Ultimately, they were far short of their potential.

I see them as one big film, so I don't divide them up regarding flaws, which one is the best or worst, etc. It's all Star Wars to me.

Ultimately, they were far short of their potential.

Yes, IF ONLY they had gotten close to their potential, it might have become a successful series of films that ended up creating fan websites, selling billions of dollars of merchandise, advancing special effects, and touching generations for decades. But it all fell flat and didn't work.

Great post applause , I can't stand it when others try to shove their view on the films and make people universally accept that view. Their is no right or wrong view DEAL WITH IT! In my view they are perfect, but that is just one humble fan's opinion!

Voted the third option, that one or two of the movies suck (Menace and Clones).

Really the thing is that I like aspects of the prequels (Natalie Portman's hotness mostly), but IMO for the most part they turned out kinda lame, because it's hard to get behind Anakin Skywalker as the hero of the series. Luke was also whiny, but he had plenty of redeeming qualities. I'm not sure what redeeming qualities Anakin was supposed to have, because when he wasn't whining he was arrogant and talked about how everyone needs to be forcefully made to agree, or he was trying to hook up with Padme with all the social grace of one of the stereotypical Star Wars fans from the Triumph skit.

Also, I'm baffled as to why George Lucas won't leave the movies alone, and why Star Wars fans actually want to see their favorite movies get the cinematic equivalent to cosmetic surgery. We loved the movies the way they were, special effects and continuity flaws and all (which weren't a problem before the prequels). Stuff like Han shooting first and splicing in Hayden Christensen are the first steps to making the Star Wars movies look like the cinematic equivalent to the cat lady in my opinion.

Although surprisingly, I still don't see what is so bad about the Ewoks. That's probably the one thing that I disagree with the "bashers" about.

Lots of "bashers" like the ewoks. I myself hate them and think they are far worse than gungans.

"Like them, but I have other favorites that are better."

All of these films have the same mindset by Lucas that leaves us with less than stellar dialogue, and kid friendly antics, therefore its humorous when people elevate the originals and curse the prequels. I call it a glass house.

Love em all, but there are some flaws. ANH and ESB are probably the only ones I wouldn't change anything about (from the OOT, ahem tongue ) but ROTS probably comes close... just a line here or there.

But honestly, even the things I know aren't perfect have never bothered me. I love them.

I agreed with the majority here. Of course I love them, but they obviously have some flaws. They could have been much, much better, IMO.

I went with Option 2; love them but have their flaws. Which is the highest praise I can give for a movie(s). I've yet to come across a perfect one.

There is much I adore about this series, but like other fans, I do wish Lucas hadn't backpedaled from the tonal/emotional framework of TESB. Now, I can understand why, in the four subsequent sequels, Lucas opted to graft the Flash Gordon razzle-dazzle of ANH with the operatic proceedings of Empire, but I don't think he successfully pulled it off until ROTS. Thus, I'm left to wonder what form this franchise would've taken, had the Lucas/Kershner/Kurtz/Kasdan collaboration remained intact--if only for one more installment.

For what it's worth, here's my breakdown:

One masterpiece (TESB)
Two great films (ROTS, ANH)
One underrated genre work (TPM)
One noble failure (AOTC)
One abject failure (ROTJ)
