A damn shame. Did not see this one coming. I loved Pollack as an actor. In Husbands and Wives, he was absolutely terrific. He was probably my favorite thing in Michael Clayton, as well.

It's a shame that the first thing I thought of when I read this news was that he shuffled off this mortal coil with The Interpreter being his last feature film as a director. Would've been interesting had he directed HBO's Recount, too.

What's rather crazy is that he and Anthony Minghella were partners in Mirage Enterprises, and both of them are now dead in the last three months.

Think I'm gonna go throw on Tootsie now, and tip my glass to one of the greats. RIP, Sydney.

The thread title currently reads "Stanley Pollack", but the man's name was Sydney Pollack. Just FYI.

Well, in fairness, it's easy to see how there might be some subconscious, Freudian confusion.

After all SYDNEY Pollack DID star in STANLEY Kubrick's final movie, EYES WIDE SHUT.

So to mix the two: Stanley + Sydney + Pollack = potential confusion.

We should at least get his name right, out of respect.

Yes, indeed. Sorry about that; the eye sometimes skips over things.

Can I describe my love for Sydney Pollack's Out of Africa? As a teenager in the 80s, like most of us here I used to channel-surf, catching a few minutes from the middle of one movie, the end of another, the beginning of something else. I did this with Africa for years, becoming familiar with bits and pieces of the film, and really enjoying them, but never watching the entire thing. Finally, in the early 90s, I took the video home and watched it twice -- falling in deep, lasting love with it. That it is based on the autobiographical works of the main character enhances its natural beauty and profound insight into human behavior. A few years ago, when my now-wife and I broke up, my best hope, which I expressed to her at the time, was that our relationship was something akin to the one depicted in this film between Meryl Streep and Robert Redford: that we would know each other for years, come in and out of each other's lives, and always be in love no matter where we were or who we were with. And so it has come to pass that we are together again, perhaps in a happier way than it happened to Karin and the Redford character. But the point of all this is that Out of Africa is so very close to my heart, and I thank Pollack, may he rest in peace, for his poignant and beautiful labor of love.

Harvey Korman, aged 81

Mostly remembered today in unsubtle Mel Brooks comedies. If you can find clips of his TV work, you can see how very brilliant he could be, especially paired with Tim Conway.

Very funny man. His performance in Blazing Saddles was one of the best in a Brooks film

Korman as Prince Phillip, with Carol Burnett as Elizabeth II and Professor McGonigal as a streetwalker

The most enjoyable part of watching Harvey Korman, for me anyway, was when he'd work with Tim Conway and would break character laughing so hard at Tim's antics. My favorite 'regular' character of his on The Carol Burnett Show would have to be Max from the 'Sunset Boulevard' spoofs, and for individual sketches, as a dueling pianist with Tim Conway. The best part of that skit, however, is actually a goof-up made by the sound crew, who started playing the recording of the piano piece Harvey was pretending to 'play' before he even placed his hands on the keys. He leaves his hands up in the air and has the funniest look on his face as he stares up at them incredulously.

I wish Korman had had better chances in movies.

An Appraisal of Sydney Pollack

I think this is fair. Part of my problem with Pollack is Robert Redford, whom I thoroughly dislike; I'm not that fond of Dustin Hoffman, either. Liked Pollack as an actor--he's very good in "Tootsie" (Hoffman is not), and directors who aim at a wide audience are unfortunately rare.
