Sey Edit: I've moved this here for a few days so the SWC can get to know one of their mods. It'll move to the EUC in a few days and then back to the JCC. happy

Now it's time to see if this one can jump through the hula hoops! Uh.... wait a minute.. not the image I'm looking for... stand on an upside down bucket and snatch peanuts? No... darnit... it's on the tip of my tongue... not eat the lion tamer? No, that's not it.

Oh well. I have failed in my quest to present to you a cute animal metaphor that lines up with sey's great love. sad

I present to you all the one and only, the amazing, s65horsey!

My dialogue is in italics, sey's is not.

I can reasonably guess about the "horsey" part of your username, but what's up with the "s"? the 65?

I made this name up when I was 13 or 14, it was my second internet name. South 65 was a country boy band that I was a fan of at the time of the name and we were all trying to show support for the guys by putting s65 in our names. Like you said, the horsey is the obvious part. South 65 is a road that goes into Nashville, where most of my horse friends and best friend currently reside so I keep this username for them now.

So where are you from?

I'm originally from Wisconsin. A small town near Kenosha. My family no longer lives there. My parents moved to California last year. My older brother attends University of Wisconsin and my younger brother is at a Med school in Ohio. From Wisconsin I went to Murray State University for my undergrad degree in AgBusiness. Rode on the equestrian team there and was Captain for 2 years. I went to Texas A&M for my Masters in AgEcon and a College Teaching certificate (12 credit hours of education classes). I also taught a summer class of Intro to Ag Econ at Texas A&M.

I'm currently in Colorado teaching Agbusiness/AgEcon at a junior college.

So let's talk about the hors- *cough* elephant in the room. When did it all begin? When did you start riding? Is there any one experience in your memory that you can pinpoint as the beginning of your love of horses?

I was 5 years old and my best friend at the time was a year older than me and had started riding. I wanted to do what she did in the worst way, but there are few trainers who will take someone that young. So I waited an entire year (longest year of my life!) until I was 6 and then had my first lesson.

It was a blizzard and my mom braved the storm to take me to ride because she didn't want to disappoint me. I rode a horse named Licorice and my legs didn't fall below the saddle. The horse pretty much just followed the one in front of it and I rode around with the biggest smile on my face (or so my mom says).

My parents though I'd grow out of it, but I was completely hooked and have ridden regularly since then. The longest break was when I was in grad school, I went about a year without being on horseback (that I just broke that streak last weekend).

So let me get this straight... did you ride Licorice in the blizzard or was this indoors? Are you still friends with that best friend? Does she still ride?

There was an indoor arena, so we were inside while a blizzard (Wisconsin style) was raging outside. I actually do not still speak with the best friend. Our families both moved (at the time we were going to the same school in Illinois). Then my family moved to Wisconsin and hers eventually moved to Minnesota which is when we lost contact. At the time of her move to MN, she was still riding and had 2 horses. This was when I was in 6th grade.

I've only ever had 1 horse that was completely mine. He was my pony for 10 years and lived at a barn directly across the road from my house so I could walk over to ride him. We have tons of photos and videos of us riding around in my backyard. I used to exercise the dog and the horse at the same time cuz Echo would follow us around the backyard. tongue I retired him at age 35, and only sat on him sometimes to walk around or let him graze on grass after that. He still lives at the barn (as far as I know) and is the pony of a (now) 3 year old granddaughter of the owner of the barn. Chester gets spoiled and loves her so it is a wonderful retirement for him.

I've had various other horses that were sort of mine. Bunny was a Murray State University horse that I took home for the summer to train to jump. Twinkletoes was a friend of mine's horse who she brought to college for me to ride and train. I had her for about a year. Awesome mare, not afraid of anything. Echo used to follow her around the backyard too. I'll provide some photos when I get back home (I can't access them from here).

Lisa is the love of my life and I miss her warm embrace as well as her
enchanting laughter oh so terribly . . . Still I trudge on and
continue to remind myself that, no matter what happens, she and I will
always have had Vegas!

Seriously though, she is a very affable and generous person, while
simultaneously very confident/assertive and I find that genuinely
admirable. happy (SERIOUSLY seriously though, she really is the love of
my life.)

~Zas

Who is the horse in this picture? Was this at an event or something?

