Terrific movie, should have been praised as the coming of age story that Juno was in 07.

The Crucible, it seems I can't go through a Lit course with out discussing Arthur Miller's play or seeing this adaptation of it. No bother though Daniel Day Lewis is absolutely fantastic in this film

Some first-time viewings over the past week or so as I filter through my DVD collections and get around to watching some titles I picked up over the past few years but never got around to opening (some at regular price, some bargain bin):

-Citizen Kane: An interesting flick with surprisingly little of the stylized acting you usually find in older films. It might run a little too long but there are some great scenes here- made all the more bizzare by Orson Welles' similarity in kieness to an evil Mirror Universe version of Bob Hope. Obviously I knew what Rosebud was so that mystery wasn't present, thoguh i find myself more compelled to watch the documentary on the struggles Welles went through to make this thing and use such radical, for the times, camerawork and such.

-Casablanca: This one took a little bit more for me to really get into. As interesting as Bogart is, the film itself doesn't really get that interesting till the last 30 minutes or so. Though some scenes, like the rival national anthems chorus, were great. I was also surprised, given how often and much dialogue from this film has been quoted over the years, that I found a line I hadn't heard before that I really liked: "And remember, this gun is pointed right at your heart.", "That is my *least* vulnerable spot."

-xXx: State of the Union: I rather enjoyed the first film, but had very little interest in seeing this one beyond just seeing how they ruined the series. It loses the anti-Bond feel and energy that made the first film so appealing, and ends up with a pretty straight-forward government conspiracy C-movie thats even sillier than the first film in every respect (outrunning an avalanche on snowboard is nothing compared to a hot rod running off the road, onto train tracks until the tires shred down to the rims that just happen to fit on the tracks and manage enough traction for it to catch up to a speeding bullet train! rolling_eyes ).

Ironically, while the story took the Bond out of the franchise, the music put it in heavier than the first film. Marco Beltrami's score is some really fun spy action music that I imemdiately had to track down (there's no official release, I believe- but a promo version is floating around) and whose discovery made enduring the film worth it. There's also a track called "Victory" by a band called Bond which appears in the film and blends in perfectly with the score.

-The Aviator: I usually don't have high expectations for Scorsese films beyond technical merits and performances. I'm in the minority with that opinion, but I generally don't find his stuff all that entertaining, usually ill-paced and too unfocused or abstract (arty?). But occasionally he puts out something that exceeds that analysis and I end up loving them, such as The Departed. The Aviator joins it's company. Lots of great moments, great performances, and though perhaps the ending is a bit abrupt or falling into the "too arty" realm, it's still a great film that doesn't lose the viewer despite the runtime. Oddly enough, 50% of what I knew about Hughes beforehand, the extreme germophobe, was actually the only place the film seems side-tracked a little. The other 50%, the Spruce Goose, I apparently knew incorrectly (I thought it never flew, unless that was a fantasy sequence somehow- I was expecting it to be revealed as uch but never was, so I'll asusme I was incorrect on that factoid). The senate hearings equence was a particular highlight, as was the Hepburn portrayal.

Transformers 2. I personally didn't think it was as good as the first one. There were some cool action scenes and stuff, but I think they went a little overboard with some of it.

Hitman: Unrated. Aside from one brief and poorly lit frontal nude scene, I didn't think there was really anything "unrated" about it. Having said that, however, its a fun little asassin movie that kind of feels like a cross between The Bourne Identity and a video game. It came and went from theatres at the end of 07 without making much of a splash, but its a solid, slick-looking action flick. If you like your movies full of guns, girls and mayhem, you'll probably like Hitman.

I agree that Hitman wasn't bad (though I can't say how accurate it was to the game). They've apparently greenlit a sequel.

Yeah. I read that last night. Apparently there are rumors of casting Bruce Willis as the bad guy.

I rented Passengers and Two Lovers and watched them last night. I actually think Passengers is a pretty good movie, in spite of some bad reviews. As for Two Lovers, either I wasn't in the right mood for it, or it's not as good as many people would have you believe - and I'm a pretty big Gwyneth Paltrow fan.

They both have kind of surprise endings, which I thought was an interesting coincidence.
