That might be the greatest movie title ever.

This very interesting article is from "The Projection Room: (Posted by Mike McGranaghan May 01, 2007 20:32PM)

"In the 50's and 60's, producers and directors used to come up with a great movie title first, then try to build a story around it. They knew that there was something irresistibly luring about a catchy title; a good one could get the crowd in the door, and once you had their ticket money, it didn't really matter if the film delivered or not. How could anyone not want to see Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies or The Beast with a Million Eyes? Those titles promised something unique and unexpected. As time moved on, the masters of cinema also embraced the effect of a memorable title. Hitchcock brought us the terrifying simplicity of Psycho. Francis Ford Coppola had the urgency of Apocalypse Now (it's not apocalypse later, it's apocalypse now!). Steven Spielberg had Close Encounters of the Third Kind, knowing full well that the first and second kinds are lame and it's the third kind that really counts.

Having said all that, I sometimes wonder if modern movie titles have lost their artistry. There doesn't seem to be a lot of pizzazz these days. Assume for a moment that you know nothing about the plots themselves. Based on title alone, would you rush out to see a film called The Holiday? Or Bobby? Or The Return? How about these: Crank, Accepted, Zoom, The Lake House, Hoot, Pulse or The Sentinal?"

Or "Michael Clayton"?

I'd like to get my hands around the throat of the human being who concocted the title, THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY. Yes, that's guaranteed to sell tickets. not_talking

I'm aware of the subject matter and the book it's based on. It's STILL a terrible title!

To continue the article: "Once in a while, one pops up that is nothing short of brilliant. My favorite title of 2006 was Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. Hard to fit on a marquee, yes, but it was funny and it filled you in on the joke right from the get-go. Another great recent one was The 40 Year-Old Virgin. The title alone promises big laughs. The films themselves weren't so hot, but How to Eat Fried Worms and Beerfest sounded like a kickin' double feature. Then there's Snakes on a Plane which has become one of the most celebrated movie titles of recent times."

"Borat" is a great title.

Its got that classic B movie style name...absurdly long and strange, but certainly evokes those old late night horrorfest that make better laughs than chills. It sounds like something you would find on MST3K.

If I'm not mistaken, MST3K did in fact take on TISCWSLABMUZ. If they didn't, I have no idea why I knew the title.

"Borat" and "Snakes on a Plane" in particular are fantastic titles. SoaP was probably too well-titled for its own good.

"Attack of the Amazingly Bad Movie Titles From Beyond the Grave"

Posted by Mike McGranaghan May 01, 2007 20:32PM

"To see how the titles of 2007 are holding up, I took a look at the films playing at area theaters. I saw very little that was right, and a whole lot that was wrong. In the bad cases -and that's most of 'em - I humbly offer up a more appealing option.

Next - Could there be a more bland title for the new Nicolas Cage action flick about a Vegas magician who uses his future prognostication abilities to foil a terrorist plot? Aside from sharing its moniker with a cheesy MTV dating show, the title is as dull as the premise is outrageous. Plus, the word "next" connotes moving on or skipping something. Is this really the message the filmmakers want to send to a moviegoer perusing the choices at his or her local box office? A better title: "Magician vs. Terrorist: The Battle Begins!"

My vote: "Future Violence"

Next candidate:

"Perfect Stranger" - "This is an erotic thriller starring Oscar winner Halle Berry as a woman who seduces her boss (Bruce Willis) to determine whether he's committed a murder. So why does the title suggest a big-screen version of the old Bronson Pinchot sitcom (minus the plural)? I'm not kidding when I say that people have asked me who plays Balki in the film. A better title: "Office Affair: Behind the Copy Machine""

My vote: "Sex on a Desk"

Next: "Are We Done Yet?" - "This sequel to the inexplicably popular Ice Cube comedy Are We There Yet? is like an invitation for critics and sarcastic audience members to scream out the title mid-movie. I don't want to see a film called Are We Done Yet? because it makes me expect to be bored and impatient. A better title: "Why Can't This Movie Go On Forever?"

My vote for the title: "Child Torture Made Easy" (that'll draw a crowd)

I wonder what the 1989 N.W.A Ice Cube would think of the 2008 Ice Cube?

If they really want to keep the "Are We... Yet" to let people know it's a sequel, perhaps go with "Are We Having Fun Yet?" It's still an easy target for critic subversion ("No we are not!"), but at least it doesn't do all the work for them.