That is Hans. He is a Norwegian Fjord. I leased him from a girl during my junior year of college. (Which means she owned him, but he was basically mine as I paid for his keep, fed him, cleaned his stall, and rode him.) He was one of the coolest horses I've ever had the pleasure of working with. Fiesty when you're in the saddle. If he wanted to run, you might as well just stop what you're doing and be a jockey for a few mins or you weren't going to get anything done. Probably the fastest I've ever gone on a horse was when I'd take him out on the trails and just let him run.

The picture was taken at one of the Murray State horse shows. He is an awesome jumper so that was during the jumping portion. I was a 'horse handler' and would hold him until a rider drew him to jump on and then it was my job to tell her how to ride him so she could go in the ring and jump a course.

The way IHSA (Intercollegiate horse show association) works is that you go to another university and ride their horses in the show. So most of the time you're drawing a horse you've never ridden and you go out and jump a course. You don't get a warm-up other than a circle before going to your first fence. Thinking back on it that sounds pretty crazy to do, but it was lots of fun.

He's a beautiful animal.

So have you ever been to one of the big shows? Like the Kentucky Derby? I'm thinking mainly of those Triple Crown places, though I can't think of their specific names at the moment. doh!

I have never competed in a big show such as Harrisburg, Washington DC, or any of the shows in Florida. My trainer used to take people and horses all over the country, but my parents never had the money to send me so I just stuck with local B or C shows. I competed in a few A shows that were in the Illinois area such as Barrington (which will host the Olympic Equestrian events if Chicago gets one of the Summer Games). Classification of shows goes A (or rated), B is less than A, C is less than B and anything lower than that is usually referred to as a schooling show.

Like I said above, horses are expensive and showing makes it even worse. So my parents were able to help with the local stuff, but we never had the money to do anything more than that (other than a few times just to get the experience of it).

The IHSA stuff is completely separate from the classes of shows I listed above.

I've been to horse races, but never the Derby. Some day I will go. I have been to the Kentucky Rolex (as a spectator) and it was amazing. The Rolex is designed the same way that what you see in the Olympics works. So it is a three day event: Dressage, Cross Country, and Show Jumping.

What is dressage?

Dressage is like dancing with a horse. You work at performing moves completely in balance and without it looking like a lot of effort on either the horses' or your part.

There is no one person that is a bigger pain in my ass, but I still love every moment of it. As much as she drives me crazy, there's no doubt in my mind that she is also the only person I'd be willing to deal with it for.

~TypoCelchu

Alright, let's move away from horses for a bit (we'll return later). Let's talk about Corran Horn and Cade Skywalker. What do you see in them? tongue

Corran Horn started off as a girl crush and it just never went away. The X-wing books were something I started reading a long time ago, I'm not sure on dates, but I was 12 or 13 maybe? After reading the first book, I completely fell 'in love' with Corran. I tend to do that when I read books, fall 'in love' with a character. I cheered when he ditched Bacta Bitch and went with Mirax, he was the hero half the time, but still followed orders from those he respected and I admired that. The lengths he went to find Mirax in I, Jedi, what he did for the Camassi after the Vong murdered him, almost every part of his story I love.

Cade...Cade is my bad boy crush. He's an ass, plain and simple and I love him for it. I kinda feel like Delilah half the time, where she just can't seem to tear herself away from him even though in the long run it would probably be better for her to do so. There's just something about him that draws her in and makes her keep coming back no matter what he does. I have that relationship with him as a reader to character. He could be the hero, I know he could, but he doesn't want to be. At least not yet. wink

Of course it does help that he has a nice ass.

Do you have a boyfriend?

I do not have a boyfriend. I put that part of my life on hold when I went to grad school. I decided to be focused on my career so I just kinda shut it off. Now that I'm getting settled into a job that will probably change a bit and I'll start thinking about that stuff again.

What do you look for in a man?

I look for Corran Horn in a man. tongue I dated a couple of military guys who were crew chiefs, so I tried that route and it didn't work out.

Ok, seriously, I want someone who makes me laugh. I love to laugh, it is one of my favorite things to do. I'm easily amused so this shouldn't be too difficult to find. I also need someone who is intelligent. Likes sports, I'm a huge Football fan (both college and NFL). Also has to be someone that will tolerate the horse and Star Wars obsession. I'm never going to stop reading the books, I enjoy them and I like reading. I'm also never going to give up horses. I don't need someone who rides, though that would be a plus, but at least someone who is going to support me and understand that I need to ride a horse regularly.

