121.
Johnny Belinda
(1948) - Max Steiner
This is Steiner's seventh appearance on the list.
This score was nominated for an Oscar, along with Newman's Snake Pit, Walton's Hamlet, and Friedhofer's Joan of Arc. They all lost to Brian Easdale's Red Shoes.
I heard an excerpt from this on a compilation of Steiner music a couple of years ago. I don't remember anything about it.

RE: AFI's 100 Best Scores: Disc. 121. Johnny Belinda (1948) - Max Steiner
102. Hatari! (1962) - Mancini
It has good "wilderness" music but the best part about the score is the iconic baby elephant walk. Though some say it had no place being in the film as it was just a chance for Mancini to once again enter the popular music scene. Oh well. It deserves the nomination and might crack the top 100.
103. Hawaii (1966) - Elmer Bernstein
I could take or leave this score. Not one of his best.
105. The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (1968) - Dave Grusin
I can't remember this one at the moment.
105. The Heiress (1949) - Aaron Copland
My second favorite Copland score. Very nicely done but not top 100 material.
106. High Noon (1952) - Dimitri Tiomkin
I've starting to really venture into Tiomkin now. He's the last bit of undiscovered Composer country for me, but I can certainly say that this is his best. The ballad is great but the movie...
107. Hoffa (1992) - David Newman
It's alright. You start to wonder why this made it but certain others didn't though.
108. The Hours (2002) - Philip Glass
Though I own it and think it's beautiful, I think its overrated. Go figure.
109. How Green Was My Valley (1941) - Alfred Newman
Saw the movie a long time ago but remember the music was just a lot of choir/jigs.
110. How the West was Won (1962) - Alfred Newman
I consider this to be Newman's best work. Ken Darby sure helped alot but that main theme gets me humming it all the time. The movie sucks beyond belief though. But this score, despite it being overpriced, deserves the top 25 IMHO.
111. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939) - Alfred Newman
I'm not sure I remember this one.
112. In Cold Blood (1967) - Quincy Jones
Robert Blake before he went nuts... but anyways the score is unique and maybe worth the nod, but not top 100.
113. In the Heat of the Night (1967) - Quincy Jones
Only the main song is notable. Sung by Ray Charles. Good tune, but not incorporated well into the film.
114. The Informer (1935) - Max Steiner
Overrated, overrated, overrated.
115. The Inn of the Sixth Happiness (1958) - Malcolm Arnold
This played over the summer and its a good film. But the music is forgettable. Why was this nominated?
116. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) - Ernest Gold
Great score. Gold's second best. In fact its one of the most playful scores ever. Not top 100, but the nomination was worth it.
117. Ivanhoe (1952) - Miklos Rozsa
The movie is alright and the music works within it, but outside the movie it's largely forgettable.
118. Jane Eyre (1944) - Bernard Hermann
I can take or leave this one. Not one of Herrmann's top 10 in my opinion.
119. Jaws (1975) - John Williams
Of course it was worth the nomination at the top 25 spot. True cinema classic with such a basic and simple, yet iconic theme. Sometimes the score gets a bit repetitive, but not as bad as others.
120. Jezebel (1938) - Max Steiner
121. Johnny Belinda (1948) - Max Steiner
Pretty good score. The theme with the xylophone and the violins is best. Probably recognizable if you heard.

RE: AFI's 100 Best Scores: Disc. 121. Johnny Belinda (1948) - Max Steiner
I think this list was interested in putting a lot of the "big names" on the list. Thus things like Malcolm Arnold's Inn of the Sixth Happiness, when even his best score, Bridge on the River Kwai isn't
that
great, while a lot of other scores got left off.
122.
King Kong
(1933) - Max Steiner
This is Steiner's eighth appearance on this list. This score was nominated for no awards.
I used to say Steiner ushered in the era of the film score with Gone With the Wind. Then I heard this; now I say Steiner ushered in the era of the film score with King Kong.
This is a raucous score; subtle it ain't, but it's absolutely balls to the walls, all the way, full on hard orchestral music at its best. The music never and I mean never shuts up; it's practically a character; this can be annoying if the music isn't up to snuff. Luckily, here it is.
Definitely top 100; not Steiner's best or worthy of top twenty-five, but top 100.

I still actually haven't seen the film, but I own and love the complete score. A fantastic work, from start to finish. Kong's theme is brilliantly bombastic, and the quieter moments are just as good as the loud ones, which can be difficult in a film like this. Still, as Rogue notes, this is probably the first great film score, and well worth getting hold of.

For its time, it was the best score ever written. It certainly did usher in the age of film music. This is why Steiner is the second greatest composer ever and why King Kong deserves the spot it got in the top 25.

King of Kings
(1961) - Miklos Rozsa
This is Rozsa's sixth appearance on this list; this score was nominated for no awards.
Haven't heard this one or seen the film.

124.
Kings Row
(1942) - Erich Wolfgang Korngold
This is Korngold's fifth appearance on this list. This score was nominated for no awards.
I haven't seen this film, but I love the score; it's amazing. Korngold was more famous for his rousing adventure scores, but this rather quiet, rather melancholy mood piece is probably his best score. The Main Title is amazing. Definitely worthy of the top 100.

I haven't seen it, either, but TCM should show it eventually.

125.
L.A. Confidential
(1997) - Jerry Goldsmith
This is Jerry Goldsmith's third appearance on this list.
Nominated for a Golden Globe, along with Nyman's Gattaca, Williams' Seven Years in Tibet and Glass' Kundun, but lost to Horner's Titanic. Nominated for an Oscar, along with Kundun, Williams' Amistad and Elfman's Good Will Hunting, but per usual, Titanic took that one too.
I coincidentally just finished this novel, which by the way is five star all the way (go read it! now! Ellroy is Chandler's true heir!). I have seen the film, but I just can't remember anything about the music; I keep hearing Chinatown when I try to think of it.

123. King of Kings (1961) - Miklos Rozsa
One of his best works. Very Churchy with bells and choirs. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for classic film scores. I don't think it will disapoint. Top 100 is very possible.
124. Kings Row (1942) - Erich Wolfgang Korngold
One of my favorite scores. The movie wasn't what I expected it to be at all when I eventually saw it, which made it all the more interesting. Certainly a top 100 and possibly a top 50.
125. L.A. Confidential (1997) - Jerry Goldsmith
I agree that this pretty much reminds me of Chinatown. It's alright, but there are far better Goldsmith scores that could have made this list. I actually ended up with two copies of this score once.
