Dear Grim Reaper, 2008:

Stop. Taking. The. Good. Ones.

Meanwhile, Dane Cook and Carlos Mencia still walk the Earth.

Can't Bill and Ted undo this, and save Rufus? I almost made like Vader, Johnny Utah, and Danny Butterman when I heard about Carlin. Guy better get the Russert State Funeralâ„¢ treatment. His last HBO special was one of his best. At 71, the man was still giving everyone hell, and didn't give a **** if you got offended. I'll always remember him as the guy who was able to make rape funny.

Last time I saw him live, I remember being pleasantly disgusted at his necrophiliac routine. Now with added irony! The highlight of the show was early on, when he was telling some beyond-disgusting jokes. For instance: "How did the hillbilly girl know that her mom was on her period? Her brother's **** tasted funny."

It was a simple, crass joke that everyone caught onto pretty quick; but what was amazing is that Carlin did the impossible: he explained why the joke was funny. Most times, if you have to explain your jokes, it's automatic fail, but Carlin's always-articulate dissection took the ceiling of vulgarity to a whole new level.

I need brunch and Kleenex.

George Carlin was one of the greats. I don't think anyone could generate as many laughs as he did with angry observational humor, Lewis Black and Carlos Mencia may try but they will fall flat on their face each time. He was without a doubt a legend in the field of stand-up comedy. This is probably the worst celebrity death this year

I get teary-eyed clicking through that list. I was with George for so many of those milestones, and yet I feel like he was taken too soon. Please, just another five years of that acerbic, cynical wit! cry

Another great character actor heads off into the sunset. He was a great actor; I loved him on Twin Peaks, and his cameo in Con Air was hilarious.

Ah, jeez, I just last week watched again One Breath, my personal favorite episode of the X-Files. On it, he appears, though his character is already dead, to deliver the following, which now seems far, far too fitting.

Hello, Starbuck. It's Ahab. People would say to me, life is short - kids, they grow up fast, before you know it, it's over. I never listened. To me life went at a proper pace, there were rewards until the moment that I knew, I understood, I would never see you again. My little girl. Then my life felt as if it had been the length of one breath, one heartbeat. I never knew how much I loved my daughter until could never tell her. At that moment I would have traded every medal, every commendation, every promotion for one more second with you. We'll be together again, Starbuck. But not now. Soon.

That's a speech that a lot of actors would have butchered with overt acting; not Davis, he underplays it, so close to the chest that it hurts the thousandth time you see it.

I carried part of it in my sig for a while:

Then my life felt as if it had been the length of one breath, one heartbeat.