So, you're in Colorado now. Have you seen harpuah around? tongue

I have! She was so much fun despite her not getting a lot of sleep the night before. Her, Grimby, myself, and most of the RMFF went to see Clone Wars together the weekend before it opened. It was awesome!

Lisa is soft and cuddly. I still miss her hugs from Vegas and it's not fair that Zas got more of her then I. sad

~Healer_Leona

You've moved around a lot, it looks like. What's the one place that sticks with you the most?

Hmm...Each place has something special about it I'd say.

Wisconsin - I will always consider my home. I grew up there and loved every minute of it. The only reason I left for college was because there was no equestrian team at any of the schools in Wisconsin.

Kentucky - my home away from home (also Nashville too, I spent quite a bit of time there during my college years as it isn't far from where I went to school). KY is people to me I guess. All of my favorite non-family people are in or around the KY/TN area.

Texas - I was actually quite depressed most of my time in Texas. I wasn't on the right path for my life and struggling to write a thesis about a topic I didn't care about. Wasted about a year and a half being depressed with my situation before someone was able to pull me out of it and I got on the right track which is teaching. I will miss Texas A&M though. I love the Aggies, I will always bleed maroon.

Colorado - I haven't been here that long yet, but I love being a part of the RMFF and thank Grimby for dragging me along and making me feel at home here.

Hmm, well, let's get your opinion of the Clone Wars movie. mischief

I loved it! I think my favorite parts were the droid humor parts and they were so cheesy, but right up my alley. I was expecting a lot worse, I think, but it was still Star Wars to me. Some of the voices were better and some were worse. I wasn't too pleased with Obi-wan's voice, but Anakin's was better for the most part.

Plus, I like the idea behind Anakin having an apprentice.

Now what is your favorite Star Wars movie? Least favorite? why?

Return of the Jedi is my favorite of the OT, however when Revenge of the Sith came out it became my favorite. I love how they connect so much of Star Wars with it.

Attack of the Clones is my least favorite. I can't stand Hayden in that movie, he is way WAY better in RotS.

What is your opinion on ewoks?

I love ewoks. They're cute, cuddley, and deadly with sticks and rocks. One of the first threads I posted regularly in was the Wes Janson Fan Club. Yub Yub!

What creature in the SWU do you think would most ride like a horse?

I can't believe I'm going to reference Lusa in this interview, but she's a Chironian, which is basically a Centaur. So they'd probably ride most like a horse because they are half horse. tongue

Ah, but the question is (and forgive me, I haven't read EU)... would this Lusa tolerate someone riding her? tongue

I'm pretty sure Reynar did in one of the books. Possibly the Solo kids too.

So, getting back to horses... has there ever been one that just didn't want to let you on him/her? On the flip side, are there horses that you immediately connect with on some deep level?

As far as a horse that didn't want to be ridden, there was one. His name was CC (which stood for Carbon Copy), though he was nothing like his daddy. The horse was raised kind of as a puppy and it ruined him. So when we started riding him, he'd be good somedays, and completely crazy others. He tried to lay down on me while I was riding him once. After that I was like, I'm done. That's not worth my time.

I connected fairly quickly with Bunny. I think it helped that I brought her home for the summer so there wasn't anyone else riding her. She was the kind of horse that would do anything you asked, but you had to trust her. It is difficult to completely give over your trust to a horse, especially when training her to jump, but if she felt you didn't trust her she wasn't going over the fence. She'd jump anything with me on her back and others would get on, who are far better riders than I am, couldn't get her to do anything.

The pony I'm currently taking lessons on and I have reached an understanding fairly quickly as well. We've had two lessons and doing wonderfully together, surprising the trainer quite a bit because some of the stuff we're doing he doesn't know how to do, but we're getting it.

"He tried to lay down on me while I was riding him once."

How does that happen? tongue

He put his head down, went to his knees in the front, I bailed off to the side and he laid down.

Do you want to own a stables someday?

Not sure. I want to have a few horses. Where I live now it would be easier to get some land, put up a barn, and take care of my own horses. So I might do that. As far as running an operation, probably not.

Without adding their names, I want you to identify the defining characteristics of some horses in your life.

Mischievous

Loving

Spooky

Bitchy

Sweetheart

And now, pair them up with JCers.

Mischievous - Darth_Integral

Loving - Sinrebirth

Spooky - Eeth

Bitchy - Umm, I'd have to edit myself.

