some of these are very sad stories, people randomly subjected to the gods' egos and desires... but also, see phaeton, our own hubris and pride. marvellous poetry.
ted hughes actually did a translation of part of it???

The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer
wiki posted: The Canterbury Tales is a collection of stories written by Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century (two of them in prose, the rest in verse). The tales, some of which are originals and others not, are contained inside a frame tale and told by a collection of pilgrims on a pilgrimage from Southwark to Canterbury to visit the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral.[1] The Canterbury Tales are written in Middle English. Although the tales are considered to be his magnum opus, some believe the structure of the tales is indebted to the works of The Decameron, which Chaucer is said to have read on an earlier visit to Italy.

Frankly reading Middle English is like reading French. I've never liked "The Canterbury Tales" for that reason.

I don't have as much time or interest as I'd like to continue this If anyone is interested in adopting this thread, I'd be grateful.

We read excerpts from The Canterbury Tales in my Brit Lit I class this semester. I think it really depends on the translation you can find. Anyhow, I loved the story of Allison and Absalom, pure slapstick comedy.

This is an extremely good thread, but it needs someone with wide reading in Ancient Classics...

As an English major, I'd love to take you up on it, but sadly I haven't done that much with the ancient classics yet to the extent that this thread is due.
