RE: What was the last movie you saw?

Last few I saw:
The Other Boleyn Girl -- Not sexy, not clever, not fun. Mostly dull and stupid. Eric Bana is wasted. Portman and Johansson seem determined to demonstrate just how overrated they are. This movie has very little going for it. A great disappointment. (**)
The Signal -- This is that movie in which each act is tackled by a different director. The first act has some truly horrifying bits. The second shifts into an absurdist dark comedy. Both are fine. The third, unfortunately, is very weak and brings the film to an unsatisfying close. The inconsistencies regarding the signal's effect on people I can overlook in the interest of seeing three directors tackle similar subject matter. To be honest I really enjoyed the first couple acts. They were shocking, gruesome, hilarious. But it really did fall apart in the third act and what could have been a worthy horror film . . . wasn't. (****½ for the first two acts; *** overall)
Storytelling -- Still haven't quite decided what I think about this one yet.
The Kite Runner -- One of those PG-13 atrocity movies. I really like Marc Forster. I really enjoyed the childhood scenes here, despite the strangely sophisticated dialogue for such young children. The kite scenes were pretty awesome. Amir as an adult was played so dully, though, that it was hard to maintain interest in the movie. He's an avoidant, self-centered man-child, fine. I'm okay with a characters that I don't like, and characters growing up, and all that -- but the actor just can't act. This is a story that could have been powerful but, lacking a powerful lead performance and limited to a PG-13 version of history instead just kind of goes on.
The Incredible Hulk -- A solid action film. I've shared my thoughts elsewhere, so won't bother with much of a capsule review here. (***½)
Love and Other Disasters -- This is an annoying, pretentious movie that actually has some good moments. Brittany Murphy is a classic "butterface" -- even though she's nowhere near my type, I'm always surprised to find her charming, appealing and sexy, but there's something about her face that turns me off. Can't quite put a finger on it. It was incredibly annoying how because she couldn't quite manage an English accent they explained over and over again that she's "technically American, etc etc". Almost all the men in this movie do a great job. Almost every scene with Catherine Tate or her mother is a horrible misstep. The movie's central misunderstanding is amusing but goes on far too long. The movie ultimately embraces every cliché it sets out to skewer. There's a lot to enjoy here, but just as much to loathe. (**½)
Be Kind Rewind -- A delightful, whimsical little movie that missteps just a bit too often. I love Michel Gondry but think he'll probably usually do better adapting other peoples' scripts rather than his own. I'd say definitely give this one a try (unless you're a bitter cynic who hates life), but don't get your hopes too high. (***½)
Definitely, Maybe -- The previews for this one looked amusing, but it was dreadfully dull. Gosling had no chemistry with either Banks or Weisz (the movie didn't favor them either -- I normally find both of them attractive and in this case neither of them), so the love arcs didn't really work. Isla Fisher was cute. The little girl was cute, but was exceptionally annoying in that every time she showed up onscreen it was simply to tell us what we'd just seen moments before. Gosling's character was an idiot. (**)
10,000 BC -- Crap. Didn't this movie have a big budget? Where did it go? Decent but not great creature effects. Dull action. Terrible acting with laughable dialogue and most of the characters badly miscast. Boring locations. Clichés and nonsense abound. A mostly bland, derivative score. One of the worst voiceover narrations ever. (*)
27 Dresses -- Not great, but it seemed wonderful after the previous 2. Katherine Heigl is appealing as ever. Judy Greer is fun but underused. James Marsden is cute if slightly annoying. Malin Akerman is the weak link, but I couldn't tell if that's because she's an annoying actress, or because she was written as a walking cliché, or a little of both. Everything was tied up a bit too neatly and quickly at the end, but as these things go it wasn't bad. (***)
The Spiderwick Chronicles -- Surprisingly good. Like last year's Bridge to Terabithia, this was a competently put-together film with fine child acting and plenty of fun and tension and earned emotion and far more worth your time than most of the adventures being geared toward the adult market. (Special effects that serve the story instead of attempting to replace it?! Go figure. . .) Plus a fine James Horner score that only veers into blatant self-plagiarism very occasionally but is mostly fresh. (****)
1408 -- Not a fan of John Cusack, but this movie was, mostly, surprisingly effective. The question was: can one actor stuck in one hotel room for an hour maintain interest. The answer, surprisingly, is yes, with relatively few moments of unintentional hilarity. I've only seen the unrated version with its alternate ending, so I'm going to reserve final judgment until I've seen the theatrical ending.

The most recent ones I watched for the first time were The Guardian, Boy on a Dolphin, and The Fall of the Roman Empire. Since then I've watched The Mask of Zorro, which I had already seen.

Me again. Most recent one I watched for the first time was Awake, followed by re-watching In Good Company.

I tried to watch Wild Hogs last weekend, but turned it off after about 20 minutes. I don't really like any of the actors in it, and they all seemed like they were out of their prime. I've had the itch for Jurassic Park over the last week. I tried to watch my VHS copy of it, but it refused to cooperate. So I got it on DVD today, and watched it tonight. I still enjoyed it - not as good as the book, but still very good. I was pleasantly surprised by the dinosaurs. They didn't look too bad, especially since the movie is from 1993.

Jumper
Entertaining. Light on plot. Light on character exposition. Heavy on hot female lead. Interesting concept.
Overall, a nice movie to watch on a pleasant summer evening once the kid went to bed.

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox story. I refused to see this film for the longest time and my friend told me how awesome it was. I loved it and was pleasantly surprised.

Anastasia. It is probably one of my favorite non-Disney animated movies.

LIVING IN OBLIVION with Steve Buscemi. Frightfully funny, scarily accurate.
If you love indie films, don't miss this.

Dr. No - Finally saw the first James Bond film. I'm exceedingly poorly versed in Bond pre-Brosnan and wanted to rectify that, so thought I'd start at the beginning. The chase effects and arachnid threat and the "dragon" are primitive by modern standards, but the tension and thrill exceed most anything I'm likely to see in theatres these days. (****)
"Californication" - Season 1 - A series that unfortunately indulges in the cliché of the eccentric writer, witty and charming and obnoxious and irresistible to women (this cliché generally being promulgated by writers, naturally), but David Duchovny in the lead, as a writer who hasn't written in years but whose latest novel inspired a hit Hollywood POS movie, pulls it off brilliantly and is surrounded by a fine supporting cast. The weak link is Natascha McElhone as his ex and the mother of his daughter, who should be the most attractive woman in the show but in fact has less chemistry with Duchovny than anyone else and also looks awful. Eat a sandwich, lady. Nonetheless, this is a frequently hilarious, disgusting, unnerving show that I definitely recommend, despite the implausibility of its lead character (how does he maintain his lifestyle again?). (****)
Get Smart - I don't get the negative reviews here - I had more fun at this than at most movies I've seen recently. It gets off on the wrong foot, but about fifteen minutes in finds itself and is funny the rest of the way. Anne Hathaway is gorgeous, Steve Carell is Steve Carell, deadpanning with the best of them, but is actually halfway competent, a good marksman and useful in a fight, in a change of pace for this kind of film. Lots of fun. (****)
Charlie Bartlett -
Grosse Pointe Blank -
Capsule reviews of those last two coming later. Must leave computer for now.

Saw Get Smart tonight. Funniest movie I've seen in a long time. It was great to see a comedy for once that could base the majority it's jokes around something other than constant cussing and innuendos (that gets old and tired after awhile).