Sweetheart - Zas

have there ever been accidents?

Riders die too, but usually survive with multiple injuries. My worst fall happened a few years ago. We had a horse who had thrown a few people at the barn and my friend and I were trying to figure him out. I was jumping him and things were going well. Aimed him at the next jump, felt him gather himself to take-off, and then he slammed on the breaks and I kept going. Soared over his head and the jump and landed on a pole on the ground. Had a 7 inch bruise, screwed up my back pretty badly, physical therapy, chiropractors, etc. It still acts up a bit now, but I think the 2 years I took off from riding helped me heal a bit.

If the Eastern idea of reincarnation were true, would you mind coming back as your favorite animal? If you did, what would your coat be like? Your personality? Your skills?

I'm not sure. Most of the time I think I'd just want to be dead. If I could guarantee to get into a good lesson barn and be one of the types of horses who takes care of little kids as they learn to ride, then I'd go for that. I'd be a sweet, dark bay mare most of the time, but probably get a little moody if I were sore. I'd be able to jump, too.

s65horsey - Sey to almost everyone who knows her - is possibly the most bubbly poster I have ever met. Her personality has seen her achieve a great deal in a small time in the EUC, JCC and SWC, and I would rank her among the most liked members of the boards, and a personal and reliable friend to many.

~Sinrebirth

What do you do for a living?

I teach at a junior college. I am an assistant professor of Agriculture Economics and Agriculture Business. This means I teach AgEcon classes, a Farm and Ranch management class, Ag Finance, and a Career Math class.

So what spurned your interest in agriculture?

I've always been interested in horses, obviously, so when I went to Murray State and spoke with the head of the Ag department to learn about their equestrian team, he talked me out of international business and into AgBusiness. The Equine Industry is part of Ag business, so it seemed to fit. I fell in love with the economics part of it and went on to get a Masters degree in AgEcon.

Ag is always interesting because it never stays the same. If you travel around you have to learn about different crops in order to teach. In KY, I learned about tobacco growing, in TX, I learned about cotton, and in CO, I'm learning about sugar beets and sun flowers.

So, what do you make of all this genetic engineering business? Organic vs. artificial? Is this the future or not?

Genetic engineering for foods in the present. Most of the seeds farmers are putting in the ground is already engineered to be pest resistant. I welcome these types of crop engineering. One of the companies is piloting a drought resistant brand of corn, I believe, and that will help farmers here in CO tremendously because there isn't enough water around, as well as other countries who don't have the resources that we tend to have in the US.

Organic foods are a farce, for the most part. It is such a small percentage that needs to be organic in order to have the organic label that it is really misleading to consumers. It is a niche market though and some people will pay more for it, so kudos to the farmers that are in there. More money.

So all those dietary books and fitness freaks that say that organic food is healthier are full of baloney?

I'm not a health nut, but probably.

So you're a teacher. You've been a student all the way up through grad school. Now you're starting to experience the flip side of the same coin. Can you see, yet, why some teachers fall in love with this profession?

I fell in love with this profession while I was at Texas A&M. I had a student who was ex-army and had a learning disability where he couldn't concentrate very well to study. He practically lived in my office to pass the class because he couldn't get on the medicine that he needed until the next month. This was a summer class so by then it would be over. He went from a forty something on the first exam to an A on the final because of the work I put in to help teach him outside of class. I came up with the most bizarre things to relate economics to in order to get him to remember the formulas.

"I came up with the most bizarre things to relate economics to in order to get him to remember the formulas."

Example(s)? tongue

Man, this was a few years ago so I'm not entirely sure if I remember them, but one had to do with a Humvee (I was attempting to relate things to the army cuz that was what he knew the most about) and it was something to do with Hamburgers over another product and the marginal rate of substitution.

What grade did he end up with all said and done? Does he know he was kind of there at the nativity of your love for teaching?

I think he ended up with an A in the class. I don't remember. There were extra credit options so he could make up a lot of points. I wasn't the actual teacher at that point, just a teaching assistant, but the prof didn't do much teaching so I did a most of it anyways. He probably has no idea that he was there for the start of my love for teaching.

what is your favorite book? Who is your favorite author?

It is hard for me to pick a favorite book so I'm going to list some series that I like.

Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp series

Brad Thor's Scott Harvath series

Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter (Books 1-8, anything after 8 is porn on paper).

