[10th Anniversary] -- What's your JC/SWC Story?
|
As you guys can see, and most of you hopefully already know, we're celebrating ten years of the Jedi Council Forums! For some out there, it's been a much longer journey, and for a few out there, the journey is only now beginning. Still, we all have a story to share, and I thought we could build the community by sharing the stories of what brought, and kept, us here at boards.theforce.net through the years.
And I'll go first.
I registered here as DarthIntegral in 2005. But that wasn't my first trip to these hallowed grounds. I originally registered here way back in May of 1999 as "Son of Maul". Excited by the first couple of showings of The Phantom Menace, I wanted to chat with other folks who also enjoyed the movie, and my brother lead me here. I stayed for a bit, but I eventually decided that I wanted to be completely spoiler free and even trailer free for the other two prequels.
And this was because of one particular scene from TPM: in Theed palace, when Maul unveils the fact that his lightsaber is double bladed. It was a cool scene, but I thought it would have been a thousand times cooler if I hadn't known that was coming. But, alas, it had been featured in a trailer, and so I knew it was coming. So, I decided that I wanted to be as surprised as possible for the other two movies. And I did a decent job. The only "spoiler" I had going into Episode II was that Count Dooku was probably a Sith, because I saw a bag of Lays potato chips (on the day AotC opened ) with the character holding a red lightsaber. The only "spoiler" I had for Episode III was that it somehow involved Wookiees, because K-B Toys at the local mall had an advertisement for the "Star Wars Episode III: Attack of the Wookiees" game.
So, I was probably the biggest Star Wars geek in the planet that had no idea what was happening when I walked into the theater for the midnight showings. And that was cool with me.
After RotS was released, though, I was free to browse the internet for any and all Star Wars information, which of course lead me back to TheForce.net, which I remembered fondly. I lurked for quite a while, just gauging other reactions to a movie I love so dearly. Until something caught my attention so much that I had to register and stick around for a bit ... the Jedi Draft. And the community in that Draft that was having a great time. Users like Darth-Horax, Suzuki_Akira, Shadow_of_Durron, mr_sith, Corran10584, BBurditt, and many, many others. And so, the Jedi Draft sucked me back in.
And I went on to enjoy many other things around here that kept sucking me back in. The StarFighter Draft. The SWC Senate Game. The Role Playing Forum. Then, I was asked to moderate SWC, a forum I to this day love, because it helped draft me into the great community found at the JC. Then, of course, the Arena was created, and I had no need to ever leave the JC, except to make money, prepare food, and use the bathroom.
And here I remain, Manager of SWC and The Arena. All because the Jedi Draft sucked me back in, when I was looking for reactions to RotS between Grad School courses.
And I'm so glad it did.
So what's your JC/SWC story?

I was first directed to theforce.net by a review in the newspaper about one of the fanfilms. After a while of looking at those films, I noticed that there were forums on the site as well. Not knowing what I was getting into, I registered, and now look where I am, over 1,900 posts later. Right after that, I joined the NJT and opened the Underappreciated Jedi Fan Club, and later the SWC Rebel Alliance. Now, the SWC is one of my four (was five last week) favorite boards.

I am with you on being spoiler-free, Inty. The only things I knew about the PT were things I learned on accident and in the trailers (which I shouldn't have watched... I don't watch trailers anymore).
I think I came to SWC beginning in 2004. I was a regular player in the Starfighter Draft and then the Jedi Draft for a while, along with friends like burd, SecondBest, and Suz. I was the token girl After a while, it just became too difficult to commit that much time to the game so I stopped playing. I posted in the forum still for a while, kind of drifted around... this summer's been the first time I've started to post regularly again in SWC in a couple years, drawn back by Ghost Ship Executor. It's nice

I did not find the JC until I read Outbound Flight. I had a completely different idea of how that book should've been and was so disappointed when I read it. I was confused because of something else that I had read and thought the flight was something different. So I googled it and got the Lit thread. Read through it and had my questions answered and was intrigued that there were other people who read Star Wars. I hadn't known anyone else who did and it was awesome to be able to talk to others who experienced the universe. My lil' bro and I were huge SW movie fans, but I read the books and he wasn't much of a reader.
My first foray into the SWC was because of the hangman thread. I love the different games and funny threads about "You know you've watched SW too many times, etc". It was a good laugh reading through them. So I'm stuck here now and loving it. I enjoy sharing SW with people from around the world. I recently met up with people in Vegas and it was one of the coolest vacations ever. I can't wait to go to a Celebration.

Last December I was looking on youtube and found this video. It was a trailer for Crash featuring Jaina Solo (my favorite female character) and Jagged Fel (my favorite male character). So I started to read the story and loved it. I wanted to post a reply to the story so I got an account. Then I found other fanfics I liked and I found the Jagged Fel fan club and now I look and post on TFN every day. Then when the Civil War started, I started looking at other boards and stuff like that. (I have no idea why though). Then I found the SWC and I liked the topics they had so I posted.

I've always been a fan of Star Wars for as long as I remember since my parents exposed me to the original trilogy at a very early age. I can't remember when I first saw the movies, only that they were a very fond memory from my childhood. But it wasn't until the prequels that my love for SW reached an alltime high.
After I saw ROTS in theatres I was so eager to delve more into the SW universe that I read anything I could get my hands on. I first read the wonderful ROTS novelisation and then my best friend lent me her copies of the Jedi Apprentice novels. As Obi-Wan is my favorite character I loved the books and I decided to see if there was fanfiction involving him and Siri Tachi. Through a google search I found the fanfic forums.
I remember that I was a bit intimidated by the forums at first, but after a month I registered on August 17, 2005, just a week before my 21st Birthday. I soon became very familiar with the boards, and there has hardly been a day that I haven't logged in.

