"You know, i think i have to credit Stephen King's "Dark Tower III: The Wastelands" with having the best cliffhanger i've ever read..

You have Roland and his merryband trapped onboard the runaway BLAINE THE MONO, being informed that IF they are unable to come up with a Riddle that stumps Blaine (who's pretty much a supercomputer), then they are going to wind up rocketing to their collective doom.

I was going NUTS for Dark Tower IV to come out so i could find out how things got resolved.."

Completely agree with you. Best closing dialouge ever - "LET THE CONTEST BEGIN" or whatever. I'm just lucky I had Wizard and Glass at the ready.

Id have to admit, DT3 did have a great cliffhanger ending. King had me dying for the next book, even more so as the years went on since it took so long for DT4 to come out.

A Storm of Swords also has a great ending, maybe not specifically a cliffhanger but it still leaves you salivating for AFFC.

I think Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince had a great cliffhanger.

I heard that the new harry potter book is a bit of a let down. No plot and badly written is what im hearing. I havent got it yet but mean to pick it up as soon as possible. Your thoughts?

Whoever told you that is WRONG. I thought it was terrific. A much tighter story than the last 2 books.

I don't think it was so much a cliffhanger, but just a brilliant setup for the final book in the series. It just put Harry on a path where he knows what he needs to do, and why he needs to do it.

Best cliffhanger I've ever read in a book? "The Two Towers." Sam chasing after Frodo after finding out he's alive--people would have gone insane if the movie ended like that.

It was shorter then The Goblet of Fire which was a little of a let down. But it was really good.

A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin has a pretty good one.

You know, all of you folks saying "two Towers" have a great point. I guess, with the movie being the most recent rendition of the story i'd seen, i had actually forgotten how events played out in the book. Heck, i think the cliffhanger that ended book 1 (Aragorn storybranch) was pretty nifty, as well. Pippen and the Palantir, with the Enemy finally grasping a hint as to what's going on.

The fifth HP Book was also a cliff-hanger.

I'm going to put in yet another vote for the end of TTT the book. Absolutely perfect. He doesn't go for the obvious cliffhanger-- keeping us thinking that Frodo is still dead. But being in Sam's head for this part, knowing he bungled it up and let Frodo get captured is such exquisite torture to Sam, especially after he'd almost worked himself up to complete the quest himself. And how is Sam of all people supposed to rescue Frodo without getting nabbed himself? Even if he uses the ring he's vulnerable to the Nazgul. Wait and see! FRODO LIVES! But he's about to be sent to a fate worse than death. Oops. tongue

My favorite cliffhanger is the end of Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn. Let me put it this way: It is as if in Star Wars, Luke Skywalker had died in the middle of the battle of Endor and Leia had been expected to take down Vader and the Emperor instead. I have to read the rest of the trilogy.

Not, however, the seventh.

Several chapters in the seventh book ended with a cliffhanger, but I don't think that counts. tongue