The Black Stallion Series (kids books)

The Thoroughbred Books (kids books)

Harry Potter

Dresden Files

If I absolutely had to pick one I'll pick the first Thoroughbred book: A Horse Called Wonder.

Joanna Campbell is the author of most of that series and one of my favorite non-scifi/fantasy authors along with Walter Farley.

And... which is your favorite EU book? Who is your favorite EU author?

As far as the EU goes, Starfighters of Adumar is my favorite book. It is the last book of the X-wing series. Shockingly Corran Horn isn't in that book, but as a close second I, Jedi is a book solely about Corran. I tend to go back and forth on which is my fav. So Aaron Allston and Michael Stackpole tend to flip flop as my fav SW authors, usually Stackpole wins because he created Corran. tongue

When she first joined, I don't think either of us really understood each other because we saw the boards in completely different ways. Although it took a while for us to get along, we've made a fantastic team in EUC and I don't think I could ask for a better colleague. We see completely eye to eye on most issues and always touch base about important things, which highlights an important trait of hers: she's a team player and always keeps other people's feelings and thoughts in mind.

~GrandAdmiralJello

So, let's talk about Vegas. You and several JCers met up (remind us who showed up) for some amount of days. Anything... scandalous... go on? What was the undisputed high point of the trip?

I'm pretty sure Tim and David snuggled in bed. I snuggled a lot with Zas and Frieda. Carmen made fun of all of us. We attempted to get Jello drunk, but instead I just got him to like the same kind of wine that I like (Riesling). Of course there are the bathtub videos. I was told THE suite party was more scandalous than the infamous pod party.

The high point for me was probably standing on top of the Eiffel Tower on our last night together watching the Bellagio Fountains go off surrounded by people that I had so much fun with and knew I was going to miss a lot.

I am a big ignoramus and do not know what happened at the pod party. blush

Its pretty hush hush. I don't either. I was just repeating what someone told me.

If you were a superhero... cape or no cape?

Definitely a cape. It would have to be one that lit up too and probably flashed colors or sparkled.

Ectomobile (Ghostbusters), DeLorean Time Machine, or KITT (Knight Rider Firebird). Pick one.

None. It is a batmobile or nothing at all.

If you were faced with the terrible task of invading Russia in the winter, what ten JCers would you put in charge of different aspects of the invasion?

Grimby would be in charge of the drinks. He makes an excellent celebration drink.

TypoCelchu would be in charge of tactics. That guy is insane with his strategic thinking. Plus, he is a history major so I think he'd know a bit about Russia and past wars.

Frieda and Zas get to be in charge of keeping everyone warm.

GrandAdmiralJello knows quite a bit about medical stuff (or will) so he can be our doctor.

Souderwan is in the navy so he can be in charge of getting us military supplies and seeing that they get used properly.

ASO (Dani) gets to be the diplomatic person/lawyer who is attempting to get Russia to surrender while we invade.

dp4m is incharge of financing the whole ordeal.

Eeth would be in charge of the war propaganda to hand out to the Russian citizens so they will join our side.

PrincessKenobi gets to come along so I have someone to talk about the Colts with, since it appears the rest of the people have the basics covered. tongue

And another interview come and gone already! Good luck with the horses, the teaching, and the search for Corran, Lisa. wink

For Issue XXXV, I am interviewing a... rather unusual choice.

Errant_Venure!

I know this is kind of like People magazine interviewing Shirley Temple for no apparent reason, but Evey has promised to answer any and all questions I throw at him. And after seeing his response to my first question ("What crazy crap have you seen lately?"), I was sold. I present to you the first half of his answer:

I've seen some crazy stuff since I've been here and its only been nearly two weeks now, nothing gruesome in the sense of injuries and wounds, etc, but strange nevertheless. My career field is that of a Cop, but in reality we provide not only law enforcement duties but also security on and off base, entry control, detainee operations (Prisoner of War guards 'corrections officers') and combat infantry all the way from classic ground warfare to urban enviroments and convoy operations to include 50 caliber machine guns, mark 19 grenade launchers, missle launchers and the like. My mission is to work the entry control gates for Joint Base Balad which means we are at risk of sucide bombers and cars rolling up to the gates and going boom.

Plus, he's that BSG kid, so you know, there will be plenty of Battlestar Galactica talk in the next issue.

See you later,

~Coruscant
