"Human Desire" (1954) dir. by Fritz Lang, starring Glenn Ford, Gloria Grahame, and Broderick Crawford

A remake of Renoir's "La Bete Humaine" (1938), which I haven't seen.

Columbia wanted to reunite the leads from "The Big Heat" (1953) with that film's director. "Human Desire" was a flop at the box office, and I can see why.

This is an attempt at noir, but Grahame is very ill-suited to femme fatality. I simply didn't believe her as one, and the dialogue that tries to convince us of it falls flat. She projects warmth and sexuality, but not calculation; I felt much more sympathy for her than I suspect I was supposed to. Remember, in "The Big Heat", she was a moll, and that's a far more convincing role for her. Ford, in the chump role here, is also very uncomfortable, and they don't seem to have much chemistry. Crawford is Grahame's jealous husband, who has involved her in a murder. The denouement, which the audience is supposed to cheer, thus is horrifying.

The film's well-made, and is better than the pedestrian "The Blue Gardenia", but it's miscalculated from the get-go. The setting, which would make sense in the Depression, seems odd, but Lang does love those engines.

I have been trying to catch up with some new-to-video releases.

The last movie I watched was Crossing Over with Harrison Ford - it's the one that went quickly in and out of theaters about three months ago. Although he's portrayed fairly prominently in the DVD artwork, it's really more of an ensemble piece overall, also starring Ashley Judd and Ray Liotta. To me, it seemed to be awfully slow. The overall structure of the movie is similar to Crash, but the way all the characters' lives overlap seems to really strain one's suspension of disbelief.

I'd still recommend it to Ford fans, though. happy

Marty -- Delbert Mann, 1955 -- "Ma, sooner or later, there comes a point in a man's life when he's gotta face some facts. And one fact I gotta face is that, whatever it is that women like, I ain't got it." Great movie. Definitely a product of its time, but a great movie. (****½)

I like how the mother is in her 50's and she's portrayed as reallly old. My parents are the same age and well let's just say that 50's back then is nothing like 50's now.

Zodiac – I was a bit wary to watch this at first given that I didn't really feel up for a three hour movie the night I watched it. It took me about ten minutes to become entirely immersed in the film. This is a perfect example of a film that paradoxically manages to create incredibly well-rendered characters despite that I'd definitely say it's designed as a "plot film" rather than a "character film." Gyllenhaal and Downey Jr. both excelled at portraying two people whose respective reactions to the Zodiac murder investigations led to surprising paths on a personal level (I thought it was particularly interesting how the Gyllenhaal character's unhealthy obsession with the murders led to his eventual sanity, while the Downey Jr. character and his running away from the case led to his psychological downfall). Even the murder victims who were only granted a minimum of screen time seem like authentic people you can sympathize with while simultaneously finding fault in, partly because the depicted violence is unsettling in a realistic manner, and partly because Fincher managed to simply get that much out of the writing and the acting during limited screen time. The young blond woman (fantastic actress, whoever she is) at the very beginning of the film is a perfect example of this. From about a few minutes of screen time you find out she's married, cheating, running from someone, oddly laid back and uncaring, and at the end terrified yet hardly surprised concerning her fate. She's the type of enigmatic character that could carry an entire film, and I think that when the same thing can be said for multiple characters in the film then you know you've found something that's quality.

American Graffiti – after watching this for a second time I have to admit that, as big as a Star Wars fan as I am, it's hard not view this as the Lucas masterpiece. A perfect example of a fun nostalgia piece that's underlined with just enough of an edge to ensure that the experience is something more than simple fun. For example, I love the manner in which the theme of post-adolescent stagnation can be embedded in something as obviously goofy as Terry the Toad's nerdish bumbling. During one scene this character attempts to get the girl by dropping the name of the local going-nowhere-king-of-the-streets John Milner. The girl's response when asked if she knows this local "legend"? A simple "no," thus supporting the commentary exemplified by the Milner character's self-acknowledgment that his time is quickly passing him by. My only regret concerning this film is that I waited so long to finally watch it after thinking that nothing could possibly rival what Lucas did with Star Wars. I was wrong.

More American Graffiti – not as bad as I was expecting after reading some reviews, although admittedly a very flawed film when compared to the brilliance of the original. The experimental nature of the fragmented narrative style and the different aspect ratios to go along with the respective story lines gave this film points for uniqueness, yet ultimately this film suffers from not finding the same atmospheric focus of the first. Where AG succeeded in adding just a hint of edge to a singular picture of American nostalgia, MAG instead blatantly skips through a variety of 60s-era topics of social strife in a manner that feels falsely light-hearted. I think the whole point of American Graffiti was that the time for getting out of jams the quick, easy, and fun way had come to an end, and thus More American Graffiti mostly feels like a false extension of the first film even though I admit that catching up with the reappearing characters does hold some appeal.

Gran Torino – Not sure what to make of this one. In some scenes I felt that Eastwood was having fun taking the gnarled tough old guy persona to borderline levels of parody, scenes which in turn clashed with others that took an ultra serious tone after depicting brutal results of violence. And while I always appreciate the simplicity of Eastwood's compositions, there were definitely times in this one where the honesty of the moment was compromised thanks to the heavy-handed nature of the writing and directing. It was a bit hard buy into the Eastwood character's family, for instance, as the manners in which they break etiquette go so far beyond a failure of common sense that the characters come across more as absurdly stupid than emotionally callous. Similarly, while I did appreciate the slight twist of Eastwood only firing a weapon once throughout the film (an accidental shot at that), a lot of the development of the gang plot that led to the final confrontation seemed to alternate between a caricature and a retread when it came to offering a cinematic version of "life on the streets." Overall I'd say this is worth watching, but I didn't think it worked nearly as well as recent Eastwood efforts like Million Dollar Baby and Letters From Iwo Jima.

UP was the last one I saw in the theatre and I really loved that. And on dvd, I last watched Lemming, which wasn't satisfying on a lot of levels, but it had a few bizarre concepts that were interesting.

Waking Ned - it's a wonderful example of the lowkey comedy that the British are so good in making, combine it with Irish humor and it's just a great film. Definitely worth seeing, and it's James Nesbitt's breakthrough as well.
