He'd spend the rest of his life in prison. It doesn't matter if you repent, he killed children.

I'm pretty sure there are any number of post-ROTJ AU fanfics that attempt to answer this question. Look in 'Fanfic- Beyond the Saga' and you should have plenty of answers.

I posted this before and here it is again, as funny as ever:
See below
-------------------------------------------------------------
And what would Vader have done had he lived? It was the end of the movie
and the end of the trilogy.
Was he supposed to party with the Rebels on Endor or go back to, uh, go back to......,
uh, where would he have gone back to? He had nowhere to go and nothing to do. For all we know, he lived on a Star Destroyer. He had to sit in his meditation chamber to shave, shower, talk on his cell phone. He apparently didn't have a house or apartment anywhere on any planet. He didn't know his kids. He didn't have a woman. He didn't have any other kids by another woman.
Should Uncle George have let him live and hang out with Luke and Leia and were they to have designed a new, benevolent-looking suit for Vader different from his Sith Lord suit?
Then they all go to family therapy to resolve past issues such as child abandonment, for starters. Stuart Smalley from Saturday Night Live would be their therapist. And they all live happily ever after. Vader could've had a reality show like Hogan Knows Best, or Run's House. He may have written a book and been on the Oprah Winfrey Book Club thingy she has. Vader would be doing a book-signing tour. He'd be on The David Letterman show, he'd be a guest on the Dr Phil Show, and Jerry Springer would be calling him. The Food Network would want him to do a cooking show. Imagine Vader cooking a meal that he learned how to cook back on Tatooine when he was a kid. But then Dog The Bounty Hunter would be after him and soon after, he appears on Court TV. The possibilities are enormous. This is all EU stuff, but, still. Assuming all those tv show even exist in the Star Wars Galaxy.
Had Vader lived, anyone from Alderaan not on the planet when it was destroyed probably would've tried to kill Vader if they had the chance. Then Luke protects his father but Luke is a Jedi and in the Rebel Alliance and other members of the Alliance that want Vader dead are in a conflict with Luke, then another fight or war breaks out. That's another EU novel right there.
He was old and crippled and was struck with force-lightning. (Am I suppose to capitalize force?) Vader probably didn't even have any will to live anymore anyhow. He was a tragic character and him living would've made him really not a tragic character.
It was the end. Just think of the song The End by The Doors when you watch when Vader dies.

If Luke got his way: Anakin would become a leading member of the New Jedi Order.
If the Rebellion got their way: He'd probably be imprisoned for life.

Interesting question.
I think it would take a long time to decide Anakin's final status. On the one hand, he killed the Emperor and brought back democracy and peace. On the other, he was very high up in the Imperial military and involved in many of its operations. I think at the very least, if he truly and completely returned to the Light Side, he would be a great asset to the new Jedi order that Luke was establishing. After all, he would be the most senior surviving Jedi and would have valuable knowledge and experience. And the fact that he went to the Dark Side could also be to the advantage of the Jedi and the Republic. After Palpatine, the proper understanding of the Dark Side, of its nature and the threat that it poses, would be crucial.
He would be the only surviving Jedi with inside knowledge of all the Jedi traditions, institutions and methods, e.g. the Jedi council, the master/apprentice relationship and so on. He would also be uniquely placed to comment on the failings of these things. I think it's inevitable that Luke would press for him to have, at the least, a key advisory role in rebuilding the Jedi order and that he might even be on the Jedi Council. In fact, possibly, he could find himself as a Jedi Master at last. However, there would be a lot of "truth and reconciliation" to go through before that could happen.

Strange... The only personification of Anakin I've seen in the movies was present at the end of my ROTJ DVD.

I always thought that if Anakin survived then Luke would've just disappeared following the battle and plotted a course for Dagobah instead of rejoining the Rebels on Endor.

If Anakin survived, then all the EU media that takes place after ROTJ wouldn't exist.

^^^So very true.
Everything in the SW universe would be different. Leia would have a chance to really meet her father, Luke would have a Jedi Master who was actually alive (I mean master as in the teaching sense, not as in the rank), and the Empire would see the ultimate traitor in Vader and either follow him out of fear or fight the Rebellion harder because it took their two top ranking leaders.
I think, in regards to his treatment by the Rebellion, that had Anakin survived, the Rebellion would have been forgiving. They believed in the Jedi principals and understood the way of redemption. They might not have had enough money to create a new, less menacing suit for Vader, but that's a different story.

I like to think that Vader would probably allow himself to be tried and executed. If he was really ready to "face his sins", so to speak--quietly sneaking off into self-imposed exile is basically running away from responsibility and accountability, and the impression I got was that Vader was ready to finally face the music. Imprisonment would probably be politically unacceptable for the billions of citizens under the New Republic, and probably for the vast majority of the Rebels and those in power as well. Its doubtful they would even view his murder of the Emperor as heroic--rather, it would be seen as an attempted usurping, an internal power struggle between the two tyrants. I imagine the Rebels suspected that Vader might one day try to seize power himself--historically, war-lords and those with the military behind them are far better at uniting a force, rather than a king or emperor.