I registered here in Apr of 2006 (back then I only knew of the Lit thread). I made to posts in Lit and then didn't post for two months. In June I started posting regularly.

I registered here in January 2005 for the fanfiction. I got pulled into the regular boards by the a Jedi Trials Council Member, Heels. I was wicked noob back then and broke the rules lots. I got banned...well a lot because of it. I trained with some famous and not so famous padawans. Such as DarthKakarot, the now Darth_wanderguard, and a few others who have since left. I managed to talk myself into most of my ranks. I only did one padawan task. I eventually made Council Member after a big feud war with...well people who were here know who it was. I've trained a few padawans. The one who really made me proud is no longer here but she got to Master before leaving. Anyways, I've joined several organizations, have dabbled in the EUC and JC but never really gotten involved. I've been Speaker of the House, Vice Chancellor and Supreme Chancellor for the Galactic Senate. I left this forum and laid down my Councilship in late '06 but came back and got repromoted. I laid it down once again around the end of the normal Jedi Trials. And I planned never to return. Recently though I got drawn back in and have started training in the New Jedi Trials and have taken part in the EUC.
I think that's my story.

This is a great thread. I just want to say that.
I signed up after I picked up Inferno. Actually I first signed in as Darth Caedus which was not only the lamest name to take but it was a spoiler at the time so I was immediately banned after my first post. I left the boards for a couple of months and came back with my current silly name.
What got me hooked to the boards was the fact that I picked up my first Legacy Comic a year ago Friday. Since then I've been hanging around Lit trying to get noticed.
Seriously. I really used this account at first to know what to read and what not to read in the EU. Now my favorite thing is to give the same advice to other noobs.

I am not sure how I found the boards, probably by googling "Star Wars roleplaying", which is what I was interested in at the time...and still am.
My first name was Darth-Dispicable (registered on Dec '03), I was thinking of how daffy duck would say it and spelled it that way....though everyone thinks I can't spell because of it.
Right away I got into the EUC forum, and started a Sith fanclub (still suprised there wasn't one already). I did that for a few years, well into '06 or so, and then passed it along to others within the group.
Some of my most fun memories come from that group, as we all roleplayed together in the RPF and such. It was a great time indeed, and I still talk to most of them often.
Another fun memory for me (though not for the mods), was the Sith Trial wars against the Jedi Trials in this very forum. There was a lot of chaos, but also a lot of fun. Most of those people we used to e-kill as much as possible I now talk to, which is odd, back then I wasn't liked much by Jedi fans.
As with Inty, I am also a Draft junkie. I get into the Comic Draft in the Census and Games forum more than the Jedi draft though, but it is all the same really....and a lot of fun.

I remember the Jedi vs Sith Wars! The mods hated them but we loved them. And weren't you the one who yelled at Rebo and I for leading that bombing against the Sith, Dispicable? Those were good times. Though...you did try to capture me too much.

As a note, I'd love to hear from some "Oldbies" who used to post in SWC (or perhaps even SW Misc) and no longer do. I'd love to know what you used to love about the place, what we might bring back, and things of that nature.
Not to discount anyone else, because I love hearing each and every story. Just those in particular wouldn't be particularly helpful to horsey and I improving the forum!

I disagree Inty, a good Sith vs Jedi war may be chaotic....but it does bring some excitement to the table. I think it is time for round 2.

I believe you are correct. I satisfied my anger by e-killing as many of you as possible though, so we are even....for now.
Ahhh good times, how I miss those days.

Inty posted:

Damn right you mention the RPF. And that's pretty cool about being completely spoiler free. Looking back, I wish I had.
Anyway, I registered May 15th, 2004. I remember that day, I think I was searching for Star Wars Sith or something like that. I found the New Sith Order (one of the greatest threads in the history of the boards) and joined that right away. With a quick browse of the forums, I found the RPF. It was like heaven to me. I joined as many games as I could. At one point, I think i was in like 15 games at once. Regardless, many of them were dead and such, but I was in a lot. And I am glad I had because I hold that Forum accountable for the increase in my writing skills. I stick around there to this day because I know I still have a lot of room for improvement.
The SWC...plenty of fond memories here. I think this is my third active forum I have posted in. I initially posted in the game threads, especially the Hangman thread. I loved that thread. I even started one in the EUC which lasted for a little while but died out. I then got sucked into the Cloud City Cantina. I also joined a draft or two, but sucked at it.
Then, the Sith Trials was created. My third home on the boards (next to the RPF and NSO). It was started by Zedd-Vega and I quickly rose the ranks. I think I was the second Master promoted (behind Vassago IIRC). Eventually, Vassago took over with myself and Despised as the next in command. Then, the chaos that was the Sith and Jedi Trials war. Quite a mess, if I remember right. There were "kidnappings", attacks, and so much chaos that both threads were moved into the RPF. I was mad at first, but I think that was the best thing to ever happen to the group. It was just recently closed for good, three years later.
After a couple of years without a Sithly presence in the SWC, I thought it was enough. With Despised the head of the NSO in the EUC, Vassago the head of the ST in the RPF, I was left out there by myself. So, we collaborated and created the Acolytes of Darkness here in the SWC led by yours truly. It was pretty much based on what the ST use to be, but we stress more quality rather than quantity.
We just recently finished our first battle against the Jedi Trials...And let me tell you, it was a wooping. As always here within the SWC, the Sith prevailed and we were victorious with a 5-0 victory.
That's my story.
