Isaac Asimov
This thread is for discussion on the author, Isaac Asimov.
Isaac Asimov was born in the Soviet Union and later moved to New York with his parents. He went to college and majored in Chemistry and other sciences.
Asimov wrote many works of non-fiction but he is most famous for his fiction. Some of his works include
This is some of his writings (In chronological order according to his universe)
I, Robot (a collection of short strories)
The Caves of Steel (A SF Detective story about Detective Elijah Baley and his robotic partner.)
The Naked Sun (Book Two of the robot series, with Elijah Baley and his robotic partner R. Daneel Olivaw)
The Robot's of Dawn (Book three of the Robot Series)
Robots and Empire (the final book of the Robot Series)
Prelude to Foundation
Forward the Foundation
Foundation
Foundation and Empire
Second Foundation
Foundation's Edge
Foundation and Earth
Other works not included in my chronological list are
Nightfall
Nemisis
The Fantastic Journey
I, Asimov
Gold
The God's Themselves
amoung others.
I am a huge fan of Asimov! I discovered his works in April of 03. Ever since that time I have been reading his works. No other writer comes close to his genius, in my opinion.
So let us discuss Isaac Asimov and his writing.

I never would have guessed you were a fan.
I read Foundation a couple years ago, and again more recently. That book has really shaped how I see most things, like fate. Excellent book.
I, Robot is another favorite of mine. I must have read it a dozen times, and those stories are still as good as they were the first time.
Asimovs, the magazine that he started, is also an excellent source of science fiction.

RE: Isaac Asimov
Asimov rocks!
The Foundation series is one of my all-time favorites, not for the writing or pacing (which, admittedly, can dip into the dull end of the spectrum), but for the ideas. Reading his later books that flesh out the character of Hari Seldon has made me cherish the man as much as you must to have taken his name for your own, Darth Seldon. R. Daneel Olivaw and Seldon's 'wife', the Tiger Lady, and Raych and Wanda, are also absolutely priceless characters. I do like how his robot universe, with the Spacer worlds, is connected to the Foundation Universe.
I've also read a good number of his short stories, which I very much enjoyed. The one (If you know which one I'm talking about) where the robot has the absolute, overriding need to write and manipulates his owner into upgrading him multiple times to make that possible is classic.
Sci-Fi Grandmaster, Originator of the Three Laws of Robotics, and INCREDIBLY prolific non-fiction writer as well. If you hadn't heard it when I said it at the beginning, my position is squarely that Asimov totally rocks.

Yes I enjoyed The Prequels (Prelude to Founation and Forward the Foundation also) they were my personal favorites. I loved the Spacer vs. Settler and Earth conflict of the Robot Series.
Psychohistory and The Three Laws of Robotics are both amazing!

Seldon, what did you think of that discussion between cyber Voltaire and Joan of Arc? I can't remember which book it was in.

I would start off with "Robot Visions", a collection of many of his short stories.
I personally love his work. I haven't read everything he's ever written, but his world is like no other -- a world full of robots and techonology -- he loved robots more than anybody and gave them life.
Man, read his stuff. You'll love it.

RE: Isaac Asimov
Well I read Prelude to Foundation first. I read all of the foundation books and then I went back to read I, Robot and the rest of the robot series.
I,Robot or Robot Visions
THe Caves of Steel
THe Naked Sun
The Robot's of Dawn
Robots and Empire (out of print)
Prelude to Foundation
Forward the Foundation
Foundation
Foundation and Empire
Second Foundation
Foundation's Edge
Foundation and Earth (out of print)
That is the great series in chronological order. In that big series I gave you there are really two separate series. You could read Foundation Series first or you could read Robot Series first. The Robot books come first chronologically. They are all amazing reads. I was able to find the two out of print books at a used book store.

I read the Foundation series and enjoyed it, most notably Prelude to Foundation, Foundation's Edge and Forward the Foundation.
Anyone think that the movie adaptation of I, Robot will be any good ? I have my reservations...

For some reason I am not looking forward to the I, Robot film. I hope I'm wrong.
Most of the Asimov books I have read are his science books and articles, he has been called "The Great Explainer".

I have mine too.
But I am glad that Hollywood is realizing his great works now. Wasn't a big fan of Bicentennial Man (the movie version).

Besides the fact that Susan Calvin is a character in both, that is pretty much the similarity between the two from what I have heard. I heard it is Will Smith along with Susan Calvin on a mystery. They investigate the first murder by a robot.
I fear this movie. But I'm glad it will bring Asimov back in the spotlight.
There is also news of a Foundation Movie.
And then a Second Foundation Movie. From what I heard half of Foundation and Empire will be in the first movie and the second part will be in the second film.
But that is 500 years of history in two foundation films. I doubt the films will be any good.

So I,Robot is just a bunch of his short stories?
What type of Sci-Fi does he write. Is he more of the moralistic sci-fi, twists and turns, or crazy sci-fi? Does that make sense
