A Bridge Too Far

Quite deserving of it's own picture because it is brilliant!

Truly one of the best War movies I have ever seen.

The International -- Tom Tykwer, 2009 -- I rather like Clive Owen, and this movie had some pretty impressive set pieces and flashes of Tykwer's style that make it worth seeing, but it's also rather boring and forgettable. (***)

The Rocketeer -- Joe Johnston, 1991 -- Fun adventure with excellent Horner score. The opening, with its wide-eyed sense of wonder, is much better than the action set-piece ending. Bill Campbell certainly looks his part, with corn-fed strong-jawed good looks, and Jennifer Connelly is suitably doe-eyed and wonderfully pneumatic, but they're both unfortunately rather boring. Which is besides the point, because the real star of this thing is the jetpack, which delivers. Timothy Dalton's also fun until he goes all Nazi at the end. Anyway. A simple comic-book adventure from the days when they didn't have to be more than some light escapist fun. Fun stuff. (****)

Up -- Pete Docter with Bob Peterson, 2009 -- I was a little skeptical going in after being burned on the hugely acclaimed and hugely disappointing WALL·E, but this movie is wonderful. Saw it in 2D and am glad I did. A hugely endearing, affecting, often hilarious film -- both a heartbreaking meditation on loss and death and a heartwarming look at family and friendship that's at its worst during the climactic action sequences, good as they are. Not a perfect film but often damned close. (*****)

The Hangover -- Todd Phillips, 2009 -- This film is not a future classic. It probably won't be long remembered. But for what it is -- a crude comedy -- this is about as good as it gets. Hilarious pretty much through and through with characters who are actually characters. And it's funny while being its own thing, and not simply aping an Apatow comedy or a Farrelly bros comedy or any other particular branded raunchy comedy style. I enjoyed myself immensely and laughed a lot and for that it gets a high rating. (****½)

Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino. Over all not bad, but I found some parts such as the scene in the barber shop to be unintenionally funny.

I'm pretty sure the barber shop scene was intentionally funny. But there are definitely a lot of unintentionally funny moments in the movie.

Hell Drivers (1957).

It's about an ex-con (Stanley Baker) who joins a highly competitive firm of truckers. It's an okay film, but the cast is the geek mother-load; I mean, where else would you get William (Doctor Who) Hartnell, Patrick (The Prisoner) McGoohan, Sean (James Bond) Connery, Herbert (The Pink Panther) Lom, David (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) McCallum, Gordon (The Professionals) Jackson, and Sid (Carry On...) James in one film? Throw in Jill Ireland and Alfie Bass and that's one hell of a cast.

How did you get access to Clint Eastwood's intentions?

Backwoods

Haylie Duff baby!! Movie sucked, I was hoping to see her nude, or at least show some more skin. Movie was pretty awful but I've seen worse.
