wan's lightsabre went out in ANH. His expression was priceless.

I liked them best in ROTS more then any of the other movies. Thought TESB and AOTC was not bad.

ROTS. In a few instances, such as during the opening duel with Dooku, I felt they looked poor. Overall, they were the best in my opinion.

Empire, then Jedi, then ANH. I quite like them in PM too - but they;re just too slick CGI effect driven in AOTC and ROTS

There is just something alive about the blades in the OT - electrical, unstable, dangerous. Even the dodgy cut when Luke first switches the blade on - the actual quality of the light coming from the blade reminds me or ARC welding - hot, keep your hands away.... this is all re-enforced by the sound effect being better too. Generated in real time rather than using a sample bank.

I would have to say Revenge of the Sith, but, I don't think there is too much in difference in quality between the new trilogy and as much as I love the the original Star Wars, they are laughable in A New Hope compared to the more modern ones. laugh

I agree with this...

My favorite blades are the ones in AOTC...they kind of have a more consistent glow than TPM, and I really didn't like the pointed tips like in ROTS...
