Don't be ashamed -- I haven't either, actually (though this one I have). But it's fun to do research and learn about them happy

I wouldn't consider her a feminist, really. She's a bit like Agamemnon's wife, really -- just mad and in a murderous rage. And yeah, kinda scary. I don't like this play, actually; I feel so bad for the kids.

Somebody wrote a parody of the killing of the children along the lines of "Oh, she striketh me! Oh, she striketh me again!" which isn't so funny as the translation I have: Ah me! What am I to do? Where can I escape my mother's murderous hands?/I know not, my dear, dear brother. She is killing us.

Euclid's Elements

A geometical treatise written in about 300 BCE, Elements is considered the mathematical collection. Used by geometry teachers to torture students everywhere, the 13 books have been important for the development of logic and has also contributed to science.

Torture is the word. My least favorite subject.

I was lucky enough to get a really fabulous geometry teacher, but for the most part, I really hate math.

Commentarii de Bello Gallico

In English, it's Commentaries on the Gallic War. It was written by Julius Ceasar (in third person) about his nine-year campaign against the Gauls (the Celts and other peoples of France, Belguim, and Switzerland). The campaign, in addition to conquering a vast amount of territory for Rome, also served to boost the opinion of Ceasar in the minds of the Romans (and also to pay off his debts).

The book is often assigned to Latin students as their first real text, so, like Euclid's book, is not remembered fondly.

Though I studied Latin, they made us translate Cicero instead. Which made me hate him.

The City of God by Augustine of Hippo

This treatise was written in the 5th century CE. Augustine wrote it to explain Christanity's relationship with other religions. He believed that Christains should concentrate on the spiritual instead of the political scene in Europe. In essence, he argued for what later people would call the seperation of church and state.

he's probably written a number of books... is this the one where he argues hell exists so all the virtuous people can feel better about themselves?

Plato's Republic

This is probably Plato's most famous work. Divided into ten books, this is an influential work of philosophy written in Socratic dialogue. The story is narrated by Socrates, who instructed Plato. The discussions that take place in the story revolve around the defination of justice, the form of government, and the theory of universals.

I just missed it, but I'll discuss it anyway: City of God thoroughly disgusts me for its purely political and biased polemic. The thinking that led to its composition is a big factor in why the Roman Empire fell.
